We have a beautiful restock of plants ready for this weekend. There is lots of choice available.
Most fish’s natural habitat contains live plants. So keeping some live plants in the aquarium help stimulate their natural habitat

Join us on Sunday 9th February for a relaxed tea and coffee morning (with biscuits, of course!) from 10am – 11:30am-ish.

It’s a great chance to catch up with fellow fishkeepers, make new friends, and chat about your aquariums and ponds. All our staff will be in, so if you’ve got any fishy questions, we’re happy to help!

Important: While the doors will be open from 10am, due to Sunday trading laws, we can’t serve or sell anything until 10:30am – but that won’t stop us from having a cuppa and a chat!

Different species of aquarium fish require different pH levels. Fluctuations outside these preferred values can cause stress to the fish. If the water becomes too acid or alkaline the fish soon die. It is important to regularly test the pH, as pH can occasionally rise in new ponds, and older aquaria tend to acidify over time. Also regularly check the pH in a heavily planted aquarium, ideally in the morning and evening and especially when using a CO2 dosing system as the natural daily process of plants can affect the pH of your aquarium water by day and night.

In low concentrations, nitrate is far less harmful than the nitrite it is broken down from, though high levels can still be dangerous, especially to newly added fish. Nitrates can build up in ponds and aquaria where there is insufficient filter bacteria to deal with the total waste from all the fish and lead to algae growth

The AquaCare Nitrate test, exclusively available at Maidenhead Aquatics, is another essential test for freshwater fishkeepers. With 30 tests included, it should be conducted weekly or when fish health is a concern. The test is user-friendly and designed for first-time fishkeepers. Simply take a 5ml water sample, add nitrate-1 and nitrate-2 solutions, wait 10 minutes, and match the colour to the chart for nitrate levels. Contact your local store for assistance if nitrate levels are unusually high.

Regular water changes and increasing plant life can help maintain low nitrate levels and prevent algae growth.

If you're thinking of giving an aquarium or fish as a gift this Christmas, we’d like to remind everyone that we don’t support last-minute purchases of tanks and livestock as surprise presents on Christmas Day.

We’re not here to spoil the celebrations or upset the children, but as with any other time of year, it’s crucial to set up a tank properly and allow sufficient time before adding fish. Additionally, we recommend not overloading a new tank with too many fish too quickly.

Smaller tanks can make excellent gifts, but it’s best to let the recipient set up their tank on Christmas Day (or whenever they’re ready) and then visit us after the holidays to choose their livestock. If you’re unsure about anything, please give us a call so we can help you prepare and avoid the disappointment of leaving empty-handed.

The welfare of our livestock is always our top priority, throughout the year.
