Hello everyone,

We hope you're all keeping well despite the winter weather.

We've recently received a number of calls and messages about our parrots, so we wanted to share some important information and clarify our breeding practices.

While we do breed a variety of parrots, we do not breed them during the winter months, and here are some key reasons why:

Temperature and Lighting:
Winter brings shorter days and colder nights, which can pose risks to many parrot species, particularly chicks. Some breeders attempt to replicate ideal conditions through artificial lighting and heating; however, we believe this can disrupt the natural cycle of our birds and lead to stress and exhaustion.

Ethical Breeding Practices:
Over-breeding is not only unnatural but also unethical. We firmly believe that every living being deserves time to rest and enjoy life without being overworked.

Health and Well-being:
Waiting for warmer, brighter months ensures that both parent parrots and their chicks are happy, healthy, and strong.

We understand the high demand for parrots, but our waiting list ensures that those who genuinely wish to welcome a parrot into their lives will have that opportunity. Patience is essential when caring for these intelligent and sensitive birds, as they require dedication and understanding.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Jon & the Newport Pets Team

🌿 The Importance of Whole Foods🐦

Did you know that a balanced diet of whole foods is essential for your bird’s health and happiness? At Newport Pets, we care deeply about the well-being of your feathered companions, and that starts with proper nutrition.

Here’s why whole foods are a must for your bird:

🍎 Vitamins & Minerals: Fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, and leafy greens are packed with nutrients to support their immune system and overall vitality.

🌾 Whole Grains: Quinoa, brown rice, and oats provide long-lasting energy and essential carbohydrates.

🥜 Healthy Fats: Seeds and nuts in moderation are excellent sources of omega fatty acids for shiny feathers and healthy skin.

🍃 Proteins: Legumes like lentils and chickpeas help with muscle development and growth.

❌ Avoid over-reliance on seed-only diets, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Variety is key to keeping your bird healthy, happy, and full of life!

Have questions about your bird’s diet? Drop us a message or visit our shop – we're always here to help!

🐟 We have some new fish in the shop and we thought it would be good to start posting more information which could be useful for you and your fish. 🐟

🚫 MYTH: "Fish only grow as big as their tank allows."

✅ TRUTH: This couldn’t be more wrong! A fish’s growth is driven by its genetics and care—not the tank size. Cramping them in a small space can actually stunt their growth, damage their organs, and shorten their lifespan. 😟

Take goldfish, for example: These beauties can grow up to 12 inches long if you provide the space they need. Imagine keeping a dog in a tiny kennel—it’s the same idea for fish!

At Newport Pets, we believe healthy fish are happy fish. That’s why we’re here to guide you on proper tank sizes, water quality, and nutrition.

💬Let’s hear it from you! What’s the wildest fishkeeping myth you’ve ever heard? Share it below, and we might feature it in our next post!👇

Hey Everyone, we hope that you have had a great start to 2025!
As we move deeper into the year, it's the perfect time to highlight an often-overlooked but vital aspect of bird health: calcium. Whether you're caring for budgies, parrots, any type of bird, understanding their nutritional needs is key to ensuring their happiness and longevity. For female birds, especially during breeding season, calcium plays an even more critical role.

Calcium is essential for:

Strong Bones: Birds rely on calcium to maintain strong skeletal structures. Without enough calcium, they can develop brittle bones and fractures.

Egg-Laying Health: Female birds require significant amounts of calcium to produce healthy eggs. Without it, they’re at risk of egg-binding—a potentially fatal condition.

Nervous System Function: Calcium supports healthy nerve function and muscle control, keeping your birds active and coordinated.

Beak and Feather Health: Calcium deficiency can lead to overgrown, brittle beaks and poor-quality feathers.

Signs of Calcium Deficiency:

Weak or deformed eggshells
Lethargy
Limping or difficulty perching
Fragile feathers
Changes in appetite or mood

If you notice any of these signs, consult an avian vet immediately and assess their diet.

Ways to Provide Calcium:

Here are some recommendations to support your bird’s calcium intake:

Cuttlebone or Mineral Blocks: These are natural sources of calcium that birds can nibble on whenever they need.

Calcium-Rich Foods: Add leafy greens (e.g., kale, spinach) and broccoli to their diet. For parrots, almonds can also be a good treat in moderation.

Eggshells: Crushed, sterilized eggshells can be a great calcium source. Clean and bake them to remove bacteria before offering.

Calcium Supplements: For birds with higher calcium demands, consider avian-specific calcium powders that can be sprinkled onto their food.

UVB Lighting: Calcium absorption is linked to vitamin D3, which birds can produce with access to natural sunlight or UVB lighting. Ensure your bird has adequate exposure, especially if they live indoors.

A Final Note:

Offering a calcium-rich diet is one of the simplest yet most impactful ways to support your bird’s health. Whether you’re a seasoned bird owner or new to keeping feathered friends, we’re here to help with expert advice and a range of high-quality products.

If you have any questions about calcium or avian nutrition, don’t hesitate to reach out or visit us in-store. Your birds deserve the best!
