The French Bulldog is a truly misunderstood breed.

Their history is complex and very interesting, but still isn’t common knowledge amongst dog lovers. Understanding this breed is key to their training, fulfilment and success - we see so many Frenchies that we wanted to share some of that with you!

A lovely review/post from Bonnie’s owner! ❤️

Bonnie came to us for help with loose lead walking, as walks had become really stressful for her owner, with Bonnie getting very overexcited and pulling lots on the lead.

We changed her lead to use a Gencon Headcollar and got to work conditioning her to be happy wearing it!

Now she’s walking so much better and her walks are fulfilling rather than frustrating! 🐾

🎄It’s that time of year again…

The time when shops start to sell brightly coloured rawhide in fun, Christmassy shapes, even though it’s not a safe treat to give your dog!

Why?

Because it is treated with harsh chemicals such as bleach and glue, it is high in salt and preservative and it is not easily digested, meaning it is likely to cause blockages that can be serious!

So here’s your reminder to choose a more natural, healthy treat for your dog this Christmas! Our dogs love rabbit ears, duck/goose feet, pigs ears and a whole selection of long lasting, natural chews! 🐾

This is something lots of owners aren’t aware of - but it’s very important!

Coat flicks - what do they mean?

Sometimes, on your dogs, their coat will change direction and ‘flick’ a different way. This is usually an indication that your dog has a trigger point, myofascial restriction or a ‘knot’ in that particular muscle.

Usually seen in the shoulders, back or pelvic area, coat flicks are a great sign that your dog may be due a massage treatment.

The science:

Hair follicles work very closely with the fascia that sits just underneath the skin, therefore if the fascia is being pulled, is sore or dysfunctional, then the overlying hair will be affected. Fascia is vital to normal movement as it allows glide and ease of movement through out the body.

When muscles, fascia and joints become stiff or sore, your dog will adapt how it moves. This may mean that one side of the back might be kept rigid, or doesn’t bend as much as the other side. This then creates further dysfunction of the underlying structures, therefore creating more coat flicks. This cycle continues until the soreness is treated.

Massage!

Clinical canine massage is an effective technique to release fascia restrictions, hence reducing pain and discomfort, therefore reducing hair flicks in the coat!

These are all common problems that dog trainers and behaviourists hear all the time. In reality, we’re asking dogs to adhere to the rules of a modern human world that many breeds are not suitable for!

Humans have spent thousands of years breeding dogs to do specific jobs, selecting them to have the strongest of their breed traits.

Then, in recent years, humans have bought puppies and tried to shut down their genetics - unsuccessfully!

When choosing a dog, you should know the full history of their breed - why were they bred? What breeds made them up? What job did they do? Which lines are bred to work?

All of this information should be worked with, not against to ensure safety and fulfilment of dogs and their human families.

When did we start ignoring our dogs needs and trying to fit them all in the same box? Or trying to put them in situations which aren’t right…
