Potential for snow tomorrow....possibly....either way it's going to be bleddy FREEZING!
If your dog has a coat, I suggest they wear it so please leave it out for me if not home when I collect.
If the white stuff does arrive, obviously it may impact on the day for driving and safety etc, but will keep everyone up to date IF it happens.
I really hope it does as its my birthday and would love a snow day!
Wednesday's forecast for Cornwall and weather information.
โ ๏ธMET OFFICE YELLOW WARNING FOR SNOWโ ๏ธ
Valid from 09:00hrs until 23:59hrs.
So here we go, the forecasting nightmare continues. As you are all aware, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow for Wednesday. A low weather system expected to creep into the Southwest, will collide with the bitterly cold upper air temperatures. This brings the risk of any precipitation falling as snow. Within the warning area, 2-5cm of snow is possible, however this doesn't nesssarly mean it won't snow outside the warning area as there is still a risk. All it takes is one tenth of a degree to determine rain or snow and where the freezing level is, which at present is low enough for snow to fall anywhere across Cornwall. There is a chance that overnight, this system changes its mind and shifts further south. As it stands the probability of snow falling somewhere in Cornwall is very likely, but until we start watching the system move in, we won't know if or where.
Now, it could steadily come in as rain, sleet, and hail, then all of a sudden turn to snow later in the day, we have seen that happen before. It certainly won't take much for conditions to change from one to another.
Let's take a look at tonight. Any showers should eventually die out, the odd one or two may find their way in. Areas of cloud will come and go, with the majority of Cornwall overcast by the small hours. It'll be another very cold night with temperatures dropping to possibly -2ยฐC but highs of around 5ยฐC, however there will still be a very cold feel like temperature of around -4ยฐC to 2ยฐC. The winds become a variable easterly direction with speeds 5-15mph, so nowhere near as blustery as last night.
Wednesday's sock rating: 0
Wednesday morning starts off bitterly cold with temperatures between -2ยฐC and 5ยฐC, and mostly cloudy. As the low system moves in some kind of precipitation will start to fall, as it bumps into the cold Arctic air. Like I've already said, this may start as rain, sleet or hail, and stay that way, or turn to snow, especially as it moves inland. An excat time of when this moves in may well vary. What we do know is that the winds will become a variable easterly direction and starts with speeds of 10-25mph. The winds are expected to increase throughout the course of the day. This will then allow temperatures to drop off with some locations barely making 3ยฐC, along with a feel like temperature between -7ยฐC and -1ยฐC, so it'll feel quite raw wherever you are.
Depending on this systems track precipitation will move slightly northwards, unless it decides to stay further south. We really can't say what it intends to do at present. Either way by the afternoon most of us should be seeing a mixture of rain, sleet, hail, or snow. We won't honestly know until tomorrow morning. Example it could be raining in Penzance but snowing in Newquay, hailing in Redruth but sleet in Camborne, that's how hard this one is. The winds increase during the afternoon onwards, we could see speeds of between 15-40+mph.
If it does snow, the heavier snow is likely to be around higher ground, Bodmin, Bolventor, mid Cornwall onwards, the normal spots. So if you are travelling tomorrow please be aware that conditions could change like a flick of a switch, one minute your driving in sleety rain, the next snow. This will mean road conditions and surfaces will become unpredictable, with any heavy snow more than likely causing the usual problems. Our best bet at present is to bring you updates throughout the day, when we all know where we stand. I hope you understand that it's so difficult to forecast snow in Cornwall. Apologies but we CAN NOT tell you if it will snow in your location.
Depending on if the system tracks northwards by the evening and if snow has fallen, conditions and road surfaces will be poor with the risk of any snow likely to freeze. This will then allow temperatures to plummet during the evening and overnight. I will have a better update of tomorrow evening nearer the time.
Thursday.
โ ๏ธKWT WEATHER WATCH FOR POTENTIAL OF SNOWโ ๏ธ
Thursday continues cold, along with sunny spells and a brisk northwesterly wind, these will have speeds up to 30mph. During the late evening and overnight another system threatens to move in from the Southwest. Yet again due to cold temperatures there is another risk of wintry precipitation. Once again we won't be 100% sure what will fall from the sky but some weather charts are hinting at more snow. So for now we will get Wednesday out of the way, but please keep an eye on our page for updates.
Kind regards
Penny,
