Happy National Zoo Keeper Week!

We would like to recognise the amazing aquatic specialists of Oceanarium, Bournemouth!

We have 8 aquatic staff members plus our dedicated volunteers who care for our 215 species of animals, ensuring they receive second to none care in a clean and healthy environment.

We have lifelong memories here with some staff being here as long as 20 + years! We are eternally grateful for their dedication to the wellbeing of our animals, passion for conservation and service to the Oceanarium.

A new study in Applied Animal Behaviour Science looked into the effects of enclosure size on the behaviour and welfare of captive corn snakes. They found that snakes were more active and able to stretch out in a large enclosure (bigger than snake's length) than in a small one (2/3 snake length). Also, preference tests showed snakes preferred large enclosure while active! Housing snakes in enclosures bigger than their length may therefore have a positive impact on their behaviour and welfare.

This presentation demonstrates how science-based animal training has a significant welfare benefit on all kinds of animals in Zoos and aquaria, in many different ways. From arapaima to zebra, and everything in between, we will show how training is not just for the flagship mammals, but for every type of animal in the zoo. Using examples from across the taxonomic groups, we will explore the diverse ways in which Zoo animal caregivers are replacing traditional methods of husbandry and medical care, such as manual restraint, with a co-operative and progressive approach, and provide evidence into how this change is having a positive impact on Zoo animal welfare, whatever the animal.
