Today we are celebrating our two firefox gals Seren and Sundara❤️🔥
Did you know that red pandas are the OG pandas? That's right! Red pandas were discovered roughly 50 years before the giant panda!🐼
They are also not in the same taxonomic family as the giants, giant pandas are classed as bears, whereas the red pandas alive today represent the only species that remains in their taxonomic family, Ailuridae!
Not only are they are the only species of their kind, sadly, there may be as few as 2,500 of them remaining in the wild. This means they are classed as Endangered, with their numbers continuing to decline. The main reasons for this decline is habitat loss due to deforestation, and poaching and hunting for their fur😓

Green araçari toucans🦜🌈
These tiny colourful toucans are certainly a sight to behold! Our green araçari couple have recently had 3 chicks, which you can now see out and about in their exhibit at the top of the zoo🐣
Get to know this species better:
🌎 Green araçaris come from the lowland forests of north-eastern South America, including Brazil, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela
🥝 They have more of a hooked bill than other toucans. This, along with the sharp, serrated edges of their bill, helps them to grip and gather fruit
🦜 They are on average between 12-16 inches tall which makes them one of the smallest species of toucan

Today is International Primate Day, and we're celebrating our favourite furry friends!🐒
Primates are a group of mammals that consists of monkeys, lemurs, lorises, apes and humans. With its 300 or more species, it is the third most diverse order of mammals, after rodents and bats, and they're all amazing in their own way!
We have lots of different primates to see on site from golden lion tamarins to squirrel monkeys, black and white ruffed lemurs to silvery marmosets🙉

Funky new hairdo (?) 🤔
… Not quite! After breeding season, Humboldt penguins get ready for a serious makeover, moulting their feathers and welcoming in a brand new set. Before their moulting starts, they load up on lots of food, as once the feathers start to go they temporarily lose their waterproofing and have to avoid the waves! 🌊🐧
During this "no-swim zone," which usually lasts about two weeks, they rock a scruffy look while growing a brand-new set of feathers. Each penguin’s moult is a little different, making this time extra special! 🥰

Did you know that pelicans swim in a line like this when they are hunting? They work together, swimming in synchronisation, and with each flap of their wings the sound they create drives the unsuspecting fish toward shallow waters! Once in the shallows, they can duck their heads under the water with their bills expanded and trap the fish🐟🐠💦
