Pet Connection

Pet Connection Pet Connection is a family owned business established in 2002. Our aim is to provide for the needs of all pet owners in our area. Looking forward to seeing you

Our store is the largest independent pet store in the area and we believe we have the most comprehensive selection of pet products in Newry & Mourne. Our customers' interests always come first and we sell products based on our customers' needs, not on price or profit percentage. Pet care is a huge field and we continuously train staff and ourselves about as many aspects of pet care as we possibly

can. We listen to our customers and pass on recommendations about different products that work for different conditions. If a customer requests a product that we do not currently stock, we do our best to get it in for them. We deal with both Irish and English suppliers as well as suppliers from as far afield as Germany. Our store is one that we hope customers feel comfortable coming into. You are welcome to come and browse, take the kids to play with the animals or hold a snake, and please do not feel any pressure to buy anything - indeed, several of our customers have commented in the past that it's a bit like taking the kids to the zoo only better, because you don't have to pay an entrance fee. We have a large fish selection as well as all the other sections you would expect to find in a pet shop. We cater for dog, cat, small animal, reptile, fish, cage bird, wild bird, poultry and pigeon. Please feel free to call in and have a look.

🚨 Power Cuts & Fish Tanks 🚨

For anyone out there who hasn't had their power switched back on yet, we have a few tips to keep your fish as happy and safe as possible:

🐠 Most aquarium inhabitants can happily survive slightly lower temperatures for a limited time, so temperature is not the biggest concern.

🐠 Most critical is the water quality, as without filtration and water movement, this is the factor which is likely to cause problems.

🐠 Turn off the filter as, without oxygenated water flowing through the biological media, harmful toxins can build up that are discharged into the aquarium when the power is restored. If the power is out for an hour or more, remove some filter media and store it in a bucket with a little water from the aquarium to keep it moist as the bacteria will survive better out of water with exposure to atmospheric air.

🐠 As the temperature falls, cover the aquarium with a duvet, blanket or towels to slow heat loss.

🐠 Stirring the water in your tank regularly can increase oxygen levels available to fish.

🐠 However tempted you may be, never feed the fish if the filtration isn't working.

🐠 Once power to the tank resumes, we recommend adding a filter bacteria starter to aid recovery and keeping feeding to a minimum until both ammonia and nitrite levels are seen to be under control through regular testing.

🐠 Be prepared to carry out a series of water changes in the days after a power loss.

Thankfully the wind has eased up a little!

Our Dublin Road store will be opening at 3pm today.

Please remember that, although the red weather warning has passed, we are still in an amber weather warning (amber being the worst most of us have previously experienced). Keep safe when out and about.

Continue to keep your cats indoors and check your fences/gates before letting dogs outside.

For the safety of our staff, our Dublin Road store will be closed tomorrow morning.

Once it is safe, we will open. We will post here on Facebook once we know what time that will be at.

Stay safe in the storm everyone and please don't drive unless absolutely necessary.

We're thinking of the many nurses, doctors and other essential workers within the extended Pet Connection family, hoping that they get to and from work tomorrow safely, and by the rest of us staying indoors and safe we can reduce the risk to those who must travel and the workload faced by the emergency services in such bad conditions.

And PLEASE, check your fences tonight to prevent dogs escaping. Keep cats indoors from now, changes in weather conditions and pressures can disorientate them and stop them from finding their way home.

This is off the scale from what we're used to in Ireland, please don't take any risks unless they are truly necessary.

It's all go today in our warehouse as we try to get today's orders out in time for Christmas, but we made sure to snap a photo of one very special box which will be making its way to the dogs at MADRA!

All thanks to your wonderful donations via our Christmas Gift Box scheme.

We have some really exciting news coming in the New Year for all the charities we work with, and we'll be able to open up our Charity Wishlist Scheme to some new rescue centres also. Keep your eyes peeled!

Finally, a huge thanks to MADRA and their wonderful supporters for sticking with us and helping us through the issues we've encountered while trying to improve the wishlist process this year ❀️

Tease recommends that, if you must get out of bed this morning, PLEASE check your fences before letting your dog out to the toilet. Storm Darragh is wreaking havoc out there and a damaged fence plus a scary big gust of wind can put even the most reliable dog into flight mode.

Keep cats indoors until the weather clears up too, heavy wind can easily disorientate them and cause them to get lost.

If you're braving a dog event today and heading to Cloghran Championship Show, Lisburn Obedience Show or somewhere further afield, drive safely and have a lovely day!

We had a lovely visit from Rocky at the weekend!

Rocky is a very special little boy - from humble roots (he was rescued as a tiny puppy) he has blossomed with his family and in April he won a medal at the World Agility Championships representing Ireland!

He wandered around the shop to pick his favourites and he just couldn't resist a lie down in this gorgeous wooden bed with its comfy mattress inside.

These beds are handmade with care by a local man, so are only available in our Dublin Road store. They are available in 2 sizes and can be painted to your colour preference if you wish. We love them as much as Rocky does!
