Why do we groom guinea pigs?
Over heating - It's important to get your piggies groomed when the weather warms up because it helps to prevent heat-related issues such as overheating and heat exhaustion. Grooming helps to remove excess dead fur and matting, allowing better airflow to their skin, which helps them regulate their own body temperature more effectively.
Skin irritations - Additionally, grooming can prevent skin infections and irritations that can be exacerbated by heat and humidity.
Fly Strike - Fly strike is also more common in the summer months when fly populations are high. It can occur in animals when their fur is damp or soiled. Your piggies living environment must be kept clean and dry and they should be regularly groomed and checked for maggots or skin irritation, especially long haired breeds.
Grease Gland Cleaning - All Guinea pigs have a grease gland located just above their bums where you might expect to see a tail. The caudal gland produces a thick gluey secretion used for scent marking. Boys often produce more than females. This substance often gets stuck around the glad and can easily become blocked or irritated. In some cases, especially in long haired piggies the hair and secretions can mix with bedding and become tightly matted.
Health Checking - Grooming gives us a great opportunity to check your piggies all over for any abnormalities, such as lumps, over grown claws, and food issues are commonly seen. This enables you to get prompt veterinary advice and treatment.
Nail Trimming - it is important to keep your piggies nails at an appropriate legnth. If the nails are left to grow to long, they can penetrate the pads or damage the structure of the foot, leading to pain in later life. Trimming keeps them short and healthy.
While having a groom with us we will give your piggie a bubble bath and soak in a natural shampoo, gently dry them, trim their nails, clean their ears

#notmyproudestgroom! #humanitybeforevanity
Sometimes you will get a dog that doesnβt like grooming. Itβs important that we put the comfort and welfare of the dog before aesthetics. This is Poppy, she has come such a long way over the years from needing a muzzle to now pulling her owner to get in to the salon. She still doesnβt love it but she LOVES the treats and excitement she gets when she gets things right. We wonβt be winning any competitions with her grooming but she was pivotal for me in developing my game Ready, Steady, Yes! ππ»π I would LOVE to see your grooms on dogs that are a bit more difficult. Letβs normalise βnot the perfect groomβ. To me that is even more of an achievement! #notmyproudestgroom
