It's time to dig out your dog's winter coat, brush up on your knowledge of antifreeze poisoning in cats and to think about how to keep your rabbits warm.. yep, it's winter!

Dogs - All dogs will appreciate a warm winter coat or jumper. For some, especially smaller or shorthaired breeds, older dogs or younger puppies, a winter coat is a necessity. Just as we wouldn't go out in a t-shirt, your dog doesn't want to go out only wearing fur either!

Cats - If your cat is outside for most of the day, make sure they have a warm, dry and draft-free place to shelter or consider a cat flap so they can come and go as they please. Also, check underneath your car before you head off in the morning as this is a popular place for cats to hide from the cold!

Antifreeze Poisoning in Cats - Cats and dogs love the taste of antifreeze but it is HIGHLY dangerous to them. If you use de-icer to defrost your car window, be sure not to spill any. Store antifreeze somewhere that is off limits to pets and dispose of it safely and responsibly. If you have any suspicion that your pet has had access to antifreeze, contact your vet immediately.

Check your rabbits' hutch is nice and warm - Rabbits and Guinea Pigs are highly susceptible to cold weather as they lose heat very quickly. Make sure their hutch is well insulated with plenty of dry bedding. Insulate their water bottles with bubble wrap to ensure they don't free overnight. Bring them indoors during very cold periods.

Protect dog's paws - be mindful of grit on the road and don't allow them to walk through too much of it. Rinse and dry their paws thoroughly when you return home from your walk.

Watch out for ice - Try Keeping your dog on a lead near patches of ice, especially ponds or lakes which can be particularly dangerous at this time of year. Take care when it snows too, you never know what could be buried beneath, be it grit or a slippery surface!

Cold cars are just as dangerous as hot cars - we mention this a lot during the summer months, but the same rule applies during the winter when it's cold. It is not suitable to leave a dog alone in the car - no matter if there is a window open and no matter what time of year it is!

Stay vigilant - Try to walk your dog during daylight hours if possible, but if you have to walk when it's dark, we recommend using reflective gear. Avoid letting them off the lead if you are unsure of your dogs recall and make sure their microchip details are up to date!

Keep your pets active - If your pet is spending less time outside, ensure they have mental stimulation (a good excuse to buy them some more toys!).
If they're doing a lot less exercise, reducing their calorie intake will help prevent them gaining weight.

If you're concerned about your pet in any way during the colder weather, have a chat with your vet.

If you have a cat or kitten, then at some point, you'll have to decide whether to have them neutered. Neutering is the surgical process of preventing your pet being able to reproduce. If you don't want your cat to have kittens or don't plan on breeding from them, then neutering is recommended.

Neutering cats can have several benefits, including preventing unwanted pregnancies, reducing undesirable behaviors, and preventing some medical conditions

For male cats, neutering can reduce urine spraying and marking behaviors, prevent testicular and prostate cancer, reduce aggression and fighting, decrease the likelihood of wandering, and prevent infectious diseases

Before neutering, the vet will check the cat's health and ask you to restrict food overnight.

The surgery involves general anesthesia and the removal of the reproductive organs

The ideal age for neutering is four months old, and it is recommended for outdoor cats before they are allowed to roam

For more information on cat neutering, visit https://www.myfamilyvets.co.uk/cat-neutering-advice

It's getting cold out and you've decided to crank up the central heating. But little do you know, you've just unleashed a potential flea invasion in your cosy home. ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Heat from your heating system provides the ideal environment for those sneaky flea eggs to hatch. And that's not all! Vibrations caused by passing pets or even people can act as a wake-up call for these pesky critters. Talk about a perfect storm for flea infestations!

We've got some tips to help you outsmart these cunning parasites. โŒ๐Ÿ”’

1๏ธโƒฃ Regularly vacuum your carpets, furniture, and pet bedding to remove any potential flea hideouts.
2๏ธโƒฃ Keep your furry pals protected with vet-recommended flea preventatives (included in Pet Health Club)
3๏ธโƒฃ If you suspect a flea invasion, consult professionals for effective treatment options. Don't let them take over your cozy abode! ๐Ÿ’ช

Remember, prevention is key to keeping these unwanted guests at bay. Join Pet Health Club to get year-round protection from pesky parasites.
