Check out Nellie’s loose lead walking!

How much does she love her dad?!

Once we start to understand our dogs better then it is easier to support them to learn the things we want them to.

Walking nicely on the lead is really important, not only for safety reasons but to make walks more pleasurable for us humans (our feelings and thoughts are important too)

Nellie has just completed my Awesome Adolescents Course where one of the main aims is to help you understand your dogs better.

By understanding how Nellie is feeling when she on the lead we can tailor a plan to teach her to walk nicely. Every dog is different and the reasons why they struggle on the lead are different too.

Dogs pulling on the lead isn’t always to do with excitement. Over arousal happens for many different reasons.

Say hello to Rocky!

🧡 He has just joined his forever home 🧡

We had a session together to ensure everything was on the right track and we were setting him up for success. He is a gorgeous boy and is going to make a great companion.

Look out for him in my group social walks 😃

I first met little Luna about two months ago.

Our first session was very hard for her. She is worried by dogs and people. By the end of the session we had made friends and her people went away with homework.

Along the way we have changed a few other things too, she’s now on a better diet and has a lovely bright yellow long lead and a little vest saying

Her humans are working really hard behind the scenes with her separation anxiety and things are definitely improving.

I met Luna last week for our third session. She was so much happier. Life is still stressful at times but Mum and Dad have been working so hard making positive changes.

Unfortunately when changing a dog’s behaviour there is no quick fix. This family are in it for the long run, they know that things will be hard and slow but looking at the long term goal and focusing on little wins keeps everyone motivated and on track.

Luna’s family have been using The Dog Geeks online behaviour and training support platform to improve their understanding of their dog and find new ways of improving their lives together.

Tomorrow Luna is off to see TES Veterinary Physiotherapist to see if an underlying pain issue maybe causing some of her difficulties.

Working as part of team means we are better able to support our dogs. Having a team of behaviourists, trainers, physios etc gives us knowledge and understanding from every angle.

Interesting…. Never underestimate the effect pain and discomfort can have on your dog

🐾 What is nociplastic pain? 🐾

Nociplastic pain is a relatively new term used to describe the third category of pain.

It is a type of chronic pain that’s caused by changes in the function of pain-related sensory pathways in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
It’s different from nociceptive pain, which is caused by tissue damage, and neuropathic pain, which is caused by nerve damage.

Nociplastic pain is a non-specific, regional pain lasting more than three months and can be associated with hypersensitivity to sound and/or light, allodynia (painful response to non-painful stimuli, like stroking), fatigue, sleep disturbance and cognitive problems.

Nociplastic pain can be found in many chronic conditions such as lumbosacral disease and IBS. Some researchers think it may also be linked to myofascial pain and persistent myofascial trigger points.

Managing these patients requires an holistic approach involving pain medication trials, complementary therapies such as physio and massage, correct nutrition, lifestyle changes and environment changes.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from nociplastic pain, please first speak to your vet who may be able to help you or refer your pet to a pain specialist.

Canine Massage is great for dogs, it can be used to release tension, calm dogs and increase blood flow for those dogs that are trying to repair.

It’s important to know the signs and signals that our dogs are giving off to establish if our dogs really are enjoying it. That’s my role in these workshops, looking and the behaviours our dogs are displaying to see if they are comfortable with what we are doing.

Touch should be about consent, if your dog isn’t comfortable with the massage then it won’t be of any benefit. You dog needs to be relaxed and willing.

During the session TES Veterinary Physiotherapist Tanya will be teaching you some basic techniques that are safe for you to use on your dogs at home.

No need to bring your dogs, we’ve got that covered!

🔶 Change your narrative, it makes a difference 🔶

Ruth - “that was the worst walk ever, what a disaster”

Pete - “what happened?”

Ruth - “grumble grumble, moan, huff, rant”

Pete - “nothing then?”

We need to think about how we are talking about ourselves and our dogs.

The walk was hard, I found it hard, my dogs found it hard. It didn’t live up to their expectations and they didn’t live up to mine.

There were no reactions or outbursts, no running off, no negative encounters, no one got hurt, I didn’t get pulled over, nothing bad actually happened.

One dog was over aroused and couldn’t cope with being on the lead when in his head he should be off. The other dog didn’t want his walk cut short because the first dog couldn’t cope. Ruth just wanted it all over and done with.

What actually happened was some lead pulling and lurching because Otto couldn’t understand why were weren’t following the normal routine.

It wasn’t the worst walk ever, it wasn’t a disaster and yes I will go and do that walk again.

It was however hard for all of us. But life is hard at times and it’s ok to feel that 🧡🖤

Please don’t walk your dogs it’s a risk that just isn’t worth taking.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about what you should do if your dog is over heating.
