Is your dog struggling around other dogs?

If they are then we need to change things up a bit. If every walk they go on they are having negative encounters or reacting to dogs then this pattern will never change if we don’t.

First start by not putting your dog in situations you know they can’t cope with. If you can’t guarantee it’s going to go well then don’t do it. Your dog is already having a hard time with things, let’s take the pressure off!

Secondly let’s start adding calm, stress free walks into your dogs week. Let’s slow things down and chill out.

After your dog has had a bit of a de stress and now is having calmer walks let’s add in some specific sessions to work on making them feel more comfortable around what is worrying them.

You need lots of space and high value rewards to help your dog make good choices. Keep your sessions super short!

If it’s not working then make more space.

🧡 That all sounds very simple, it’s really not! To help support your dog that is struggling you need a lot of time, understanding and patience. There is no quick fix. Repeatedly putting them in situations they can’t cope with will only make things worse. If it’s not working reach out and ask for help, there is no shame in struggling 🧡

Puppy Life Skills

Week Two

Week Two is always calmer than week one. It’s quite daunting for us humans to walk into a new classroom with people we don’t know, no knowing what to expect or how your puppy will cope.

By Week Two we know the ropes, the puppies come in, settle on their blankets, have a chew or licki mat then we can settle into learning.

Week Two is full of valuable engagement games. I always say if we can’t get our dogs to focus on us when they are on the lead what will happen when they are off the lead?!

A Timothy appreciation post!

A huge congratulations to Timothy in completing his League One Novice Match title and his Mantrailing Mini Leagues Urban Level One.

I’m so proud of all that this sensitive little bundle has achieved. His scent by work abilities are amazing for someone that finds life a bit overwhelming.

A huge well done to his Mum and Dad too for all the support they give him and trying so hard to help him feel more relaxed in this scary world.

Timothy has also now worked up to joining my Group Social Walks and has completed 3 in a row. This all started small and slowly by just coming to the various locations and seeing the other dogs arrive then he would go home. As the weeks past we stayed longer and longer until he’s now able to join in with his Mum, Dad and brother for support.

This just shows that you can make positive changes in your dogs behaviour, it just takes a long time and has to be done at their pace.

To Timothy’s family - thank you for trusting me and doing everything I suggest. His is a credit to you as you are to him. You guys are awesome!

Which dogs like scent work?

All of them!!

In all the years I’ve been running scent work classes I’ve only had two dogs that didn’t really enjoy it, they just didn’t see the point!

Those that did love it?…..

Collies, Labradors, Spaniels, Frenchies, Lurchers, German Shepherds, Cross Breeds, Rescue Dogs, Sausage Dogs, Grey Hounds, 4 month of puppies, Pugs, Retrievers, Pointers, Cockerpoos, Cavapoos, Chihuahuas, Boxers, Poodles, Bichons, Jack Russels, Griffons, Dalmatians, Setters, Viszlas, Huntaways, Weimaraners, Terriers, Westies, Staffies, Corgi, Whippet, Flat Coats, Kelpies, Malinios, Bulldog and more!

If you’ve join my classes and I’ve missed you off the list let me know below!

Here I am, supposedly doing my admin but I scroll through social media.

I see a post of a well known trainer/behaviourist trying to justify why it is ok to use a shock collar on a dog when training it to take part in a sport!

I scroll on and the next post is of a polar bear having blood taken. The polar isn’t being pinned down or forced to give blood. It has been trained to put its paw in a box and wait patiently for the blood to be taken. Then at the end the polar bear is rewarded.

How can we be moving forward with our training, teaching animals to work with us keep them healthy and happy but also still be stuck in the mentality that it’s ok to cause fear/pain when training for a sport?

Ruth goes back to admin. Sorry for the mini rant.

🍁🍂Puppy Life Skills out and about classes! 🍂🍁

As part of my Puppy Life Skills classes you receive two classes out in the real world putting into practice the skills we learnt in the classroom.

This is a great opportunity to ask questions, practice recall and work on the things we want our dogs to do in the future.

We practiced some recall games, getting our dogs to focus on us around exciting distractions, a few lead walking games and a super exercise for helping you puppy calm down when it all gets a bit to exciting!

Each dog has a story which I will share soon.

A huge well done to the humans that have really taken on board what I’ve been teaching, line handling, foot work and really learning to read your dog are all essential and they are smashing it! 🙌🏻

Who is the cleverest dog?

Prudence!

Look at that for an amazing find! I knew that Beagle nose would be able to sniff out her missing person.

Poor Ozzy has had some really unsettling encounters with other dogs recently.

His family joined my Sensitive Scent Work class to do something fun with him, learn some new skills and boost his self esteem.

Look at him go!

The great thing about scent work is that you can continue to practice your skills at home, out on a walk, anywhere really!

Still applies…. We are all always learning.

❓ what do you get for your money❓

Apart from your session with me you are also contributing towards my education.

Just over a week ago I met a dog that was struggling with certain aspects of it’s daily life. After our session I felt I needed to know more to be able to help this dog. So in the last week I’ve read two books on the subject and watched one hour long webinar. I now know lots more and feel I can definitely help make a difference to this dogs life.

My education is hugely important to me and if I need to know more about a certain subject I will always go away and research and study.

A session with your dog is never just an hour for me.

Meet Tilly!

Tilly has joined my Sensitive Scent Work classes. The great thing about these classes is that the dogs work individually so we can work on any of the skills.

Tilly is already ace at so we have decided to work on detecting and indicating on the hidden piece of .

Using the linear kit helps Tilly to become more methodical and therefore sets her up for success.

If you have a sensitive dog and would like to join the class just drop me a message and tell me more about your dog.

Week One Beginners Scent Work

On week one we introduced our first odour. The dogs will be sniffing out pieces of Kong!

We start by building a really positive association with the Kong, that is mostly Kong equals food!

We begin to work on our ‘indication’, this is where the dogs show us where the Kong is. This is often different depending on the dog but we are aiming for stillness.

This is where it gets tricky for the human! We need to let the dog know they are doing the right thing at exactly the right time, if our timing is out we can really confuse the dogs!

As you can see Scent Work is great fun, it really helps build confidence as well as strengthening your relationship with your dog. Look at the focus and connection between the dog and human 💞

December classes are filling up fast so if you’d like a slot then you need to be here 👇🏻

🌟 Working with the dog in front of you 🌟

This applies to professionals and care givers alike. You are one of a kind as is the dog in front of you.

I work best by having someone show me what to do, I can then try it out and ask lots of questions.

For some people the best way to learn is by reading or watching.

To learn anything we need to feel safe, secure and heard. Trying to teach something to a dog that is petrified or so over aroused they can’t focus is pointless. You won’t achieve anything.

Firstly you need to get your know the dog, get them to trust you, find out what motivates them and learn what they can cope with.

Trying to work with a hunting dog in a park full of squirrels isn’t going to happen. We took Blue out of the park and allowed him time to calm down and begin to process his environment. Over time he was able to engage and focus on us. We practiced what to do when he feels worried or overwhelmed and came up with a plan for moving forward.

Every dog needs their own plan!

Well done to these Awesome Adolescents for completing my Life Skills course

Having a teenage dog can be hard work but with lots of understanding, patience and consistency it will get easier.

Often going back to basics and reproofing the behaviours they learnt as puppies can set them back on the right track.

Remember….

Make things easier
Create more space
Make your rewards better

Well done to these awesome pups and their families for completing the ‘inside’ part of my Puppy Life Skills course.

They have all worked so hard and well done to the humans for completing their homework every week. In my courses I include information on nutrition and health and well being. These are life skills classes not obedience classes, giving you skills and information that will last a life time.

See you all soon for the next sessions in your course where we go out and about into the real world and practice the skills we’ve learnt.
