Spring has sprung, don't be caught out, now is the time to start and prepare for the issues that arise from the lush growth of grass.

As the days lengthen, we look around our stable yard the grass verges and outside of the fields are starting to become green, spring bulbs are sprouting and the fresh grass shoots are growing. If you are managing a horse or pony with compromised health where sugar can cause problems now is the time to start planning your spring grass management.

Here's 5 tips to help manage conditions

1. Assess horses’ weight honestly, its not too late to put a weight management plan in place to help horses go into spring a healthy weight
2. Plan spring grazing - you could allow other horses to graze the top off first, strip graze or track graze
3. Increase turnout time gradually – to enable the body to regulate the sugars
4. Increase exercise to burn off extra sugars – as the days lengthen exercising after work or school becomes easier
5. Reduce hard feed as grazing increases.

By using a comprehensive balancer can help horses utilise the feed intake more effectively and improve digestion, especially through the spring changes in diet.
Equibalancer Show and glow light, M&S formula and Everyday LoCal are all fully balanced and ideal for horses and ponies on weight management programmes.

I have decided that while this strangles outbreak is about I will not be treating horses. We have a mare in foal at home and I cannot put them at risk or any of my clients horses I will continue to monitor. Lots of spaces for a human deep tissue massage

New Year's Resolutions for Horses

I CAN walk and p**p at the same time. I can, I can, I can.

I will NOT leave when my rider falls off.

I will NOT roll in streams or try to roll when my human is on my back.

I will NOT leap over large nonexistent obstacles when the whim strikes.

I will NOT walk faster on the way home than I did on the way out.

I promise NOT to swish my tail while my human is cleaning my back feet.

I promise also NOT to choose that particular time to answer nature's call.

I will NOT bite my furrier's butt just because it is there.

I will NOT confuse my human's blond hair for really soft hay.

I will NOT wipe green slime down the back of my human's white shirt.

I will NOT blow my nose on

I will promise NEVER to dump the wheelbarrow of manure over while a human is mucking my stall.

I will NOT grab my lead rope in my mouth and attempt to lead myself.

I will NOT have an attitude problem. I won't, I won't, I won't!

I will NOT pull my new shoes off the very next day just to prove that I can.

I am neither a beaver nor a carpenter. I promise I won't eat or remodel the barn or the new fences.

I WILL forgive my human for the very bad haircut, even though I look like a freak.

I accept that not every carrot is for me.

I will NOT shy at familiar objects just for fun.

I will NOT bite the butt of the horse in front of me during the trail ride just to say "Hi".

I WILL put my ears forward and cooperate when it comes to photos.

𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙮 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙨 - 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩'𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙞𝙜 𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙡? 🥶

The UK has been experiencing some seriously chilly weather the last few days!
As you reach for the de-icer you may also be wishing wilfully for a similar instant fix to the ill-effects of frost for your horse.

EMS/Insulin Dysregulated/PPID/Laminitic horses can be sensitive to frost, and grazing frosty grass can be quite risky for these guys. 😖

𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨? 🤷‍♀️

In short, cold nights (under 5°C) cause most grasses to accumulate sugar making grazing unsuitable for many metabolic horses. In the same way that we recommend low sugar diets for these horses, it is best to also avoid high risk grazing situations like frost. 🧊

There is also another issue – the cold can reduce blood flow to the hoof and this in turn can result in “cold-induced” or “winter” laminitis. This laminitis of a different cause to “everyday” laminitis and, somewhat scarily, can present slightly differently with no digital pulse or limited relief from pain medication.💊

𝙎𝙤 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤?🤔

The easiest way to avoid laminitis during frosty temperatures is to seek grass-free turnout options. However, many of us have access to grass turnout only, we are often met with, at best, two choices – the stable or the field. In this case, I suggest you try some/all of the following options:

❌️Prevent or limit access to the grass during sunny frosty weather

🏃‍♀️Instead, embrace movement through in hand and/or ridden exercise where available. Any movement will be beneficial to your horse, I am a big fan of in hand walks a few times a day.

🧦Keep feet warm by using wraps or bandages.

🐴Offer appropriate hay either before turnout or during turnout.

🌱Use a grazing muzzle following consumption of hay if grass turnout is unavoidable and your horse is already accustomed to a grazing muzzle.

As ever, there is no “one size fits all” approach to laminitis management and we are all trying to do the best we can with the tools we’ve got. What is appropriate for one horse may not be so for another, and it is up to you as the caregiver to decide what is appropriate for your horse. 🐴

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧?

🦶 Footsoreness
🔥Heat (in any amount of feet)
🫠 Flexibility/softness in soles of the foot
👁 Swelling above the eyes
↔️ Shifting of weight from one foot to another
😴 Lethargy
🩺 Pulses
🌱 Firmness in the neck

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀, you just need to notice a change.

Remember, not all horses are affected by the frost, but it's good to be mindful of these symptoms just incase. ✅️
