What a wonderful write up about our Heelwork to Music Competition written by Helen Glass.

I really don’t know how to write this post- whatever I write it won’t do justice - but take it as it is meant to be read.

When you see a conveyor belt if helpers on a Friday night working together as if it was rehearsed, when you see hard working and polite scouts working aside well kent faces you know you must be at the K9 pusrsuits show .

When competitors receive a welcoming smile and welcome pack on a Saturday and as a judge you receive a fabulous and bespoke welcome gift bag you suddenly realise you are back at newton ayecliffe.

When there are an array of hardworking k9 pursuits folk working on the stalls and raffle giving of their time willingly ( even when they don’t compete) you know thd host club have a loyal following .

When you couldn’t ask for more when the judges steward makes sure you have everything you need you know you are in safe hands.

When your fellow judge has judged at crufts you know you are sitting at the table with the very best in the uk.

When judges lunches include delicious cake baked by Margaret Hunt you know you are being well looked after.

When the raffle raises over£400 you know that you are in the company of generous people who are keen to help the nominated dog charities.

When they offer special spot prizes for each class , when the places to 6th receive goody bags you know this show appreciates your entry.

When a show has a red carpet for prize giving, when the winners do a lap of honour, when you witness five first places and think to yourself - right time, right place - you know that hard work over many months has paid off for really nice people .

And when you go to shows knowing you can’t compete you are gladdened to sit with golk that are joyous, riotous and like minded. And thank you to all those who met Lily snd said such nice things about her.

Now I know that I don’t get to many shows to compare K9 pursuits with but I can say eith conviction that if you haven’t been , no matter where you live in the uk, you need your experience this hospitality in 2025.

I can’t wait now to go to sbcc in sept and clever canines in October - to do it all again. Will there be professional photographers there ? Asking for Lily .

I start the gymnastics class in two weeks time ……

Well done Gill Crawford snd Andrea Rogers snd their fabulous team

I’ve seen a few Merle Working Cocker Spaniels around recently so I feel the need to educate people about Merle Working Cocker Spaniels.

Merle is a colour seen in some breeds e.g Collies or Dachshunds, and can be characterised by sometimes having blue eyes or odd eyes.

Merle is NOT a recognised Cocker Spaniel colour so Merle Cocker Spaniels have at some point been mixed with one of these breeds.

Any Merle Cocker Spaniels that are KC registered have only been registered because a stud dogs details were stolen and used to create fraudulent paperwork.

If you get a Merle Cocker spaniel you may well end up with behaviour traits of the Collie or the Dachshund !

These dogs have generally just been bred for their colouring so temperament and health has often been over looked !

If you breed two merle dogs together you get double Merle puppies which are often blind and deaf.

We are already seeing the fallout of Merle Cockers and these blind and deaf puppies are now appearing !

Please be cautious and do your research about the Merle colouring, don’t buy a puppy because it’s a pretty colour !!

***Awareness Post***

We've had two requests to search for dogs recently. Sadly they've drowned and at this time of year they have resurfaced before we could get there, leaving their owners with a traumatic task of recovering them.

There are a number of breeds that CANT SWIM or are POOR SWIMMERS. They can sink very quickly and with best efforts to save them it is often not possible.

You rarely get a second chance with water.

Your dog may never have shown an interest in water, or may just paddle. But dogs are instinct reactive and it only takes one accident.

Please don't take the risk. Please keep breeds that are known to be poor swimmers on a lead near water. At least then you have a chance of saving them.

Some of the breeds most known that can't swim/poor swimmers and most at risk are...

• French Bulldogs
• English Bulldogs
• Pocket Bully's
• Pugs
• Dachshunds
• Boxers
• Shih Tzu's
• Basset Hounds
• Corgi's
• Maltese
