Pain Management in Older Pets

There are different ways and many types of drugs that are used to lessen and prevent pain.
Some drugs include:

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)- These drugs interfere with the body’s production of molecules that cause pain thus reducing inflammation and pain.
Opioids- These drugs are mainly used to treat severe pain such as after surgery, cases of cancer and severe arthritic pain.
Neuropathic drugs such as gabapentin are now becoming common to offer additional pain relief.
Newer drugs are also becoming popular in practice such as Librela which is a monoclonal antibody drug that works by interrupting the transmission of pain signals.

Other ways to manage pain include:

Physiotherapy which evaluates function and movement with the aim to optimise the physical potential of the patient (McGowen et al 2007). It works by increasing muscle strength, reduce pain and increase joint health.

Weight management is another way of relieving joints from carrying less weight and can alleviate pain.

Diet and supplements- Using supplements such as glucosamines and omega 3s and a well balanced diet can support joint health and reduce inflammation.

Signs of pain in our pets

It can be quite challenging to notice pain in pets because they are very good at masking signs of discomfort. Having said that, it is vital to recognize any sign of discomfort as early as possible in order to provide them with the care and comfort they require.

Pain in elderly patients can be due to osteoarthritis, dental pain or cancer.

Signs of pain include:

1. Physical changes such as limping, stiffness especially when getting up, difficulty standing up and sitting down.

2. Changes in demeanor such as being withdrawn, clingy or even reluctant to exercise.

3. Aggression, snapping when being stroked or sudden withdrawal when being touched.

4. Difficulty sleeping or settling down.

5. Decreased appetite.
