⭐️ Kennel Cough / Infectious Cough ⭐️

🐾 Does your dog hate the “up the nose vaccine”?
🐾 Do you still want your dog to be protected from this prevalent infectious disease?

🎉 Then we have good news 🎉

We now have 2 dog/vet/client friendly versions of this vaccine 😊

✅ We recommend the oral version is given initially. It is low volume (1ml) , tastless and can easily be squirted without a needle at the back of the mouth.
✅ Our experience to date is that dogs tolerate it really well. It is active within a week.
✅ Once you have had this version, if your dog still resists or is head shy then as long as given within a year, an injectable version under the skin is an option.
✅ All vaccines cost the same.
✅ We still have some intranasal vaccine if your dog is fine with it. The only benefit of the intranasal version is that it covers borditella, which is the bacterial component of infectious cough, in 3 days instead of 1 week with the other two.

If you have any questions please speak to one of our vets!

👺TICKS 👺

We are seeing an increase of ticks coming into the practice again, so we wanted to give some info on what to watch out for;

📌 Ticks attach to your pet (or you!) to feed on blood. Ticks can vary in size, if they are bigger (size of your baby finger nail) then you can assume they are full of blood 😱

📌 Ticks can feed for a few days on a host. It can be difficult to see them when they first attach as they are so small, so it is important to check your pet regularly

📌 Ticks can carry and transmit Lyme disease which is harmful to pets and humans

📌 Remember when removing ticks it is really important that you also remove the head. Leaving this in can lead to infection

⭐️ Be Proactive About Parasite Prevention ⭐️

✅ Keep your flea, tick and worm treatment up to date - phone us if you are unsure if your pet is covered

✅ Carry a tick remover in your pet first aid kit

Do you struggle to remember when your pet is due a parasite treatment? Let us take the worry away with our Pet Health Club 🩷

It was with great sadness that the practice learned of the passing of Bryan Muskett “BM” on Thursday.

Bryan qualified from Edinburgh Vet School in 1970 and worked for Max Boyce in Bangor. He joined Howard Whelan in Newtownards in 1972. Along with Raymond Thompson, they formed Whelan Muskett and Thompson in 1977.

Always the forward thinker, Bryan was instrumental in moving the practice to Jubilee Road in 1987, and the practice became known as Jubilee Veterinary Centre. They built one of the first purpose-built Vet practices in NI.

Bryan worked day and night to build the practice up. Bryan was initially a farm Vet who later developed an interest in small animals, and he became the small animal partner.

Bryan was innovative and always looked to improve the provision of animal care by investing in new technology. Bryan was an extremely talented surgeon and skilled communicator with clients. He was hugely respected by staff and clients alike, and earned enormous loyalty from both.

Bryan retired as a partner in 2011 but continued to work part time until Covid. He worked at Jubilee for 48 years and was in practice for 50 years. Bryan’s impact on JVC cannot be underestimated. Outside of work Bryan’s interests revolved around animals, sport and his family.

Our condolences go out to Sheena, Kerry, Sarah and Grant at this time.

⭐️ Airway Problems in Dogs ⭐️

✅ Do you have a dog that snores alot?

✅ Or gets overheated easily?

You may be interested in reading this 👇

Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome is a condition in mostly toy breed dogs with “Squashed faces” like cavaliers, pugs, frenchies etc, where their short faces result in too much soft tissue in the back of the throat and small noses.

They have overlong soft palates that can predispose them to snore and struggle to breathe. They then try and do more nose breathing, but their nostrils are too small.

This makes them struggle🥺

If left longterm they wont be able to exercise properly, will be prone to heat stroke and over time the excessive pressures they use to breathe past the obstructions cause secondary problems in their larynx, and also can precipitate digestive problems like diaphragmatic hernias and acid reflux.

There is an answer to this 🙌🏻

At Jubilee, we have invested in technology and training and can now trim your pets soft palate to improve the air flow and widen the noses. It is called BOAS surgery.

If you think your pet may have these symptoms and would like one of our vets to examine them to discuss this procedure, or to see if there are any medical alternatives, please come and chat to one of our vets.

Some of our clients think that these breeds of dog are meant to sound and behave like this, and maybe arent aware that anything can be done. There is.

🦷 May is Dental Month 🦷

Why is good dental health so important?

✅ Reduces the risk of the teeth and the supporting structures becoming damaged or infected, which can lead to tooth loss

✅ Prevents bad breath

✅ Prevents oral pain – dental disease, especially when severe, can be painful

✅ Prevents organ damage - plaque can enter the bloodstream and spread to the heart, kidneys and liver. Good oral health will prevent the spread of this bacteria, and subsequent organ damage

Not sure if your cat or dog requires dental treatment? Book in for a free of charge nurse check!

⭐️ All dental work carried out in May will receive a 10% discount ⭐️

If your pet suffers with allergies, you will know just how upsetting it can be for both animal and owner ☹️

Itchy skin and ears, recurrent ear infections, paw licking and warm skin are just some of the more common symptoms of allergies we see in the clinic, and we see a huge increase coming into the spring and summer months.

What if we could accurately pinpoint the cause of the allergies? Now we can! 🙌🏻

A modern and accurate blood test has recently been developed to determine the allergy trigger, and when we know what the cause is we can create a much more specific management plan for your pet.

⭐️ For the month of April, when you book for an allergy blood test you will receive a half price consultation with the vet ⭐️

Let’s ditch the itch for good 💪🏻

⭐️ Exciting Allergy News ⭐️

Spring is well on the way, and with the longer nights and (hopefully) improving weather, we have now started seeing pets coming in with itchiness problems. This usually manifests itself with itchy ears and paw licking, irritated belly’s, warm skin and recurrent skin/ear infections.

Over the counter anti-histamines rarely work for this condition, and we are fortunate to have modern drugs in our armoury to dampen down the symptoms.

However! Recently a company has developed accurate blood testing firstly to see if your dog’s itch is really down to an allergy or not, but if it is, we are now able to grade allergic reactions and vaccines have been developed which over a period of time have been shown to cure some of these cases much more effectively than allergy vaccines from before. These blood tests can identify if your problem is seasonal so that you can avoid some of these medications when the allergies aren’t around.

The clinicians at the practice are excited about these new developments, and are keen to offer this service to you!

⭐️ In the month of April, if you have a pet with an itch and would like to have allergy testing done we will charge you only a half price consultation, so £17.50 instead of £35, plus the cost of the allergy testing and medications ⭐️

If you have any questions on this please feel free to call reception to discuss 02891812226, or send us a message on Petsapp!
