We can categorically state that when it creeps up pain can be difficult to identify or notice. Some dogs still race around with pain, some dogs don't show the trademark stiffness of pain. As your dog ages, or even in their youth - watch for these symptoms.

You may like a bath, but your rabbits do not! 🛁

Rabbits are very clean animals and will groom themselves and their companions, so there’s no need for the suds!

In fact, washing your rabbits (even without shampoo) strips rabbits’ fur of its natural oils, which helps to keep their coat in good condition.

As rabbits do not like to get wet, bathing is extremely stressful for them, causing them to panic and thrash which can be very dangerous and cause serious injury.

Also, rabbit fur doesn’t dry easily, leaving them prone to respiratory infections and hypothermia.

Even in the hot weather, please do NOT put your rabbit in water to cool down.

Only in extreme circumstances should you clean your rabbit, such as if your rabbit is at risk from flystrike, but you should only clean the affected area, not the whole rabbit.

For advice on rabbit bathing, please consult your vet first and visit our website for information: https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-health/medical/bathing-bunnies/

** Product Recall**

There is a voluntary recall happening from today for some brands of cat foods due to a possible link to the development of serious disease in cats eating them.

The affected products are from some ranges of AVA, available in Pets At Home, Applaws and Sainsbury's cat food.

For Applaws products it is only packs with a Best Before Date of Dec 2022 to Best Before Date of June 2023 and a site reference code of GB218E5009.

For AVA it is all batches and best before dates

For Sainsburys’ products it is all batches and best before dates

For a full list of products and the affected batch numbers issued by the Food Standards Agency, click here; https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cCTyXKchcBq5ljmMoRx_lS3UdqaLZIb2/view

To read the statement from Fold Hills Food - the facility where these diets are made, click here; https://www.foldhill.co.uk/fold-hill-foods-ltd-is-recalling-a-number-of-products-it-manufactures-on-behalf-of-partner-brands/?fbclid=IwAR2aL6XX3vO-HmOy3g62IpirulPXj2OOWN3Cwuq1TWbrfx-gKd1JAEEWC68

If your cat has been eating these diets, it may be wise to contact your vet to discuss it with them and possibly run some precautionary blood tests.

However, it is important to note that this is still a precaution and no definite link or cause has been found yet.

You can also join this Facebook group, which has been set up by owners of cats affected by this issue who are sharing all the latest findings and updates; https://www.facebook.com/groups/806871953557080

A lovely visual representation of crucial information.

I made this cartoon in order to explain to some clients why it is important to try and keep their dog below threshold during behavioral therapy and training in a controlled environment (with very gradual exposure) that could potentially cause their dog to become emotionally distressed.

I just published a brand new article about the commonly used word 'threshold'. Read it here:
https://www.lotsdogs.com/behavior/threshold.html

Some quotes from my article:
“It is often claimed that dogs who are over threshold are not capable of learning. This is not accurate. In fact, research has shown that memories of events that triggered emotion, are actually stronger than memories of events that triggered little to no emotion. Emotional events actually ‘dig’ a deep and strong neurological pathway within the dog's brain, because the body considers them to be of high importance (for survival).”

Some forms of training involve the dog being over threshold and a dog who is over threshold can also be in a positive emotional state!

“If you want to change a dog's response within certain context in which it could become emotionally distressed, then you may need to set up an environment in which exposure to that context can be controlled in such a way that the dog remains below threshold and open for learning new, alternative responses/behavior while also building neutral or positive associations.”

New blog post out this month! Words are of particular importance when we use them to ascribe meaning to certain events. In the case of dogs, the words we use to ascribe meaning to their behaviour can give us a clearer picture of their interests and needs, or they can muddy the waters of our understanding of the species we share our lives with. We humans have brought dogs into our lives. Read the full blog here:
