🚫 Retractable Leash….
Everyone has their own opinion but…
I would personally avoid them at all cost!!
They might seem to be handy but there are one of the worst inventions!
✅No control.
When your dog is 15–20 feet ahead, you will have no control over what they might run towards (traffic, another dog, a child, or wild animals).
The extension cord won’t reel quick enough to regain control of your dog.
✅dropped retractable leashes are dangerous ⚠️
Not only will the handle become a weapon if dropped as it will fly all over the ground but will potentially leave your dog traumatised and potentially bolting away with fear
✅Dangerous to handle
The rope burns, cuts, tangled legs, and even amputated fingers.
Those thin cords act like cheese wire when they whip around you or another dog.
✅They teach bad habits.
There is always pressure applied to a dog on their harness or collar and therefore dogs quickly learn that pulling = more leash. That’s the opposite of loose-lead walking where the lead remains lose.
✅They break.
The mechanisms can jam or snap, especially with bigger or strong-pulling dogs.
What I would recommend…. 👍
If you want a safe, enjoyable walk, a 4 to 6 foot standard leash would do perfectly well to keep in control of your dog and enjoy walks.
