☀️ Dogs and Ice Cubes ☀️

The hot weather has brought out the usual myths on social media! So I just wanted to clear this one up for you 🙌

DO NOT walk dogs in this heat - true ✅

DO NOT leave dogs in hot cars - true ✅

DO NOT give your dog ice cubes - false ❌

DO NOT give frozen treats or frozen KONGs - false ❌

There are lots of posts in circulation sharing an unnamed vet's advice that giving ice or frozen treats will cause serious harm or even death. This is simply not true. 🤷‍♀️

When you see anything shared on social media, question the source. An unnamed vet, a post copied and pasted or simply posted from a cropped screen shot is an instantly questionable source.

If your dog is fit and healthy with no signs of heat stroke they are more than safe to:

✅ eat an ice cube

✅ play with ice cubes

✅ have ice in their water bowl

✅ have frozen food/doggy ice cream

✅ have a frozen KONG

✅ enjoy frozen treats inside ice

These can only be dangerous when a dog is already suffering from heatstroke and have been given iced water in an attempt to cool them down. This can cool them down too quickly and potentially send their body in to shock.

If your dog is overheating or suffering from heatstroke, then please get your dog to a vet as soon as possible!

Right now (7am) the air is crisp and perfect for a dog walk and later and it’s starting to get too hot to walk

Please take care with your dogs, heat stroke can slip up on you and them and by then it’s too late.

They’ll still love you if you don’t walk them!

☀️☀️Who doesn’t love the sunshine? ☀️☀️

Errrm.....that would be you if you had a fur coat on!

So what should you do? How should you care for your furry pal in this lovely sunny weather?

Step 1. When to walk them?

- Walk them before 9am, no later! walking them earlier in the day rather than in the evening means the air is crisp, fresh and cool. The pavements aren’t hot like they will be after soaking up all the heat during the day either!
Pads can easily burn and believe me you don’t want to treat a dog with sore pads...they won’t like you!

🐾 NO DOG DIES FROM MISSING A WALK!

Step 2. Plan your day - if your working from home one day why not make some frozen treats the night before? I use an old Tupperware bowl and put some bone broth in along with a few treats and even a few toys! Tip it out on the lawn (in the shade) and they’ll be busy for ages!

🐾 ICE CUBES ARE FINE FOR DOGS (see yesterday’s post) JUST NOT TOO MANY IN ONE GO!

Step 3. How to get a warm dog to sleep 😴 - if you don’t have a cool mat why not try this....
Take an empty 2ltr bottle and fill almost to the top (as it will expand!) with water. Then freeze. Just before bedtime place the bottle on the floor (on a tray as it will drip) just in front of the fan!

🐾 OMG THIS IS THE BEST TIP I EVER SHARE. TRY IT....TRY IT FOR YOU IF YOUR STRUGGLING TO SLEEP IN A HOT ROOM!

🌞 Over the coming warm days I will share some ideas for summer ice lollies and treats you can make at home.

Please enjoy the sunshine, but take care of your animals. This weather is never kind to them!
