Please take care of all pets in this hot weather - here are some handy tips for dogs but also remember cats will need somewhere cool and plenty of access to water and cats with white or non furred ears may need sun cream. Rabbits, birds and small furries are also prone to heat stroke so make sure there is plenty of shade and free access to water at all times.

Thank you for your kind 5* review, it really does mean a lot to our team - we hope you managed an uneventful rest of the holiday! "We’re on holiday with our dogs and of course one needed a vet. The receptionist was very helpful and we got an appointment straight away. The vet saw us on time and was very good informing us about his diagnosis and treatment. He was really thorough with our old girl and prescribed her anti inflammatory medication. We were very happy with the bill which seemed good value for the treatment she received.
So top marks to Toll Barn Vets and hopefully we won’t be seeing them anytime soon. If we need a vet when on holiday here in the future we will definitely call them again!" A Helliwell 06/24

Evening consultations available this week! Our popular evening consultations are available between 7pm and 9.30pm Monday to Friday this week. We recognise that often clients have to take time off work to attend appointments and that some injuries or illnesses only become apparent when owners return from work on an evening so we are offering evening consultations for our clients to help our patients receive the best possible care as soon as possible. If you would like to find out more or book an appointment please give us a call on 01692 407126

Meet Terminator! This handsome chap weighed in at nearly 50kg! He came to visit us this week as his owner noticed he was getting his head stuck behind an abnormal growth of his shell. Luckily for Terminator, our team were able to safely anaesthetise him and remove the abnormal shell growth. He recovered really well and is now back home enjoying his supper!

Thank you for your kind 5* review, it really does mean a lot to our team "We have been taking our cat to Toll Barn since he was a kitten, it's a 35 minute drive from us, but we wouldn't take our fur baby elsewhere, which shows how fabulous they are!
Today I called in a panic and I had an appointment within 45 minutes! We were seen by the beautifully amazing Ellis, she was so kind & Reassuring to myself and my kitty Maverick. Elllis was so polite, professional and empathetic! All of which you need when you're feeling a little stressed!
And then on the way out the Lovely Jill on reception explained some tricks and tips on how to get my fussy boy to take his tablets! I just wanted to say thankyou all so much for putting me at ease and making Maverick better, you are superstars 😊 xx" M Baker 06/24

Meet the Team! Tracy - Registered Veterinary Nurse
Tracy is one of our fantastic Veterinary Nurses who form part of our onsite Night Team ensuring your pets receive the best possible care no matter the time of day or night.
I qualified as a veterinary nurse way back in 1998. After spending my whole nursing career working day shifts i ventured in to night work with Toll Barn in 2023. I am loving the challenges that this brings! I enjoy all aspects of nursing & completed an Animal Behaviour degree in 2005.
At home i have 2 cats, 2 hens & a cockerel plus a young son! I absolutely love living near the coast, spending time in the great outdoors with family & friends.

This beautiful girl came to visit us recently for surgery. She was feeling rather sorry for herself and needing some TLC so our student nurse Abi made her feel more at home by keeping her company! We always strive to make our patients time in hospital as stress free as possible :)

Thank you for your kind 5* review, it means a lot to our team "Fantastic practice, Faye is an incredibly knowledgeable vet and very compassionate with explaining procedures. The reception team and nurses are also amazing, I cannot thank them enough for looking after my guinea pigs after being given false promises and conflicting information from other practices. We are so so grateful and will always take our animals here." Giorgia G 06/24

We are delighted to hear Max is feeling better, he was a superstar patient!

Once again 5 star service
Our 17 week old pup got himself into big trouble with his obsessive habit…… as always, with our boys it would seem, out of hours. Trip one out of hours consult Saturday afternoon, trip two out of hours consult and X-ray/observation Saturday night then on to more X-rays and surgery on Sunday. All in our own practice with staff that we know.
Thanks to amazing surgeon Faye for her skills, care and advice and to all at Toll Barn Veterinary Centre Limited who helped to look after Max during his two day “holiday” at the surgery. I certainly wasn’t expecting to call upon such services this early in our boy’s life.
Hopefully all will be well and muzzle training will beat his puppy obsession.
The only improvement that I’d ask for is….. please can you send Max home from surgery in future with a miracle pill that will keep a spaniel calm for 10 days post surgery, 10 minutes is his limit 😂😂

Meet The Team - Delphi - Registered Veterinary Nurse
'I joined the practice as an Animal Nursing Assistant in 2016. I then began my training as a veterinary nurse & qualified at the end of 2020. I enjoy getting to care for the wide variety of exotic patients we see on a daily basis & have a particular passion for anything rabbit related.'

🌾Grass Seed Alert 🌾
It's the time of year when grass seeds become a problem. We are already seeing many pets with grass seed or barley awns. These can end up in ears, feet and even in the lungs!
Why does this happen?
Grass seeds have sharp ends which help them to stick to clothes and fur. If they are removed at this point then no damage is done, however, some grass seeds will manage to pierce the skin and work their way into feet, down ear canals or into eyes. Pets with grass seeds will usually show signs of pain associated with the location of the grass seed such as rubbing and swelling of the eye, chewing or swelling of the feet, shaking and scratching at the ears. If your pet is showing any of these signs we would advise booking an appointment so we can check the culprit isn’t a grass seed! This grass seed was removed from the nose of a patient using our endoscope.

We are delighted to be able to help care for some rather unusual creatures at Toll Barn Vets. This handsome fellow visited us to make use of our CT scanner. Birds are excellent candidates for CT scans as their air sacs and anatomy mean CT can produce valuable information to guide diagnosis and treatment. If you would like to talk to us about advanced diagnostic tests for your bird please give us a call on 01692 407126. We hope this feathered visitor will be feeling better soon!

What does it mean to be a Rabbit Friendly Practice? Toll Barn Vets is delighted to be one of only a handful of practices accredited by the Rabbit Welfare Awareness Fund as a GOLD standard Rabbit Friendly Practice but what does this mean?
It means we have been independently inspected and assessed for our skills, knowledge and equipment including things like
- our anaesthetic protocols and monitoring equipment specifically tailored to each patient including use of intravenous catheters, types of anaesthetic used and efforts to ensure comfort and speedy recovery,
- the knowledge and qualifications of our vets and nurses (including having a Royal College of Veterinary surgeons Recognised Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine)
- our separate exotic pet hospitalisation and waiting area facilities
- our equipment including our dental equipment, CT scanner, xrays and tiny endoscopes suitable for even the smallest bunnies, in house laboratory, ECG, ultrasound and tonometry (to measure intraocular pressure and diagnose glaucoma)
- building design including our Fresh Gas System which brings in fresh air and removes old air to reduce the smell of other animals
And much more - full details of the award are on the Rabbit Welfare Association website. Our Gold Rabbit Friendly status is a great step forward in caring for rabbits allowing us to continue offering quality care for all pets. If you would like more information please give us a call on 01692 407126.

Flystrike!!!! With the warmer weather we start to see cases of fly strike. This is a terrible disease where rabbits are literally eaten by maggots. It can be prevented by keeping flies away, checking bottoms daily and making sure the environment is clean as well as using products to help repel flies and kill eggs. To find out how to help your rabbit please give us a call on 01692 407126

Rabbit Vaccinations - Rabbit Awareness week is a great chance to get your rabbit up to date with their vaccinations. The recommended vaccination for bunnies is a combined vaccine protecting against Myxomatosis, Viral Haemorrhagic Disease strain 1 and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease strain 2 (VHD2). We see cases of all 3 of these diseases and sadly almost all cases are fatal so we recommend vaccinating both indoor and outdoor rabbits as all are at risk. Please give us a call on 01692 407126 to discuss how we can help protect your rabbit.

To celebrate Rabbit Awareness Week we are posting about rabbits this week! Can you tell the difference between bedding hay and feeding hay?
Feeding hay is grown specifically for feeding and is nutritionally rich, tasty, and high in fibre.
Bedding hay can often be cheaply manufactured and carry an unknown nutritional value. Hay is an essential part of a rabbits diet as it helps keep their intestinal tract moving properly and helps wear down teeth and avoid dental problems. We stock a range of hay and are happy to advise on different options and types of forage that would suit your rabbit. Please give us a call on 01692 407126 or book our free of charge nurse clinics
