Thank you for your kind 5* review, it means a lot to our team "Fantastic practice, Faye is an incredibly knowledgeable vet and very compassionate with explaining procedures. The reception team and nurses are also amazing, I cannot thank them enough for looking after my guinea pigs after being given false promises and conflicting information from other practices. We are so so grateful and will always take our animals here." Georgia

Guinea Pig Dental Disease - Guinea pigs frequently suffer from dental disease. Guinea pig teeth grow continually throughout their lives and are designed to be worn down continually by long fibre which is one of the reasons why constant access to hay or grass or long fibre is essential for guinea pig health. Overgrowth can happen for 2 main reasons : Primary dental disease and secondary dental disease. Primary dental disease is most frequently seen and arises due to the shape of a guinea pigs skull. With time we have bred guinea pigs to have shorter and flatter skulls rather than long and thin skulls. This changes the alignment of the teeth and means that they don't meet properly and are therefore not worn down by eating and the teeth become long. In guinea pigs elongated teeth arch over the tongue as in the photos below which stops the tongue moving and therefore stops the guinea pig from eating. Secondary dental disease occurs when another problem eg a bladder stone reduces the amount the guinea pig eats and therefore reduces the wear on the teeth resulting in overgrowth.
Molars (the back teeth) can only be inspected by using a special instrument such as an otoscope and it is always important that their teeth are checked regularly to detect any problems early.
Dental overgrowth should always be treated by mechanical burring not hand rasping or clipping as this reduces the damage to surrounding soft tissues and helps prevent damage to the underlying nerves and microfractures of the teeth which increases the changes of abscesses.
We are able to perform a complete range of dental treatments for guinea pigs including burring, dental xrays, tooth removal and abscess treatment. If you would like to talk to us about how we can help keep your Guinea pig in top condition please give us a call on 01692 407126

Meet Stan! This handsome fellow came to see us recently when his owner noticed he wasn't swallowing properly and seemed uncomfortable. He had recently been fed a hard chew. Our examination and x-rays showed the chew had become stuck in Stan's oesophagus. Our dedicated team of surgeons performed an intricate procedure to remove the offending lodged chew. We are delighted Stan is now back home and recovering well. Our team of vets are able to perform a large number of complex surgical procedures at our practice and are always happy to discuss how we can help your pet.

At Toll Barn Vets we are continually investing in the latest treatments to give your pets the best care possible. Introducing....CRYOTHERAPY! Cryotherapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses extreme cold to eliminate abnormal skin tissue such as warts and lesions. Unlike traditional surgery, there is no cutting involved. This user-friendly technique has been used for centuries in human medicine and is now commonly employed in veterinary practice. The precision of the device minimises damage to healthy surrounding tissue. The freezing process is quick, typically taking only a few seconds. After freezing, the tissue is allowed to thaw before repeating the freezing process. Cryotherapy is generally considered non painful and can be performed conscious as long as the lesion isn't in close proximity to a sensitive area such as the eye. If you would like to talk to us about the suitability of cryotherapy for your pet please contact us on 01692 407126

We are very proud to be a family run independent practice. What does it mean to be an independent practice? Toll Barn Vets is proud to be one of the few remaining independent practices in Norfolk. This means that we are not owned or part of a big chain of practices and remain a small family run single site practice. We believe this offers our clients and patients important benefits. We are not limited in the drugs and equipment we can purchase - we are able to continually invest in the most modern and effective equipment to diagnose and treat our patients. We can continue to invest in new state of the art facilities such as our laser therapy unit, onsite CT scanner and onsite luxury pet hotel. We can also remain a small friendly team who offer the highest standards of pet care without having to meet targets which we believe provides our patients with the best care possible. Our small team allows us to provide better continuity of care and helps us get to know you and your pets and tailor treatment plans to their specific needs. If you would like to know more about how we can help care for your pet please give us a call on 01692 407126

Evening consultations available this week! Our popular evening consultations are available between 7pm and 9.30pm Monday to Friday this week. We recognise that often clients have to take time off work to attend appointments and that some injuries or illnesses only become apparent when owners return from work on an evening so we are offering evening consultations for our clients to help our patients receive the best possible care as soon as possible. If you would like to find out more or book an appointment please give us a call on 01692 407126

Cutting edge technology at Toll Barn Vets!
The veterinary world is constantly evolving and we are proud of our commitment to continually assess new technologies and determine whether they could benefit our patients. Laser therapy is a cutting edge technology which often reduces reliance on medication which is particularly beneficial for chronic conditions and significantly improves our pets’ quality of life.
Laser Therapy reduces inflammation and provides pain relief. It is effective at treating acute and chronic pain as well as improving wound healing. It is most frequently performed in contact with the area being treated, however, for nervous patients it can be used without contact with the body and can also be applied to acupuncture points to achieve similar responses to traditional acupuncture without requiring application of needles.
Laser therapy is safe, painless and fast with sessions taking 5-10 minutes per area of treatment and most patients show significant improvement after 3-5 treatment sessions. Laser therapy stimulates the body’s own healing powers by stimulating cellular activity which reduces inflammation, provides pain relief, stimulates nerve regeneration and improves tissue repair often leading to a reduction in requirement for medication and reduced healing times. Laser therapy often forms part of the treatment for osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease (eg hip and elbow dysplasia), intervertebral disc disease (spinal pain), skin disease, post operative wound healing, sprains and strains, treatment of orthopaedic disease (eg cruciate ligament rupture) and periodontal disease. We are one of the few centres within East Anglia to have a Laser suitable to perform these treatments and are happy to discuss the suitability of laser therapy as part of your pets care.
