Here’s Peggy during her Exercise and Prevention Session. 💪🏼 Peggy wasn’t sure on the underwater treadmill at first but you’ll now find Peggy sat on the ramp longing to get in! As a breed prone to a spinal condition named IVDD, she attends semi regularly to maintain strength and stability of her paraspinal (back) and abdominal muscles. ⭐️ Here is Peggy showing off some trot work up an incline! Primula helped Peggy maintain an effective head position, instead of chasing bubbles! 🫧 #caninehydrotherapy #caninehydro #vetphysio #PreventionIsBetterThanCure #Preventivemaintenance #workout

🐶 Does your dog actually WALK on its walk, or does it prefer to trot instead?
💦 Why do we focus on walking during hydrotherapy?
A straight, balanced walk isn’t as easy as you think!
Being a 4-beat gait, each limb must be loaded independently. For the perfect walk, the neuromuscular system must work in dynamic equilibrium.
When your animal is uncomfortable, they alter their movement patterns to compensate. Thus, a walking assessment can be a useful tool in assessing dynamic comfort by owners, vets and hydro/physiotherapists.
Here’s a few things I look at when I assess an animal walking:
1️⃣ Facial expression - comfortable and compliant?
2️⃣ Lameness - head bobs or hip hikes?
3️⃣ Speed - what’s comfortable?
4️⃣ Limb flexion/flight arc - is it sufficient and equal?
5️⃣ Step and stride length - too long/short, is it equal?
So, can your dog walk slow, straight and controlled? Use walking as an easy marker exercise to assess progress, changes or discomfort.
If you’ve any concerns on how your animal moves, please consult your vet. With their agreement, a hydrotherapist/physiotherapist can help you improve your pets comfort, gait and quality of life.
🚶♂️Happy walking 👏🏻
