The relationship of Canine Obesity & Osteoarthirits (OA)

❓Did you know that osteoarthritis is most common cause of chronic pain in dogs?
❓Did you know it affects 80% of dogs over the age of 8 years old?
…It may also be affecting potentially up to 35% of dogs of all ages. (CAM, 2023)

As a painful and degenerative joint disease, our pets “slow” down and land - based exercise becomes painful. Reduced activity leads to progressive muscle wastage, weakness and secondary compensatory issues. Less activity often results in weight gain which further increases strain and discomfort of already weakened joints. As the circle continues, weight and discomfort will continue to increase unless of intervention.

A recent evidence review paper discussed how:
❗️Overweight dogs are more likely to develop stifle OA and cruciate injury than a healthy weight dog.
❗️Dog who lost more weight saw reduced OA related lameness.
❗️Thigh circumference increased with underwater treadmill and physiotherapy.
❗️Hip extension increased with under water treadmill and physiotherapy.
❗️Owners deemed their dog’s quality of life improved with underwater treadmill and physiotherapy.
(Pye et al., 2023)

💧 Hydrotherapy can support and steady OA degeneration and is an effective partial weight bearing exercise suitable for overweight animals. Hydrostatic pressure, buoyancy, and our physiotherapeutic interventions are just a few properties that significantly benefit our OA clients. Targeting both issues in a single session!

Her owner will continue the remedial exercise and home advice to continue the good work, but we’re always here for a quick check-up/top-up if needed!

🛑 REMINDER: Open Evening, THIS Thursday, 6-7:30!🛑

Meet the Client…

Name: Ellie
Loves: PRIMULA 🧀

Ellie, fondly known as ‘The Bionic Dog’, has had quite the year! After presenting lame, x-ray imaging and a specialist referral, Ellie now has 2 total hip replacements. Unfortunately, during her recovery of the second replacement, Ellie also fractured her femur requiring further surgery.

Following 8 months of careful rehabilitation, Ellie now attends AquaPaws weekly. After prolonged minimal exercise, we are assisting Ellie in improving her bone densit, rebuilding muscle mass and strength and ensuring correct range of motion with her new hips.

The combination of the waters buoyancy and resistance, plus a little homework, are perfect for this and Ellie is coming on leaps and bounds (with a little primula..).

Why choose AquaPaws Hydrotherapy as your dogs alternative exercise this Winter?
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
Even dogs who don't suffer from joint stiffness, the cold can cause muscles to become tense. For dogs with existing stiffness, this can be difficult to manage. A lack of exercise. Freezing temperatures mean staying indoors, short walks – or no walks at all – and a lot of lounging around.
Not only will our top of the range canine underwater treadmill keep your dog fit, happy and exercised during winter. Our in house physio Herriot Veterinary Physiotherapy will be able to aid any aches or issues your dog might be having at the same time during their session, so your getting 2 therapies for the price of one!
Whether your dog is older, younger, recovering, post op or just wanting to maintain their shape and fitness this winter why not give us a try and be delighted by the results!

What to look for in a hydro-physio centre?

1️⃣ Care & Compassion - The staff assisting your dog need to care! A lack of care and compassion will slow your pets journey, increase total fees and lead to suboptimal recovery. You should walk away from each session satisfied after each appointments.

2️⃣ Professionals - Appropriately qualified staff are vital for an effective and timely recovery. They may also identify areas of weakness before they become an issue. Ensure the people you trust to care for your animal are trained to do so, if you’re not sure, ask them! We are unique at Aquapaws in providing vet-physio led sessions, so our clients can be confident in our credentials and expertise.

3️⃣ Safety - Of pets, owners and staff themselves! No animal at AquaPaws is ever placed inside the treadmill without staff, nor without a harness with a control handle. Safety is paramount and should an emergency happen, it is vital that staff can swiftly respond.

When picking a hydro/physio centre, don’t be afraid to ask plenty of questions or arrange a look-around visit. Make sure their services suit both you and your dog. 🐶
