Are you a scent detection trainer who wants to offer a little more to your clients?
Book me to come and run introduction workshops to ScentOps trials & National Nosework Associate trials, hold mock trials & introduce you to the NNA Odour Recognition Tests Or I can come and judge a club or Bronze trial for your clients who perhaps have that competitive edge.
Pop me a message to find out more 🙂
Some spooky goings on tonight! ... I missed 2 dogs photos too! ... maybe they just vanished 😱
Keep moving! - When our dogs are searching and we see a change in their behaviour and believe they are working into the scent and locating it, as handlers we unintentionally change what we are doing. Probably one of the most common things is we stand still. (Mine is I walk backwards! Something I'm working on not to do!) Quite often we don't realise what we are doing but you can bet your bottom dollar your dog does. Ever heard of the clever Hans Effect? Well, this is what tends to happen, we give unconscious cues. If we know where the hide is our actions can signal to the dog the odour is near when we see their change in behaviour, this can in turn cause the dog to give false indications when working blind as we don't know if the interest is the dogs target odour but we still give that unconscious cue.
The best thing is to work blind early on and even if you see a change in your dogs behaviour and believe them to be working the intended odour just keep moving! We don't know if that change of behaviour is due to a different odour that has got your dogs interest. The only time your behaviour should change is when the dog has given a clear yes its here.
Easier said than done! But practise makes perfect! If you are working alone film yourself and you will soon see what your bad habit is.
He is a bit special 🤣🤣
What is the most bizarre thing your dog has brought you?
Gilbert update - Another trip to Huddersfield today. The Diazepam appears to have improved his back slightly, however, Gilbert was perhaps enjoying the Diazepam too much so we have dropped the dose!
His toe is causing a little more concern, he is back again on Monday for an xray, biopsy and a good poke about while he's under, as well as seeing if his back can be relaxed a bit more.
The dog that just keeps giving... and taking ... all my money 😭 but he's worth it 🥰
( this is an old video of Gilbert, I forgot how long his beard was! Sadly it's not like that now)
Nail maintenance doesn't have to be stressful for anyone!
It's so important that Gilbert is okay about having his nails maintained, especially as he has funny feet!
As his nails are so thick I struggle with nail clippers so we use a nail grinder.
If Gilbert says no, eg, moves away or looks worried I stop and slow thing down. During this he lifts his head, I stop and it turns out to be a pesky fly! He soon goes back to snoozing!
If you are having trouble with maintaining your dogs nails or grooming please do get in touch.
Nail maintenance doesn't have to he stressful!
Its so important that Gilbert is okay having his nails done especially as he has funny feet! His claws are so thick I struggle with nail clippers so we use a nail grinder. Taking things slowly, it's easy to get to this. If Gilbert says no I listen. He lifted his head during this, I stopped, then realised it was pesky fly bothering him!
Gilbert likes windy days! Not me so much !
All those smells he is getting, you can see his nose twitching. Can you see the moment he spots something ( not sure what)
Here's another Gilbert Vs chicken post.... I never asked for the down, his choice entirely and yes that is an actual treat I tossed to Gilbert... iam a treat tosser! 😱💪🔥
