Let’s talk nails🐾

Did you know that long nails can impact your dog’s posture, joint angulation, range of motion and biomechanics?

Our dog’s nails are continuously growing, so it’s important to maintain and look after them. Two ways in which you can check your dogs nail length is;

    1.    Visual - when looking at your dog’s feet, do their nails touch the ground?
    2.    Audio - when walking on a hard surface, like the pavement, can you hear the nails tapping?

If the answer is yes, your dog’s nails may need a trim!

Why is this so important?
If the nails are too long it affects the biomechanics of the foot but this also translates to the spine which alters posture. It alters range of motion in the digits in a negative way thus putting more strain on structures that otherwise would be okay.

Getting your dogs nails clipped is an easy way to rectify these issues and make your dog feel comfortable again. It’s just like if you were wearing a shoe that’s slightly too big for you, you can cope but over time it will start negatively impacting you.

Something else to check is are they being worn down evenly, and where is the wear on the nails?
This can show asymmetry in patterns of movement which may indicate an issue. If you notice this then it is worth getting a vet or vet physio to have a look at your dog.
