Time for another begging post 🥺 🙏🏻
The last couple of months has unfortunately seen a huge drop in donations with casualties and a huge drop in post interactions and donations (thanks to meta), we are now dangerously low on funds and if we can’t get these back up asap we may have to close our doors to new admissions and stop attending rescue call outs 😢💔
This really is the last thing we want to do especially being one of very few wildlife rescues in the local area and one who provides out of hours care and advice it really could be detrimental to our wildlife. But we have to see the harsh reality that we need to make sure we can fund and care for the birds who call here their home and care for current admissions.
We desperately need funds to cover an order for supplemental medications and emergency care products etc that can’t be ordered via the Amazon Wishlist, but we also have items on the list that you can send direct that we use and need! I have just updated the list but we really need critical care formula and kitchen towels currently,
I have added the Linktree site here where you can find links to the Amazon wishlist and our other donation methods https://linktr.ee/thewildlifehelpers
We are also desperate for puppy pads but prices on amazon are obscene! These can be bought in many stores like home bargains, B&M & pets at home in small and large packs. If anyone local to Northwich would like to pick some up while shopping we would appreciate it so much and can be dropped off or collected.
We also as always really appreciate second hand/old items for use,
Old bedding, blankhets, towels, gu type dessert pots, carriers (mostly small animal sized), pet crates, puppy pads, open or sealed dog, cat, rabbit & bird foods, unwanted gift sets/items suitable t for fundraising. Again drop off in Northwich or we are happy to collect locally.
And even just interacting with our posts, reacting, commenting & sharing is a huge help so please say hi if
Another swan released into the gathering flock at winsford marina recently! This beautiful girl found herself the target of a pairs brutal attacks in the middlewich gathering flock, it’s unknown as to the reasons why they had singled her out but she had been almost drowned a few times and was exhausted getting weaker after every attack so a lovely supporter and the amazing carer for the flock there contacted us to ask for our help.
After a rest overnight and good feed she was checked over and cleared for release after another couple of nights rest to ensure she had strength to defend/survive out in the wild again , this time in a new flock where she could make some new friends!
Fresh salad 🥗
One of our resident pidges, Lucky enjoying a snack. The birds here don't just get a plain seed diet they also enjoy a variety of fresh fruit, veg & herbs. Plus get other seeds & grains as treats/for variety
Something like this salad plant is perfect too for enrichment while they shred it themselves, it's always fun to watch them eating it.
A small insight for people to see 🥰
Any help towards their expenses would be hugely appreciated! Amazon wishlist is full of things for the birds and Especially any pennies towards their new top notch home we are building which I plan to fill full of different things to help them live a happy life, links to both below via the Linktree site.
Shakerley mere/botulism update!!
Edited to add:
on 6/04 we had a call again to one dead goose and one possible start of symptoms 💔
Unfortunately we are still attending cases of botulism in the waterfowl at Shakerley mere, in the last week we’ve had to rescue 2 Canadian geese including the one in the video below,
Unfortunately the other one was already in advanced stages of paralysis and passed away at the rescue who was treating them, the recorded goose thankfully is doing really well and the paralysis effects are already reversing and she can use her legs again! You can see in the video the neck/head paralysis has started however she did manage to slightly respond to touch and move her head round.
PLEASE keep your dogs out of the water and DO NOT allow them to drink any water either when visiting the mere!!
The avian Botulism toxin IS transmissible to canines and it can kill them, if your dog has access to the water please consult with you veterinarian immediately.
And please those visiting the lake keep reporting to us if you find and birds looking unwell! They will start by looking sleepy and just drifting in the water or swimming strangely, this then progresses and their head will often just be laid on the back and they won’t move even if food etc is thrown to them or a danger like a dog walks past, it may seems like they are asleep but if your not sure throwing a small stone next to them should provide a response!
And finally please if you are able to donate towards the costs of helping these birds their care/treatment and monitoring the situation please consider doing so, you can via the links and details below ⬇️

This beautiful young girl was yesterday’s rescue!
We were alerted to a post on a local facebook group about a swan who was out on the towpath seemingly injured!
We knew straight away that this cygnet had crash landed in another pairs territory and that it was highly likely the male swan has tried to kill the intruder and she needed checking for injury’s sustained during an attack and help moving to a safe location!
We rushed straight there and on arrival found that another rescue organisation had already arrived prior to us, unfortunately they weren’t aware of the way swan territory & behaviours work and so placed her back on the water assuming she would be safe,
Thankfully she had hopped straight back out the water but this time she had run into dense thicket filled with thorns, which was on a steep banking! we quickly with the help of a lovely couple located her and climbed up through the bushes to get her,
She was then taken for a thorough vet check over which found she had been very lucky and apart from exhaustion after fighting for her life she only sustained a few broken blood feathers which would soon regrow.
She was then later released after a rest & feed into a non breeding flock with lots of friends her age, it was confirmed on the local group that she had indeed been attacked and very luckily for her a pair of kind dog walkers stopped and saved her by pulling her out the water!
Please if you see cygnets being attacked at this time of year don’t leave them to be killed and contact us or any rescue for help!!

Sunday Evening saw the long awaited return of Dylan at Nantwich lake,
Unlike when we rescued him and he couldn’t stand let alone barely walk he quickly ran! back to the water, he had a quick bathe before slowly swimming over to his mate who was missing him and shouting him over. He was rather uninterested for a good while 😆 eventually they met up and well we think it was a very happy reunion (video courtesy of follower Alexandra in the comments).
