By reporting dead wild birds, you are helping us understand:

🦆 the risk to different species groups of wild birds
🐓 the risk posed to poultry & other captive birds
🦊the risk of overspill into wild mammals.

If you spot dead wild birds in Great Britain, use the online service to report it https://www.gov.uk/guidance/report-dead-wild-birds or call the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77

Reports are triaged and not all birds will be collected. Wild birds are susceptible to a range of diseases and injuries and most dead birds will not have been infected with avian influenza.

Find out more information on how and why we monitor avian influenza virus infection in wild birds and wild mammals on GOV.UK https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/avian-influenza-bird-flu-infection-in-wild-birds-and-wild-mammals

Another story remembering the brave pigeons who saved hundreds of lives in the war,
This is Cher ami who is one of the more well known heroes but not well known enough!

Thank you Cher ami for your service, you won’t be forgotten 🎖️🕊️

On this Veteran's day, I am thinking about how we don't deserve pigeons and I hope we can be kinder to them! Cher Ami received the Animals in War & Peace Medal of Bravery posthumously in 2019.

People may deem our beautiful feathered friends as vermin but they saved many lives

We will never forget how precious our feathered friends truely are

We remember them 🕊️🎖️

Remembrance Sunday 10th of November

and let us remember and never forget that in WW1 100,000 pigeons served
In WW2 200,000 pigeons served of which 32 where awarded the Dickin medal {animal Victoria cross)

'served' used to save humans!

One of those pigeons was White Vision
We remember them all not only the ones that were awarded human medals

White Vision ( surp.41.l.3089 ) bred by the Fleming brothers of Motherwell, Scotland was awarded the Dickin medal on 2nd Dec 1943
In October 1943 she was released from a flying boat that was forced to ditch in the north sea, radio contact was lost and the eleven air crew were stranded.
She flew 60 mile plus against strong head winds to return and deliver the life saving message
.......... from the WW2 peoples war archive..........................

Part of RAF Coastal Command operated from the Shetland Islands, using Catalinas to patrol the northern sea routes looking for U Boats returning to Germany. The crews used to go out on 22 hour missions, searching for and, if possible, sinking any U Boats. As each plane ws ready to leave the crew collected two pigeons from the lofts, just as a fail-safe in case the radios packed up or any emergencies arose. In October 1942, Ted Southern was asked to sustitute for another crew member on a mission, so he was not flying with his own crew, which was always a little unsettling. Towards the end of the flight the weather turned really bad with gales and fog, so the Catalina was not allowed to land at Sullom Voe in the Shetlands, and was directed to Aberdeen, but there the storm conditions were just as bad and the plane was directed to Oban. With petrol running low, and finally running out, the plane was forced to ditch in the Atlantic. There was no radio contact, so the captain put messages as to their location into the leg capsules of each pigeon and sent them off. There were two life rafts, but accidentally one of them drifted off with only two men in it, which left too many men for the other raft, and everyone voted to stay on board the plane.
One of the pigeons never made it home, but White Vision flew 60 miles against the gale force wind with visibility down to about zero, and landed exhausted and with lots of feathers missing. From the message in the capsule, calculating wind speed and tidal drift, the RAF sent out the launch and came across the Catalina after about forty hours. As the last man jumped the gap between the tossing plane and the launch, the plane immediately sank, as though someone or something had been holding it up until that moment. The two men who had drifted off were picked up later, with the result that White Vision was responsible for saving 11 men, and was awarded the Dicken Medal, one of about 33 pigeons to be honoured in this way. White Vision was bred by Fleming Brothers of Motherwell, and she lived until 1953. How many other people can say that they owe their existence to a pigeon? If she had not reached her loft, the crew would have drowned, Ted Southern would not have survived and married my Mum and I wouldn't be here writing this.

Little miracle 😍 she arrived on the absolute brink of death, we thought were keeping her safe while she passed but then a miracle happened, with warmth her body stopped shutting down and slowly she gained strength, she was rehydrated slowly and after 24hrs of feeding she was back to being a happy healthy baby!

Some great advice from our friends at linjoy!

A reminder to anyone that has any type of netting down - please think of the dangers it can pose to wildlife and take steps to minimise the risk.

In this case it was a kids football net. This hedgehog from Ashby found himself trapped in the netting. In his attempt to free himself, he only became more tangled up.
The lady found him the next day and cut him out but was unable to get it off so brought him to us. We attempted to cut it off but it was completely tangled around his front legs.
Our vet anaesthetised him to remove any netting and he was given pain relief and a long acting antibiotic for a friction burn on his right leg.

He has now gone home and been released. The football net has been discarded. Football nets can be rolled up and tied to make sure animals can’t walk into it. Sometimes the outcome is not a happy ending 😞

Time for another begging post 🥺 🙏🏻

The last couple of months has unfortunately seen a huge drop in donations with casualties and a huge drop in post interactions and donations (thanks to meta), we are now dangerously low on funds and if we can’t get these back up asap we may have to close our doors to new admissions and stop attending rescue call outs 😢💔

This really is the last thing we want to do especially being one of very few wildlife rescues in the local area and one who provides out of hours care and advice it really could be detrimental to our wildlife. But we have to see the harsh reality that we need to make sure we can fund and care for the birds who call here their home and care for current admissions.

We desperately need funds to cover an order for supplemental medications and emergency care products etc that can’t be ordered via the Amazon Wishlist, but we also have items on the list that you can send direct that we use and need! I have just updated the list but we really need critical care formula and kitchen towels currently,

I have added the Linktree site here where you can find links to the Amazon wishlist and our other donation methods https://linktr.ee/thewildlifehelpers

We are also desperate for puppy pads but prices on amazon are obscene! These can be bought in many stores like home bargains, B&M & pets at home in small and large packs. If anyone local to Northwich would like to pick some up while shopping we would appreciate it so much and can be dropped off or collected.

We also as always really appreciate second hand/old items for use,
Old bedding, blankhets, towels, gu type dessert pots, carriers (mostly small animal sized), pet crates, puppy pads, open or sealed dog, cat, rabbit & bird foods, unwanted gift sets/items suitable t for fundraising. Again drop off in Northwich or we are happy to collect locally.

And even just interacting with our posts, reacting, commenting & sharing is a huge help so please say hi if you’re reading! And finally I want to say a huge thank you to all our amazing supporters again it really does mean a huge amount to us! And I hope you enjoy this video of resident pigeon fernando having a splash 😍

Another swan released into the gathering flock at winsford marina recently! This beautiful girl found herself the target of a pairs brutal attacks in the middlewich gathering flock, it’s unknown as to the reasons why they had singled her out but she had been almost drowned a few times and was exhausted getting weaker after every attack so a lovely supporter and the amazing carer for the flock there contacted us to ask for our help.

After a rest overnight and good feed she was checked over and cleared for release after another couple of nights rest to ensure she had strength to defend/survive out in the wild again , this time in a new flock where she could make some new friends!

An update on our renovation project for better facilities for the birds!

We are extremely busy currently cramming in as much work as possible between the usual rescues and battling illness and personal issues too,

So far we’ve absolutely filled to the brim a giant skip! We’ve managed to complete the base of the indoor avairy, we’ve put up film on the window and built the window stopper so the birds can’t escape while the window is open for air! The flooring is being laid currently and the main panels are being built and fitted too, once this is done it’s just adding final touches like perches and sealing the edges etc and it’ll be ready for use!
We are so excited to complete it and get the birds in there!

As far as the outdoor work goes, the ‘indoor’ outhouse section that the avairy will lead off has been cleared fully and is being prepped ready for a lick of paint, the garden work is going well with the majority of the area cleared of the insane amount of wild overgrowth.

So far we’ve spent a total of just over £800 on the building materials, skip hire and air filtering unit, we owe a huge thanks to an amazing friend and supporter who covered £300 of the skip hire cost! We are still lost for words, at the moment the money is being loaned from a very kind person but this has to be paid back as soon as possible.

We estimate the costs still will be another £1,000 - £2,000 with the materials needed for building the avairy outside and the cost of multiple trips to the recycling centre with a large amount of waste!

Please if you can help donate anything towards this huge cost it is appreciated beyond words it really does mean alot to us!

The last month has been a very busy time with the local swans!

We’ve rescued a whole family (mum, dad & cygnet) after they became contaminated by vegetable oil and lost their waterproof coating!
They were taken for cleaning/treatment to clean the oil off their feathers allowing them to regain their natural waterproofing before being released back! Luckily we had the amazing help of another rescue (WWR wings wildlife & bird rescue) who we also volunteer with.

We rescued 2 crash landed cygnets, one was thankfully uninjured and able to be released with a non breeding flock, the other unfortunately had bumped his head and so needed treatment while the wound healed he’s since been release in a gathering flock also!

We were called to a swan in a ditch who had been there for over 48 hours, she had been chased out the water by the resident air and had sought sanctuary in a large water drainage ditch, unfortunately this was empty bar some muddy puddles and she had become stuck, she was severely dehydrated and disoriented so after being retrieved she was taken for treatment, where it was discovered she actually had some what is believed long term effects from having influenza and neurological symptoms meant she was not fit for release so is now living life at the sanctuary!

We were called to reports of a swan stuck in a field and so checked that out! Luckily the swan was just grazing and actually happily made their way back to a pond in a neighbouring field!

We attended to a crash landed swan on a road near to the canal, it was thought that he may have been injured but thankfully after thorough check over he was given the all clear and he was released just up the canal into the flock.

Also we’ve rescued a swan who had been seen trailing their wing in the water while they were swimming, after a few visits we finally caught them and they were off for treatment, unfortunately the wing is broken & dislocated but we’re hoping that it will heal!

Another crash landed swan found themselves confused after landing not far from home, a kind member of public started carefully helping to guide them towards the marina while we headed over, we arrived and helped stop the traffic and helped to guide the swan the rest of the way back to safety!

Unfortunately we also attended to two deaths and a friend helped retrieve the bodies and both were then dealt with accordingly and the swans were laid to rest.😔

We are so thankful to all our supporters who help us make this possible without your kindness and generosity it just wouldn’t be possible to attend to all these call outs and take them to the amazing sanctuary who helps treat these special birds,

Can you help? We are desperately low on formula for our hand rear babies right now and with a still very steady stream of pigeon & dove chicks coming in we are using a lot!!

You can help send us some formula directly by ordering via our Amazon wishlist and they will deliver to us! Or by sending a gift card towards the cost too. If you’d prefer to send money to us we’d also be extremely grateful! We also are going through lots of seed mixes with growing beaks eating lots!

An early start this morning when we were alerted to a post on a local Facebook community group regarding a cygnet who’s head had become stuck down to its neck, the same family who just a few weeks back had a cygnet in trouble with fishing tackle 😢

Luckily it was an easy rescue with the family located and cygnet quickly caught and hooks removed and she was released back to her awaiting parents & siblings, she is very lucky the community looks out for the family otherwise much longer and serious damage could’ve occurred meaning she would’ve had to be taken for further treatment and wouldn’t have been able to return home.

Check out the release videos in the comments, sounds crazy we know but you can even spot at the end where mum comes back the waters edge and nods/chuffs her way of communicating appreciation to us for helping her cygnet, swans truely are magnificent and special birds!

One of our resident pidges, Lucky enjoying a snack. The birds here don't just get a plain seed diet they also enjoy a variety of fresh fruit, veg & herbs. Plus get other seeds & grains as treats/for variety
Something like this salad plant is perfect too for enrichment while they shred it themselves, it's always fun to watch them eating it.

A small insight for people to see 🥰
Any help towards their expenses would be hugely appreciated! Amazon wishlist is full of things for the birds and Especially any pennies towards their new top notch home we are building which I plan to fill full of different things to help them live a happy life, links to both below via the Linktree site.
