What is Hand stripping? 🤔
We often get asked about hand stripping, so here’s the scoop! Hand stripping is a specialised grooming technique used mainly for wire-haired breeds, like terriers and some spaniels. Unlike clipping, which cuts the coat, hand stripping involves gently removing dead hairs by hand to promote a healthy, vibrant coat. This process helps maintain the coat’s natural texture, colour, and protective qualities.
✂️ Why do it? Hand stripping is essential for keeping a wiry coat healthy and coarse, which protects the dog’s skin and keeps their unique look intact. It also allows new, healthy hair to grow, keeping them cool and comfortable.
🐾 How neutering affects the coat: After neutering, hormonal changes can make the coat softer and sometimes thicker. While the DNA of the hair doesn’t change, these shifts can stop the coat from “blowing” or shedding as it did before, which can make hand stripping less effective. That’s why it’s important to assess each dog individually to determine if hand stripping is the right choice for them.
❤️ Only when it’s ready: We only hand strip when the coat is in the correct “stage”—meaning it’s ready to shed naturally. Done at the right time, hand stripping is painless and comfortable for the dog. Abby here is a pro at making sure your dog has a gentle, stress-free experience every time
