As a bird owner and avian vet the current bird flu situation is certainly 'challenging' and for those who know me and my obsessive falconry tendencies, will realise that this decision is not taken lightly, but even with all biosecurity measures in place, I have decided to stop flying completely for this season and return my tiercel to his 'wild bird proof' aviary.

This decision has been based on a number of factors including the following;
1. The sheer & unrelenting number of cases this year in captive flocks nationwide

2. The number and variety of wild bird species involved

3. The virulence of this H5N1 strain that appears to kill birds of prey in less than 72 hours and infectivity demonstrated by a startling statistic that one wild bird dropping can contain up to 1000 infectious doses, thus contaminated environment is potentially as risky as bird-to-bird contact.

Further information including links to the relevant APHA pages can be found at our website

https://avianveterinaryservices.co.uk/avian-influenza-2022/

I hope this helps and just wanted to make sure everyone is as well informed as possible for personal risk assessment & decision making.

I am reliably informed that there are now at least Global discussions regarding vaccination, which in my mind anyway, must be the most logical and responsible action long term. Please find attached a link to a petition to allow the vaccination of captive companion/pet birds.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/628041

Best wishes
Richard

Currently the vaccine is limited only for use in very specific cases (zoos) and within England only. Avian influenza (AI) could now be classed as endemic. It has spread throughout the UK in wild and captive birds. The vaccine should be allowed for use in captive birds.
