Prevention is better than cure and these simple steps will help improve your pets oral health and reduce the risk of tooth and gum disease.

🦷Tooth Brushing- Brushing your dog or cat’s teeth is ‘gold standard’ because it is the most effective way to remove plaque. Always use a toothbrush and tooth paste designed for pets as some of the ingredients in human toothpaste are toxic to cats.
🦷Water Additives- If you find it difficult to brush your pets teeth, you can use a water additive which can be added to drinking water to help reduce plaque formation and freshen breath.
🦷Diet- Wet food diets provide no abrasive action against the teeth but dry food kibble can be more abrasive and beneficial in the prevention of plaque build up.
🦷Checks- If your pet with tolerate it, look inside their mouth regularly to check for signs such as redness of the gums or brown staining on the teeth.

During routine consultations at the practice, the vets ensure to check the oral health of your dog and advise where necessary for dental procedures such as a scale and polish🩺
If you wish for your pet to have a dental examination, please call on 01606359789 and our friendly staff with assist you🐾📞🦷

This season’s star patient goes to, ‘Gertrude’ the Speckled Sussex chicken, who unfortunately had an accident during a winter storm and ended up with a broken leg 🐓🩺

She was brought into practice and examined by vet Caroline. A plan was established to fix the broken bones and return her back to the flock when she was ready.

Gertrude was anaesthetised to enable Caroline to take x-rays of the leg, confirming the type and position of the fracture. When anaesthetising avian species, a lot of the anaesthesia principles are like that of more commonly anaesthetised pets such as dogs and cats. Gertrude was maintained under anaesthesia using the same aesthetic gases as all our other species. She had an endotracheal tube placed in her trachea so she could continue to breathe the gas and remain asleep. An intravenous catheter was placed in her wing vein so that we could administer fluids during the procedure. She was kept warm on a heat mat and under some bubble wrap to help her maintain her temperature. She was monitored throughout the anaesthetic by our skilled veterinary nurses.

A splint was placed on the broken leg to stabilise the bones and allow healing to take place. Gertrude was started on pain relief and antibiotics as she also sustained a wound during the accident. Her owner settled her in the kitchen for cage rest and to help keep the dressing clean and dry, also making sure, that she had easy access to food and water whilst she wasn’t so mobile. She seemed to enjoy life in a warm house while her companions embraced the snow!

Gertrude was anaesthetised weekly for the next 2 weeks to remove the splint and re-xray the fracture to monitor the healing. After 3 weeks there was sufficient healing and stability in the fracture, so the splint was removed. Gertrude had another week of house rest before being let loose with the others. Judging by the photos Gertrude’s owner has sent us, she was enjoying bossing about the other pets! Gertrude is now back outside with her chicken companions enjoying her free-range lifestyle once again💚

Cats teeth are evolved to help them hunt, kill and eat prey. They aid in self-defence and are also used as a great tool for grooming. Most kittens have a total of 26 milk/deciduous teeth which will later be replaced by 30 adult teeth by the time they have reached maturity.

Cats have 4 different types of teeth 🦷

🐾 Incisors- Tiny teeth at the front of your cats mouth, designed to grip food/prey
🐾Canines- ‘Fangs’, used to pe*****te and shred tissue
🐾 Premolars- Located behind the canines, used to cut and crush food into chunks to enable swallowing
🐾Molars- At the back of the mouth, used to crush food

Cats can only move their jaws up and down, so cannot chew food in the way that we can🐱!

This month we will be celebrating Dental Health Awareness Month!🦷

We want to share with you some important information regarding your pets oral hygiene, tips on how to maintain and improve your pets oral health and much more!

Dental health is extremely important in helping your pet maintain a happy and healthy life. Oral disease can have many bad consequences, which may lead to your pet being in pain and discomfort.

Over 80% of dogs 🐶 and 70% of cats 🐱 develop periodontal disease by the age of 3, so caring for your pets mouth is an important part of their preventative health regime🐾💚

Periodontal disease is severe inflammation in the mouth, caused by a build-up of plaque and tartar on the teeth and gums. The most common conditions are:

🦷 Gingivitis- Caused by plaque bacteria which gather in the space between the teeth and the gum, causing inflammation. Bad breath can be caused by the volatile sulphurs released by the bacteria. This is generally reversible with treatment.
🦷 Periodontitis- Untreated gingivitis can lead into this more serious condition which can cause irreversible damage.

🪴Poisonous Plants🪴

House plants are a great way to bring the outdoors into our homes, but unfortunately some of the plants we use to brighten up our houses can be dangerous to our pets.

We recommend only keeping non-toxic plants in your house, but if you do have a plant that could cause problems, make sure it’s kept out of paws’ reach at all times. Don’t forget to check bouquets of flowers, too – especially if they contain lilies!

January is Weight Loss Awareness Month!!

Did you know that 1 in 3 pet parents do not recognise their pets weight issue, with 97% of owners struggling to recognise a healthy weight for their pet🐶🐱🐾

Why Weight Loss Matters for Pets...

Much like humans, pets face significant health risks when they carry extra weight. Obesity in pets can lead to:

- Joint Pain and Mobility Issues: Excess weight puts undue pressure on joints, increasing the risk of arthritis.
- Heart and Respiratory Problems: Carrying extra pounds makes it harder for pets to breathe and for their hearts to function efficiently.
- Diabetes: Overweight pets are at a much higher risk of developing diabetes, which requires lifelong management.

If you think your pet would benefit from a weight clinic/body condition assessment and you would like some advice on your pets diet, please do not hesitate to contact the practice to book in for a nurse consultation☎️

🐭🐰Keeping Small Pet's Warm This Winter🐰🐭

Small pets like hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits need extra care to stay warm and comfortable during the winter months. Here are some tips for keeping them cosy:

💚Indoor Housing: If your small furry friends typically live outdoors, consider bringing them indoors for the winter. Indoor temperatures are easier to control and maintain.
💚Proper Bedding: Use warm, soft bedding materials in their cages or enclosures. Options like hay, straw, or pet-safe blankets can provide insulation and comfort.
💚Warm Hideouts: Provide cosy hideouts or small shelters within their enclosure. These give your pets a place to huddle and stay warm.
💚Extra Bedding Changes: Check and change their bedding more frequently during winter to keep it dry and warm.
💚Heat Pads/Hotties: Some small pets benefit from pet-safe heating pads placed under a part of their enclosure, ensuring a warm spot to rest.
💚Limit Drafts: Ensure their enclosure is draft-free, and shield them from cold winds or direct drafts.
💚Limited Outdoor Time: If you must keep them outdoors, limit their time outside, and make sure their outdoor enclosure is well-insulated and shielded from the elements.
💚Monitoring: Keep a close eye on your pets for signs of discomfort, such as shivering or seeking warmth. If you notice any signs of distress, take them to a warmer area.
💚Healthy Diet: Provide a balanced diet to help them maintain their body heat. Ensure they have access to fresh water, as staying hydrated is crucial for temperature regulation.
