With the colder and damper weather upon us, our older pets may start to slow down a little and begin to struggle more with their movement. Cold weather can make your pets arthritic symptoms worse, as joints may become stiffer and more painful 🐾🐶🐱

How can you help your pets?

- Provide a warm sleeping space. Pets with osteoarthritis (OA) may appreciate having an extra blanket or warmer surface to rest on during the colder months. Move your pet's bed away from any drafts and off bare floors. You could offer a pet-safe heated bed or blanket.

-Keep your pet moving. Pets with OA benefit from regular, low intensity activity, such as walking. During the colder, wetter months, dogs especially may not move as much if you spend less time outside on walks. Try to maintain a regular walking routine, despite the cold weather, or encourage your pet to move around more inside, with toys or enrichment games.

-See if your pet will wear a coat. An additional layer may help keep pets with OA warmer outside and encourage them to keep moving. Some pets may appreciate having that extra layer on inside as well.

-Veterinary Advice. If your pets start to show signs of: lameness, swollen joints, difficulty to stand, limping, stiffness, reluctancy to walk or abnormal behaviour, please contact the practice.

Medications and supplements can then be prescribed and tailored to your pet's needs. Arthritis cannot be cured, however it can be managed and progression delayed, improving your pet's quality of life.

Please call the practice on 01606359789, if you would like advice or to book your senior pet in for a consultation with one of our vets 🐾☎️💚🩺

Sooty, the 6 year old Goldfish, was recently presented in practice with a large lump on his left side. This was affecting his ability to swim, dive to the bottom of the tank and maintain buoyancy. Sooty’s owner had presumed that the only option was for him to be euthanised, as the lump was affecting him so much. Fortunately, Caroline one of our vets, has experience with fish, so there was a much happier outcome for Sooty🙂

In order to remove the lump, Sooty was to be anaesthetised, this was done using a specific aquatic in water anaesthetic drug. Under the anaesthetic, the lump was removed. Sooty was also given pain relief and the area was covered with mouth ulcer cream to aid in healing. This was to be applied by Sooty’s owner at home for a few days following the surgery.

We are pleased to report that Sooty has made a full recovery and is enjoying life! Once again, he is showing off his best fish moves to his companion Sweep 🐠

Facts about Guinea pigs that you might not know… 🐾

1. Despite their name, they don’t come from Guinea 🇬🇳
They don’t originate from West Africa as their name may suggest, they in fact are native to the Andes mountains of South America, which includes parts of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia.

2. They’re not related to pigs 🐷
Although male guinea pigs are called ‘boars’ and females ‘sows’, they are actually rodents.

3. They don’t want to live with rabbits 🐰
Rabbits can bully guinea pigs, because of their size but also because they have different ways of communicating. They also have different nutritional needs, although some aspects of their diets are similar. A specific type of bacteria harmless to rabbits, can cause serious respiratory illness in guinea pigs.

So, although they are both sociable and have similar lifestyles, they much prefer the company of their own species⭐️!

4. They need vitamin C 🙌🏼
Guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C, although unusual for mammals, so they need it from their food. A lack of this vitamin can cause ‘scurvy’- symptoms include weight loss, tiredness and swollen joints.

5. They at a special type of their own poo 💩
It’s completely normal, and an essential part of their digestion, as it allows them to get all the proper nutrients from their food. Guinea pigs produce two types of poo, one solid and one soft. The softer squishy pellets are called ‘caecotrophs’ are made from vitamins and proteins. This is the kind they eat, in doing so, they are able to absorb all the nutrients they need.

6. They like to chat with each other 💚
Guinea pigs often make various squeaks, quiet grunts and other quite distinctive noises to communicate with one another. A ‘wheek-wheek’ sound is usually a sign of excitement or anticipation of seeing a friend, whereas a low ‘purring’ sound can be heard when they feel calm and comfortable together.

🌅🎃Autumn is a beautiful season… but please be mindful of what your pet is eating 🐾

Conkers are extremely poisonous and if eaten can cause your dog to:
🍁 Be sick
🍁 Have an upset stomach
🍁 Dribble
🍁 Be off their food

They are also a choking hazard and can cause a gastrointestinal blockage if swallowed.

Please see below, harmful and safe autumnal foods for your pets to eat🐱🐶 (All foods additional to your pets regular diet, should be fed in moderation to prevent gastric issues and tummy upsets🎃)

If you have any concerns that your pet may have ingested something harmful, please contact the practice immediately on 01606359789 ☎️

⭐️Star Patient⭐️

Walter, the 3yo, Domestic Shorthaired, presented in practice after sustaining an injury to his tail.

It is unknown how the injury occurred, as Walter lives on a farm and spends a lot of his time outside. It is suspected that the injury was sustained by pull/entrapment. Unfortunately, Walter had lost over half of his tail, with the remaining part missing both hair and skin.

Radiographs were advised to check for other potential injuries and uncover the severity of his remaining tail damage. Luckily, the xrays showed that no other injuries were sustained, however it was decided that the remaining part of Walter’s tail were to be amputated.

The amputation surgery, and recovery were a success. Walter has since visited for post op checks, and his wound is healing brilliantly! His owners report that he is doing well, and is back to his normal mischievous self!! 🐾💚🐱🙌🏼
