Know when to stop โ๏ธ
In this video, Dotty gives me a clear signal that she doesn't want to continue playing. When I stop playing, she walks away.
Play
It's important to stop every now and again when playing with your dog to see if they are still enjoying the game you're playing. In this video, Dotty stops towards the end and looks out of the window. I take this as she has either seen something or she wants to stop the type of play we are currently playing.
It is also important to check if your dog is enjoying the play. It sounds as though Dotty isn't enjoying the play style in this video, but she continues the tug of war style, shakes the toy and stays close to me when I leave the toy alone rather than walking off or taking it with her.
Body language....
As soon as I start walking towards Lexi with my camera pointing towards her face, she does these behaviours to show me she is a little uncomfortable with what I'm doing...
โช๏ธ lip licks
โช๏ธ head turn away
โช๏ธ soft, blinky eyes
โช๏ธ looking everywhere except the camera
โช๏ธ ears flattening
As soon as I walk away...
โช๏ธ head turns back to face me
โช๏ธ ears up
โช๏ธ eyes wider and more focused
โช๏ธ no lip licks
โช๏ธ head up
It's important for you to understand your dog's body language so you can manage your interactions with them much better โค๏ธ
๐พ COCO ๐พ
Coco used to dart about on the end of the lead, always pulling and rushing to get everywhere. This led to her walks becoming quite a stressful event.
We have been working on loose lead walking in terms of playing pattern games. The owner will count up to 3, and every time she says the number 3, Coco gets a treat. This encourages Coco to stay close to her owner whilst checking in on her for a treat. Eventually, Coco will automatically check in with her owner and will learn to stay close on a loose lead.
REACTIVITY TRAINING
Remember where you started and how far you've come! You are doing better than you think!
Such a good decision from Wilson in this video...WITHOUT his owners actually having to intervene. This is the type of behaviour and good decision making you can achieve with practice, patience and a good understanding of body language!
RECALL
The difference in this video compared to the previous video is that you can see Wilson is walking slowly up to the other dogs and decides to recall on his own without his owners using the whistle. (As we were about to use the recall whistle Wilson had made the decision himself to recall. In this instance, we would have used his marker word, not the whistle, but it all happened at the same time. If this ever happens to you during training, don't worry. Just forget it and go back to the same training.
Wilson did extremely well for his first recall session, and I was very proud of him ๐ not only did we get to practice recall, we also saw other dogs so we could do some behaviour modifications as well!
RECALL
In this video, Wilson is trotting in stalking mode towards the other dogs on the field. He reaches the end of the line and the owner uses 2 pips on the whistle to recall him. He comes back straight away for his reward.
This is a situation where the owner has had to step in and use the whistle recall as Wilson was unable to recall himself when getting too far away from his owners.
Very good job Wilson and his owners ๐
Negative punishment
Negative punishment simply means you are TAKING AWAY the desired object/thing your dog wants in order to get the behaviour you want.
You can see in this video clip that I use no words, I just move my hand away or close my hand whenever Millie decides to take the treat rather than offer me a calm sit. Eventually you can see that I offer her some food and she stays in a sitting position and it's for me to give it to her.
It is so important to give your dog a choice. When they start learning a different way of thinking and behaving earns them reqards, you will have a much calmer and more optimistic dog in the future!
Needy McNeedy for all the strokes and cuddles!
The look of 'please don't stop' ๐
Cute little puppy in for his second vaccination ๐ safe to say I did not want to give him back to his owner!
๐ Knowing your dog's energy requirement is so important to know how much food to feed your dog. If your dog is fed the correct amount for their activity level, you should see fewer alternative behaviours and have a more patient/obedient dog ๐
