🐹Teeth Care: Guinea pigs have teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives. To keep their teeth healthy and prevent overgrowth, provide them with plenty of hay, which helps wear down their teeth naturally. 🦷🌿

Chew Toys: Offer safe chew toys like apple or willow twigs to help keep their teeth in check. Avoid muesli mixes as they can lead to dental problems due to selective feeding.

Regular Checks: Regularly check your guinea pig’s teeth for signs of overgrowth or misalignment. If you notice any
issues, consult your vet for a professional trimming.

Signs of Dental Problems: Watch for signs of dental issues such as drooling, difficulty eating, or weight loss. Early detection and treatment are crucial for maintaining your guinea pig’s health.

Fun Fact: If you see a milky fluid from your guinea pigs' eye, check carefully as this is usually a natural substance that is secreted to help with grooming their faces.

🐹Regular Grooming: Guinea pigs need regular grooming to keep their coats in top condition. Long-haired breeds especially benefit from daily brushing to prevent tangles and mats.

🧴🐾 Besides brushing, check your guinea pig’s nails regularly and trim them as needed to prevent overgrowth and discomfort.
Bathing should be done sparingly, as guinea pigs can easily catch a chill and it can cause unnecessary stress by stripping away their scent.

Some guinea pigs may develop a hard growth on their foot pads called a foot spur. These are harmless and can be trimmed down to prevent discomfort.

Fun Fact: Guinea pigs have a grease gland on their lower back. The purpose of this is to secrete a waxy substance that is used to help with grooming and scent marking.

🐹 Perfect Housing: Guinea pigs need a spacious and comfortable home to thrive. A large hutch is ideal, with a minimum size of 1.5 x 1m, and an attached run of at least 2 x 1m for exercise.

Ensure the hutch is weatherproof and
raised off the ground. 🏠 The more guinea pigs you have the bigger size needed for cage space.

Bedding: Use fleece bedding or wood shavings. Avoid using straw or sawdust, as these can be dusty and irritate their respiratory system.

Exercise Area: Guinea pigs need constant access to a large exercise area. Make sure it’s safe, free from mud, and
has plenty of tunnels, shelters, and toys to keep them entertained.

Temperature: Keep their environment between 18-24°C (65-75°F). Avoid placing their cage in direct sunlight or drafty areas to prevent overheating or chilling.

Indoor vs. Outdoor: Guinea pigs can live indoors or outdoors, but indoor housing offers better protection from extreme weather and predators. If kept outdoors, ensure their hutch is secure and insulated.

Custom Cages: Custom cages are very common now for indoor setups and allow you to maximize the space they can have. These setups can be tailored to fit your home and provide ample room for your guinea pigs to explore and
play.

Enrichment: Provide plenty of toys, tunnels, and hideouts to keep your guinea pigs mentally stimulated and happy.
Rotate their toys regularly to keep things interesting.

Companionship: Only house guinea pigs with members of their own species. Avoid housing them with rabbits, as
they have different nutritional needs and rabbits can pose a hazard to guinea pigs due to their size.

Fun Fact: Guinea pigs have many sounds that they can make to display various emotions, but one of these sounds is almost identical to a chittering bird call. It is not truly known why they do it, but it usually occurs at night on a very
rare occasion and is suspected to be a warning call that their ancestors would have made. They will appear in a trance state when the call is made.

🐹 Diet Tips for Guinea Pigs: Fresh vegetables are a must for your guinea pig’s daily diet!
Leafy greens like kale, spinach, and parsley are excellent choices.
Introduce new veggies gradually to avoid tummy troubles and give in moderation, as some have higher calcium content which can lead to urinary issues. 🥬🥕

Hay should make up about 80% of their diet, with nuggets and veggies each making up 10%. Avoid feeding iceberg lettuce and potatoes, as they can cause digestive problems. Always wash vegetables thoroughly to remove any pesticides or contaminants. Make sure you do your research before introducing new foods, there are lots of safe food lists available online.

Vitamin C is Vital: Unlike many animals, guinea pigs can’t produce their own vitamin C. Make sure to provide them with vitamin C-rich foods like bell peppers and oranges, or consider a vitamin C supplement. Fortified nuggets are
also a means to contribute vitamin C into your piggies’ diet. Avoid muesli diets as these can encourage selective feeding.

A lack of vitamin C can lead to scurvy, which causes symptoms like lethargy, swollen joints, and loss of appetite.
Regularly check with your vet to ensure your guinea pig’s diet meets their nutritional needs.

Fun Fact: Guinea pigs may only sleep for up to four hours per day!

It is Guinea Pig Awareness week hosted by Burgess!

Each day we will be posting some useful tips and information on guinea pig care.

🐹 Social Creatures: Guinea pigs are highly social animals and thrive in the company of their own kind. It’s best to keep them in pairs or small groups to ensure they stay happy and healthy. A lonely guinea pig is an unhappy guinea pig! 🐾

When introducing new guinea pigs to each other, do so gradually and in a neutral space to prevent territorial behavior. Watch for signs of bonding like grooming each other and sharing food. Signs that they need to be separated include biting, fighting, and teeth chattering.

Initially, you can try moving their cages near each other so they can smell and see each other without being in the same space. Swapping their toys and hideys is another way to introduce scents that may reduce the chances of territorial incidents.

Fun fact: Guinea pigs are related to Capybaras! They are both in the same family, and you can easily spot their similar behaviors and anatomical features.

Did you know…..

from 10 June 2024 it will be compulsory to have your cat microchipped and cat owners could be fined if they do not comply.

MICROCHIPPING FACTS...

A microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is placed under the skin by a suitably trained person (vet, animal charity or local authority).

Microchips contain a unique code that is registered on a national database. If he or she strays, this means they can be scanned with a reader and reunited with their owner if they are found. This is also helpful if an injured cat is bought in by member of the public and we need to contact the owner urgently.

They are permanent and will last the lifespan of your cat.
Cat microchips can also keep other cats out of your house if you have a microchip-activated cat flap, and restrict food access if you have a microchip food bowl.

Cat microchips can be implanted at any age, although many are done when they come in for neutering.

Microchips are INCLUDED as part of our Healthy Pet Club.

For more information on this scheme go here: https://www.thehealthypetclub.co.uk/
Book in now with a nurse for a free consult and implantation of a microchip if your cat does not have one!
