We use positive reward-base

d methods in our training sessions. We encourage clicker training as it is a very clear indicator to the puppy or dog that they have achieved the behaviours that we want. We work at the puppy's own speed. It's a behaviour-based training method. We use treats, toys and praise to reward the puppies and dogs. We only use kind and gentle methods and no force is ever used or will be allowed in any of our training classes. We don't allow the use of choke chains, slip leads, half choke collars, slip collars, or spray or shock collars in any of our classes or at our have-a-go events. I am proud to be a member of the Pet Professional Network as a kind, ethical and trusted trainer

Shared from another trainer as this is what we all MUST achieve with our puppies and dogs!

Socialisation Success
This is Marvin (one of Freya's puppies) learning about the world and relaxing into the environment in which he lives. He is chilled out and happy, he takes everything in his stride. Perfect!
But not everyone knows how to correctly socialise a puppy, in fact, most people don't...
So puppy is here, or our new rescue dog has arrived. We have to socialise and habituate right? Checklist of things to see and do, plan to succeed, book a class at the local community centre for socialisation, ready to go!
But first ask yourself, what is the end game?
Most people will say that the goal is to encourage their dog to be eager and happy to see people, dogs and other animals, to be excited about new adventures, places and things. To associate men in hats, beards, footballs, bikes, vacuum cleaners and everything else with treats and praise and fun.
NO. Stop right there!
We DON'T want this. Not at all.
Think about it...Do we want our puppy to mature into a dog that gets excited every time he sees a football? Even if it is on the opposite side of a busy road? Do we want out adult dog to run over to new people in the park and check their pockets for treats - whether invited or not? Do we really want our dog to be excited and bouncy when visitors arrive - even elderly people and toddlers given that he now weighs 45kg? How about dogs on leads? Is our greatest desire to own a dog that runs excitedly to approach dogs on sight - regardless of whether they are friendly, on a lead or muzzled?
Probably not...
It isn't enough to simply pair new things with great experiences, and exciting things. This creates a problem, one that can be far more worrying than that of a lack of exposure...
So what should we keep in mind?
We need to focus on an end game of CALM ACCEPTANCE.
A super-dog, a dog that is calm, relaxed and makes good decisions, listens to us and is polite in greeting and only when we allow it, a dog that asks for permission by sitting rather than barking, and gains approval through great behaviour and showing super self-control and focus on us. A non-reactive and accepting dog that is comfortable in the environment and with everything in it.
For this reason the plan when considering socialisation and habituation should take this into account.
Our job is to teach our dogs to be comfortable and accepting of the environment and everything in it, and to look to us for guidance when unsure. To ignore each and every potential trigger, to look but not escalate, to relax and experience but not with excitement or prey drive, to screen out dogs, people, rabbits, squirrels, footballs, postmen and everything else unless we initiate an interaction, to focus on us around potential triggers for excitement or anxiety, and only THEN receive rewards! Whether that reward is a food reward from us, or a smile, or permission to go and play with another dog, greet a person, or scavenge a dropped chip!
This way calm contentment becomes generalised, focus and concentration suppress reactive and instinctive behaviours, and we have the complete trust and control of our dog.
THIS is a well socialised dog - a dog that allows us to decide which dog to play with and which to pass by - and when to STOP playing. A dog that trusts us enough to relax as we regulate access to visitors, a dog that feels no responsibility to do anything when confronted by something new - except look at us for instruction, direction and feedback.
Maybe a community center full of excited puppies isn't necessarily the way to go after all... particularly if the plan involves leaving them to interact with high excitement whilst we sip a cup of tea...
So - top tips;
Have a game plan - what's the ultimate goal?
Find your inner role model - demonstrate by example
Go out and socialise in life, in the REAL WORLD
Work at the dog's own pace - start slow
Reward frequently for calm focus on you
Ask for eye contact frequently
Mark unwanted excitement straight away and redirect onto an exercise that provides a reward for calm concentration.
The fact is, that what we actually want is for our adult dogs to be just as happy and content not to interact, as they are interacting! Keep this in mind when showing your dog how to behave in the world, and what you expect for the future!

Happy 15th Birthday Paws 4 Training.

Paws 4 Training never would have existed had it not been for my special boy Harley.

He has enabled me to change my life and hopefully many lives of others who I have worked with.

Being self employed is tough, but it is worth it to be able to have the flexibility that many other jobs aren't able to offer.

I love working with puppies and adolescent dogs and seeing the magic when they get what we want them to do by problem solving.

I love working with my own dogs and learning new things. I love working with Bumble Bee who at almost 10 years of age is still very willing and very able to continue learning with me and Pumpkin who gives everything her all. They both help me to develop my skills which helps me in my work to be the best I can be.

I love that I now have a friend and mentor, someone to chew the fat over with to help me progress and develop my skills and to support me in all that I do. Thank you Tamasine Smith

You really can teach an old dog new tricks! I'm always learning!

Thank you to everyone who I have worked with in the past and those who I am still working with and I look forward to working with many new clients in the years to come.

Thank you to my amazing husband, Rob for supporting and helping me everyday xx

Here's to the next 15 years!

20/02/2024

After becoming the proud owner of a beautiful intelligent Jack Russell just over 2 years ago and having worked with many different types of small terriers over the years, we are now specialising in working with small terrier puppies.

A Terrier's training can often be overlooked and I have found from personal experience that the majority of people expect small terriers to be yappy reactive/aggressive dogs. They can be small dogs with a big attitude. They are very intelligent dogs and love to work.

They do have huge personalities but if you start things correctly right from the offset - even before you get your puppy a terrier doesn't have to be this way.

We can help you teach your terrier puppy to be calm and relaxed in the home and whilst you are out and about. Once we get the foundations in place we can keep progressing your dog's training further. Some of the activities we can offer as well as puppy and adolescent training include distance training, trick training, parkour, canine hoopers, scent training and agility training.

We can start working with you from when you first bring your terrier puppy home at 8 weeks of age.

Training is available in person and via video.

A client shared this post with me and thought it was definitely worth sharing on my page. I haven't used chemical tick/flea treatments or wormers for years.

I don't want these toxins on my dogs in my home or to expose my family to them.

The herbal products I give to my dogs work brilliantly.

Pet owners risk contaminating their hands with neurotoxins for at least 28 days after application, scientists find

We have a couple of spaces available this Saturday 20th January at 11am - 12 noon for our mind and body balance workshop.

This week we will be doing parkour and proprioception exercises.

Perfect for dogs to start thinking more about their bodies and how they can use them!

Suitable for all breeds and ages of puppies and dogs. This will all be low impact activities.

All welcome! You don’t have to have trained with us previously.

We keep our attendee numbers small to make it easier for the dogs to cope in a group environment and to ensure you all have some 1-2-1 training within the session.

You just need to wrap up warm and bring plenty of training treats for your dog.

Your dog will need to wear a Y-front harness for the session.

£15 per dog.

Our Story

Puppy Clicker Training Classes Clicker Obedience Classes Training Workshops Non-competitive Agility Made to measure harnesses, leads, collars and bespoke items Dog treat recipe book Other dog training accessories We only use kind and gentle methods to help you to train your puppies and dogs. We use clicker training in all of our classes as this is a very effective method of training. You will get excellent results due to the consistency of how clicker training works. Paws 4 Training was established in 2009 by Naomi Farrow. After getting her first dog Harley who came with a number of issues. Naomi realised that she wanted to help more dogs like Harley and to prevent the problems happening right from the start with other puppies and young dogs. Naomi started teaching agility just outside of Norwich and then quickly realised she wanted to do more. Paws 4 Training was established. Starting off with just a few classes a week including puppy training, basic obedience and agility in small village halls and a dusty indoor riding school. Naomi moved and set up her own training centre located 1 mile from Hempnall village, approximately 10 miles from Norwich. The training centre has a soft floor which is ideal for all dog training.

The classes have progressed over the years and we offer so much more. We are always looking for new things to offer our clients.

Our training workshops have proved popular. Some of these are internally run others we have external trainers come in to lead the sessions.

One of the popular workshops we offer is the Interactive Play Skills Workshop with Craig Ogilvie. Craig has starred on a BBC1 documentary helping people with their unruly dogs.
