Miscanthus is looking wild, and decidedly hollow around the middle, which suggests it has become a hiding place for a child šŸ˜‚

Itā€™s a good spot to hide, good choice.

I think in reality this plant is grown for Biomass?
Every year (in spring) I end up cutting down the culms, tying up the clump and leaving in the shedā€¦ one day Iā€™ll use them for something.

Donā€™t use them as kindling in the fireā€¦ they explode all over the place. šŸ˜…

Already thinking about how Iā€™ll change the garden for next year already, as there is lots I got not quite right this time round and want to improve things.

I never replaced the super tender plants that I lost last year, and grew very little from seed.

Benefit to that is I now have less tender plants overall to overwinter, which will change the way I over winter, hopefully allowing for a slightly cooler poly tunnel and therefore less cost in energy. Last year the electric bill was way too much!

This year I may make a smaller structure inside the poly for the remaining tender plants, then make a different plan for the semi tender plants that need to be a few degrees above 0c. Or not. Or just use the conservatory better. Hmmm.

Much to think about but very little brain capacity today!

How much are you overwintering?
Heated poly, heated greenhouse, garage?
Let me know what your plan is!

Thanks šŸ™

Feels like the last remaining sunshine of the year, and the plants are doing what they can to soak up as much as possible before the dull days approach.

Wind battered and tatty, but I still love the way it looks right now.

It suddenly feels somewhat Autumnal this morning, and twinned with the realisation that the nights are drawing in quicker than I expected mean Iā€™m already thinking Iā€™m behind schedule sorting things out for winter.

Iā€™m not (ish) but I do need to start making a planā€¦ last year I really was lax it it all, and need to do better this winter.

I just canā€™t face rewrapping the inside of the poly tunnel and sorting the state I left it in when I abandoned it in May!

Where are the flowers?
I get asked that a lot.

There are only a few things that flower in the garden, like the Hedychium (bottom left) - but mostly itā€™s just a big sea of various greens.

ā€œJust for the foliageā€ right?

Something like that.
I just like green.
It does something for my brain.

From top left clockwise:
Miscanthus, Musa basjoo, Dicksonia Antarctica, Woodwardia, Hedychium, tetrapanax

Hey! Sorry Iā€™ve barely been on the socials the last few weeks, my brain has been elsewhere and likes to hyperfocusā€¦ and constantly distracted. šŸ˜‚

The garden hasnā€™t had much love, other than just sitting outside appreciating it, which I guess is the point of creating gardens like this, so all good ā¤ļø

The view from upstairs over part of the garden is getting better every week. Itā€™s so nice be able to see so much green first thing in the morning!

Iā€™ve done nothing in the garden for a couple of weeks now, and there is so much stuff to sort out and w**d. Hopefully get some time this weekend.

How is your garden?
Planted anything new in the last few weeks?

Oooh I may have some Banana seeds to giveaway soon, hopefully someone will get to enjoy growing those from seed to something huge šŸ¤ž

The cardoons are cardoooning! Those massive purple flowers instantly attract the insects and bees from miles around, they literally glow.

Cardoons are such great value plants for the minimal cost.

Iā€™ll have literally hundreds of seeds soon which I should give away on here maybe!

Colocasia finally getting some size at the base of the Tetrapanax looming overhead, as well as a wind smashed baby Ensete banana on the right.

My memory is just good enough to remember when the plants all had intact, pre wind damaged leaves šŸ˜‚

How did your garden fare in the wind?!

Hats off to anyone with a walled garden with zero damage!

The Gunnera and Bamboo (Fargesia Robusta Campbell) has finally swallowed a significant proportion of the slack line, which is rendering half of it useless.

Iā€™m going to have to set a new post in the ground to tether it to somewhere else I think, itā€™ll be easier than moving the gunnera šŸ˜‚

Plants seem happy after the massive downpour yesterday evening, but I still need to get the fertiliser out (thanks for your suggestions yesterday!)

Bamboo Fargesia Robusta Campbell, Persicaria Red Dragon, and I can never remember the type of lilies, day lilies? Help me out here!

The agapanthus (just out of shot) has been mega slow this year, not sure why, maybe my heavy foot squished them at the wrong time šŸ˜”

We finally got a massive rainstorm, so no watering tonight - just mopping the (leaking) conservatory šŸ˜¬

Did you get rain?!

The Ensete (purple banana in foreground) really struggled over wintering this year, but itā€™s finally starting to make a move, although Iā€™m not sure what itā€™s problem was.

Iā€™ve found with ensete is that no matter how well you over winter them, sometimes they just donā€™t make it.

Iā€™ve lost a few over the years and itā€™s never the one you think itā€™ll be, itā€™ll be the most healthy, strongest one sometimes.

Oh well. At least itā€™ll take up less room in the poly tunnel this winter..

Do you grow Ensete? Have you ever lost one over winter?

Morning from an overcast and windy morning again, where did the sun go?

Things are looking a little yellow tinged in places so I think this weekend everything will get a good feed of general fertiliser, a couple of big tubs should give everything a boost, nothing has had anything so far this year šŸ˜¬

How often do you spread fertiliser around?

Morning! Tell me something you achieved at the weekend, gardening related or not!

I managed to get a load of w**ding done around the front garden, trimmed a hedge and not much else. Much excitement šŸ˜‚

I still have a few pots to get in the ground which Iā€™ll do next weekend at this rate!

Hidden underneath the canopy of the bananas and the tree ferns, marvelling at the speed of growth of the banana pups rocketing up. I love standing here, itā€™s one of the best little hiding spots.
