Before & after dinner: a selection of tonight’s socialites!
Happy National Black Cat Appreciation Day! 🐈⬛❤️
It’s a sad fact that black cats are less likely to be adopted from rescue centres over more brightly coloured felines, so today is designed to raise awareness of this fact and celebrate these beautiful, sleek creatures. The next time you see a black cat, be sure to give it some extra love and attention!
Here are just a few of the ones we look after…
Some gorgeous bellies & beans to end the week…have a lovely weekend!
Today really does mark the end of an era as we say a’ bientôt to Merlin & Maggie, the very last members of our ‘Costessey Posse’. Their lovely owners have been clients for almost 18 years, & their previous dog, Moffet, will hold the title of the most gifted of thieves for ever & a day. (We still have no idea how she managed to steal a fresh loaf of artisan bread from the back of the kitchen unit, particularly as she was well into her teens at the time!).
Today we decided to take all the dogs out to them in Costessey, & we had a lovely walk down Marriotts Way for a change. By chance, we have Olive (who lives in Sheffield now) staying with us for the weekend, so she came too. What surprised us is that she clearly remembered Merlin very well, & she stubournly refused to walk without him by her side - they used to play together as pups; it was a lovely way to conclude a very sad day.
Merlin & Maggie, it’s been a pleasure!
Today’s ‘Costessey Posse’: Bess, Bridie, Maggie, Merlin, Molly, Nala & Olive…
Olive’s back from Sheffield for the weekend & she’s all ours! We always love welcoming her back to her spiritual home…
Birthday shenanigans with Mabel 3 - she’s 3 today…
With Bess, Lilly, Mabel 3, Maple, Nala & Poppy. One for the girls!
We’ve just spent a lovely half hour with a gorgeous old gent called Abel. There’s not much of him these days, & he’s a bit unsteady on his pins, but what a lovely welcome!
With just shy of 300 cat visits booked in this month, this is a familiar sight at our place. Here’s Mark enjoying the 10m platform diving yesterday!
Just some of our more cooperative feline friends enjoying their evening visit: Abel, Benjamin, Cosima, Gustav & Oulton.
(Getting them all is an impossible task - this is the first time we’ve seen Gustav up close & personal in 3 years, so getting a dark & blurry photo is a miracle in itself. Kai, Polly, Shirley & Thruxton tomorrow, we hope…!).
We could have stayed there all day!
With Bentley, Bess, Bingo, Mabel, Millie 4 & Rosie 2
Mabel 3 has joined us for Day Care today & was very keen to get the party started this morning. (She didn’t get the memo - the others were all more than happy to take it easy in the shade!). Thankfully, she ran out of steam & the penny eventually dropped…
With Bess, Bingo, Chewie, Maple, Millie 3, Millie 4, Roxie & Waldo
Down by the river again this morning, with Bess, Bentley, Bingo, Chewie, Maple, Millie 4, Milly & Roxie. (Sticks & litter-picking courtesy of Bess…!).
This morning’s walk in a nutshell…
With Bentley, Bess, Bingo, Lilly, Louie, Maple, Poppy & Roxie
Apparently, one of this morning’s group doesn’t like getting wet. (Yes Charlie, we’re talking about you!).
That’s him in the second photo, & there’s only one conclusion we can reach: Charlie is a liar!
With Bentley, Bess, Charlie, Lilly, Maple, Millie 4 & Rosie 3.
This is gorgeous Gracie. We’ve known her for 13 of her 16 years, & she has a number of health problems often associated with older cats; her medication is a paste we squeeze on to her food twice a day to support her thyroid function.
Unfortunately, she’s had a rotten few days after she decided it was too hot to eat, so she missed out on her vital meds & became dangerously dehydrated because she wasn’t drinking anything, either - it’s terrifying just how fast she went downhill in the 12 hours between our visits. We promptly swung into action & tried desperately to contact her (unreachable) owner, & when that proved futile, we raked back through over 3,000 emails because we remembered his sister had contacted us once. Thankfully, we found her, & she was able to contact Stephen. To cut a very long story short, we managed to get Gracie into a basket - no easy task, let me tell you! - & to her vet, who put her straight on a drip. She stayed overnight, we liaised with the vet, Gracie’s owner & his sister multiple times, visited Gracie twice & were overjoyed to take her home after a dramatic & stressful 2 days. Her vet praised our quick thinking & swift action, as she probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer in the heat, particularly as she’s a real ‘outdoor’ girl who regularly goes to ground. She’s been very, very lucky. (When we picked her up to take her in, she was busy sunning herself on the patio at the hottest time of the day - not the wisest of choices…!).
She’s feeling - & looking - so much better than she was, but I suspect the 2 tins of tuna the vet gave her have helped as much as the medication has - not only does she have a full belly, her thyroid function is buoyant & under control again.
The moral to the story? Don’t delete any emails, & do a feline first aid course so you can recognise the signs; getting her to the vet this time definitely saved her life.
(Here she is getting over the shock of 2 trips in the van in as many days…bless her heart!).
We were starting to think we wouldn’t be needing our summer uniform this year, but the cool bandanas have been out every day this week & we’re so glad we have them. Doesn’t this morning’s group look smart?!
With Bess, Chewie, Hamish, Jude, Mabel, Maple, Millie 3, Rosie 2, Waldo & Winnie
Proving how brilliantly they can behave when 2 passers-by decided to do exactly that right behind us. Cool, calm & collected - gold stars for everyone!
You can’t beat a refreshing dip in the river before home time…
With Bingo, Hamish, Jude, Lilly, Mabel, Peggy, Poppy & Rosie 2
More cats? Why not?! Here we have Alan, Gracie & Tansy…
We do love welcoming new dogs to our pack, & when they’re happy to throw themselves straight in at the deep end, we know they’re going to thrive. Rosie 3 definitely ticked those boxes early on & has settled in brilliantly! Friends old & new…
With Bess, Chewie, Hamish, Mabel, Maple, Millie 3, Peggy, Rosie 2, Rosie 3, Roxie & Winnie
Happy Friday from these 3 beauties!
Making our way (very slowly!) back to the van this morning; these guys were in no rush…
With Bentley, Bess, Mabel, Maple, Peggy, Rosie 2, Roxie & Waldo
Our last group of the day instantly gravitated to the shade, & we can probably still count on one hand the number of times they’re wanted to do that all summer!
With Bess, Bingo, Chewie, Frankie 2, Kota, Lilly, Maple, Ozzie, Poppy & Waldo
We welcomed Rosie (3) to our ranks last week, & today she went off-lead for the first time. What a little firecracker! She played with everyone, took a real shine to Stanley & Bess, & got everyone moving this morning. She’s going to be a lot of fun!
With Bess, Chewie, Indie, Maple, Millie 3, Rosie 3, Stanley, Storm, Waldo & Winnie
In honour of Maple’s 6th birthday today, we thought we’d share some of our favourite photos. (There are far too many to choose from, such is her willingness to pose with her wonderfully expressive face, so here there all are!).
Happy Birthday to Maple! ###
3 of our more willing models this morning, all of them gorgeous!
Oulton, Shrimp & Thruxton…
Another lovely morning at the beach entertaining our Home Boarders. (Bess was seriously outnumbered & became an honorary member of the Cockapoo Club, & she definitely missed her BFF. Actually, we all missed her BFF - get well soon, Bentley!).
With Bess, Charlie, Frankie, Indie, Maple & Storm
Just some of the gorgeous faces we saw at breakfast this morning. (The cats in the first 2 photos look almost identical & are completely unrelated!).
Coco, Nancy, Oulton, Squeak, Thruxton & Tilly.

Yesterday we were bathed in glorious sunshine. Today, not so much… Thankfully, a bit of rain never seems to dampen their enthusiasm for water, & some of these guys couldn’t give a monkey’s his cold it is. (Note the more sensible ones among them still gave it a wide berth!). With Bess, Bingo, Frankie 2, Mabel, Maple, Rosie 2, Waldo & Winnie
Hello daylight, we’ve missed you! It’s nearly 5pm & we’ve finally been able to ditch the fluorescent tabards & head torches…! These guys will sleep well tonight. With Bess, Chewie, Frankie 2, Jude, Mabel, Maple, Rosie 2, Stanley & Waldo…
We don’t know where they get their energy from, but these guys were in no rush to head back to the van this afternoon! With Bingo, Bruno, Freddie, Indie, Jude, Lilly, Poppy, Storm & Waldo at Lion Wood…
Quietly content playing on the pitches: Winnie’s first taste of Day Care has been a roaring success! With Bess, Hamish, Lilly, Mabel, Millie 4, Rosie 2, Storm & Winnie
Winnie made herself another new friend this morning, & we know it’s a friendship that will just grow & grow. What a privilege it is to be in a position to facilitate them… With Bess, Hamish, Mabel, Millie 4, Rosie 2, Storm & Winnie (Cookie’s around too, busy foraging. I don’t know how I missed her!)
Off-lead shenanigans for Winnie & her new mates. (We’re a bit jealous of her Monday morning energy…we could definitely do with some of it!). With Bentley, Bess, Chewie, Huey, Roxie, Waldo & Winnie
Nala’s such a gentle, timid little thing, but Storm’s determined to bring her out of her shell. Today they had a proper game & we feel like proud parents!
Quietly content & reunited after the Christmas break. (They’d run themselves ragged by this point & we were heading back to the van, so ‘quietly content’ could also mean they were just knackered!). With Bentley, Bess, Hamish, Indie, Lilly, Mabel, Millie 4, Peggy, Rosie 2 & Storm
Our newest addition - 9-month-old Millie 4 - was a little overwhelmed initially, but she made the most of her trial walk this morning she has a new friend in Bentley; Hamish chatted to everyone from the minute we arrived to the minute we headed for home, & Roxie wasn’t at all sure what to make of Bruno. (Bruno loves everyone & everyone loves Bruno!). Millie’s going to fit in perfectly… With Bentley, Bruno, Chewie, Frankie 2, Hamish, Mac, Maple, Millie 4, Pete & Roxie
The first run for a while & these guts were fully loaded & ready to go… With Bess, Chewie, Frankie 2, Mabel, Maple, Milly, Peggy, Rosie 2 & Roxie
Fun & games on the rugby pitches… With Bentley, Bess, Chewie, Frankie 2, Hamish, Mabel, Maisie, Maple, Rosie 2 & Roxie. (3 balls, a couple of sticks & 2 walkers!).
The last group of the day. Arthur just wanted to get out of the rain, & the others would have stayed all night! With Arthur, Bentley, Bess, Frankie 2, Mabel, Maple, Rosie 2 & Waldo
In what’s rapidly becoming our favourite spot at Mousehold… With: Bentley, Bess, Hamish, Indie, Lilly, Mabel, Ozzie, Posy, Rosie 2 & Toby
