The life of Ny A glimpse into the life of Nyla the English Bull Terrier

26/10/2024

“But why a bull terrier?”

A question I’m asked so many times is why a bull terrier? Until you have one in your life you will simply never understand.

They have a personality like no other animal never mind any other dog. They have a purpose in life, it’s to make you smile while simultaneously driving you around the bend.

They are stubborn on a level you have never met before and if a bull terrier decides it’s not doing it you have to get used to the idea it’s simply not going to happen.

They are trainable but only for a short while, not because they are stupid but because they are incredibly clever. They learn that training involves treats so they drag it out as long as possible to keep getting treats, as soon as you withdraw the treats they withdraw the training.

They want to be close and no matter what size they become they are a lap dog, whether they fit on your lap or not.

Most think they are unusual looking animals, no other dog looks like a bull terrier but they can look so regal when sat upright then all of a sudden look like Eeyore and you try to figure out what’s wrong only to realise there is nothing wrong, it’s just the way they are.

Most of us who have them in our lives have many names, clown terrorists, toddlers in a dog suit and so many we can’t print when, not if, they get up to mischief. When a bull terrier is quiet it’s the time you need to go check up on them.

If you want an obedient, walk to heel, do tricks come on command get a collie, in fact get any other breed of dog and not a bull terrier.

Would I recommend one?

Oh yes, they come into your life to change that life and it’s for the better, you will look down at them as they sleep with their heads on your lap while stroking their velveteen ears and wonder how you managed to get through life for so long without one by your side. ❤️

Heartbroken 💔
I'm so sorry to announce that on Monday we had to make the worst decision to let our beautiful girl cross the rainbow bridge 🌈 she got extremely poorly over the weekend and despite another £3000 trying to save her she continued deteriorating. She was only 2 and a half!!
I'm still really struggling to talk about it and I'm running away for a week to try and distract myself from the overwhelming pain. But I promise when home I will make myself go through the millions of photos and share them with all of you who loved her so much too.
She was my baby girl and I loved her as if she was my child.
There's no more pain and suffering now baby. Run free over that bridge and enjoy eating all the socks.
I will love you forever 💜💜💜

Today I am grateful NOT to be working in clinic. No not to enjoy the sunshine, but to be away from the devastation that heatstroke still causes despite multiple warnings. I am grateful not to be battling to save lives, and witnessing unnecessary deaths of wonderful dogs who would have quite happily missed a walk today.

To all my veterinary colleagues, I just hope you do not have to see too many tragedies today. Sending lots of love and healing as it’s part of our job which should no longer be part of our job and has a huge negative mental impact.

KEEP THOSE DOGS IN THE COOL, AT HOME!

I'm just too cool 😎

Guess who's home!! It's been a very long 3 nights without her!! She was in such a grump with me but after some snuggles in bed she's a bit happier!
The vets now seem to think that she could have some gut mobility issues, she's had an infusion and some new meds to try and get it moving better 🤞 we might be finding some answers 💜

Sleep tight Jasper

Today I received the heartbreaking news that this beautiful soul has been given his forever sleep.

I wanted to tell you a little bit about Jasper and his amazing guardian ( with permission)

Jasper is a 2 year old working cocker who feared being touched and worried about people and dogs approaching but was busy all the time and often struggled to rest, nothing physically obvious stood out!!

His guardian had taken him to his orginal vets who Xrayed him (when a fab vet nurse pushed for it), the results came back and said he had mild arthritis but was fine and that was that!!

Time went on and Jasper continued to struggle with his behaviour and so his guardian reached out to me for help.

After the investigation stage I felt there was more going on physically with Japser which was causing, or minimally contributing, to his behaviour.

Despite already having xrays Jaspers human supported my decision to refer back again to the vets pushing for further investigation.

Jaspers human did EVERYTHING I asked of her, she fought tooth and nail to get my suggestions and recommendations implemented and never once did she waiver in her trust in me.

The journey was a Rollercoaster and sadly not a pleasant one, when you have to fight so hard to be heard its mentally exhausting and thats not even including the financial side of it, but she fought and fought, pushed hard, challenged, and made every choice based on what was best for this beautiful boy.

After decompressing him and finding professionals that worked with us as a team, the level of pain he was actaully in started to unravel.

Sadly his level of pain could not be managed by a cocktail of medications and he wasnt suitable for surgery and despite the amazing vets best efforts he was in too much pain.

I would like to say the vets were phenomenal in adapting how they reviewed Jasper to ensure minimal stress to him, and they looked after his physical and mental health at all times, I'm very grateful they gave Jaspers human trust and made her feel heard!!

I'm so proud of this lady, this is what it looks like to put your dog first even when you know it will break your heart 💔

Jasper you were loved beyond words and I hope your story shows that although we desperately wanted you to be here, it was right to challenge and push.

Despite initally having no obvious outward physical signs your behaviour and your human listening to you meant you didnt suffer 10 plus years of unheard pain.

Your human could not have fought any harder for you.

Sleep tight sweetheart 🖤
