Last month, we had the pleasure of hosting a fantastic evening dedicated to First Aid for Pets. This special event was led by emergency and critical care vet, Claire Willis who covered many topics including;
🔴Recognising ‘red flags’
🔴Administering effective first aid measures
🔴Safely handling injured animals
🔴Performing CPR on pets
Attendees had the opportunity to watch a live demonstration of CPR, and even have a go themselves, allowing them to learn hands-on techniques that could potentially save their pet's life in a critical situation.
Big thanks to Claire for her expertise and even bigger thanks to the generosity of our attendees, who together raised an incredible £650 for StreetVet Norwich, a cause very close to our hearts ❤️
Ruby-Anne is a 5-year-old Cockerpoo, who presented in October with a history of a 3-4 week hacking cough. Despite initial treatment with anti-inflammatories, Ruby’s symptoms remained. Her persistent cough, occurring several times a day, also affected her appetite.
Ruby was referred to vet Alex in our internal medicine team who carried out further investigations including a full blood profile and CT scan of her neck and thorax.
CT images showed a large mass in her left lung, samples of which were taken and sent to our external laboratory for testing. The team were concerned this could be a cancerous mass, or something less sinister such as an abscess or a foreign body reaction. Regardless of the cause, Ruby would require a Lung Lobectomy surgery to remove the mass.
This complex and intricate surgery was performed by vets Daniel and Luke, supported by a team of veterinary nurses to monitor Ruby’s anaesthetic and assist in theatre. The surgery involves making an approach to the affected lung lobe between the ribs. The blood vessels and bronchus supplying that lung lobe are isolated and sealed using a specialised stapling device. The lung is removed and the airways checked for any leaks. Thereafter, a chest drain is placed and the surgical site closed. The surgery was a success and Ruby recovered uneventfully under the watchful eye of the veterinary team. The chest drain was removed a few days later and Ruby was discharged home to her loving family.
The best news came when the laboratory confirmed the mass was benign, identified as an abscess, giving Ruby an excellent prognosis. Following a short course of antibiotics Ruby has made a fantastic recovery, her cough has completely gone much to the relief and delight of her owner, who said ‘we are so grateful to have her back to her happy lively self we can’t thank you enough’ 💙

Ivar is a 2-year-old Newfoundland who recently joined the Pet Health Club plus ➕
As a PHC➕ member Ivar gets unlimited consultations*
Ivar presented with itchy, sore ears and was seen by vet Henry who performed a full health check, including ear swabs for cytology. Cytology showed the presence of malassezia, a type of yeast found on the skin and ears. In most cases this causes no harm, however an abnormal overgrowth of malassezia can make the skin or ears red, inflamed and sore, such as in Ivar's case.
Ivar has been prescribed an antifungal treatment alongside steroids to help reduce the inflammation, and an ear cleaner to help keep the ear clean and combat bacterial and fungal overgrowth.
We will follow up with Ivar again in 2 weeks to check how he's doing and repeat the cytology ✅
As a PHC➕ member the consultation cost is all included giving his owners peace of mind he's covered for his visits 😌
*T&C's apply, specialist, referral or out-of-hours consultations are not included. Consultation fees associated with administering injections or chronic conditions are not included but discounted for PHC plus members.
This little Hoglet spent time being hand reared by our team after being found orphaned 🦔
They have now been transferred to a local wildlife centre for continued care, until they are able to be released next year.
Good luck little Hoglet 🤩
