Cats are very thorough about their hygiene and keeping their fur clean, so it’s not likely that they’ll need help with bathing! 😺

Exceptions would be if, for example, your cat gets their fur muddy while out and about, or if they have difficulties reaching certain areas of their body, which is common if they are overweight or into their golden years.

Excessive bathing can also lead to the loss of the skin and coat’s natural barrier functions and even cause local irritation, so don’t hesitate to talk to us if you don’t know whether to bathe your cat or not!

Cold and damp days are not the best conditions for joint pain, and this has a huge impact on for senior dogs with a lifetime of wear and tear! ❄️🐶

Chronic health conditions such as osteoarthritis are more common with age, and you might notice your golden oldie has a lot more stiffness in their movements these days, especially as they get out of bed in the morning or are out for walks.

Here are some ways to help:

🦴 Avoid going on long walks or engaging in rough playtime, as it might put undue strain on their joints and muscles.

🦴 Improve their resting time by ensuring their bed is as comfortable as possible and away from cold drafts.

🦴 If you notice your furry friend is struggling, don’t hesitate to contact us, as there’s a lot we can do to ensure your golden oldie is pain free.

Unfortunately, cats are often prone to urinary problems, one of which is feline idiopathic cystitis. Idiopathic means that this condition has no identifiable cause, but we find it more common in young to middle-aged cats. 🐈

Medical treatment can help reduce the frequency and improve clinical signs, thus relieving your cat's discomfort.

But the main thing to be aware of is changes in the environment that may trigger clinical signs in your cat, leading to this condition becoming recurrent. Environmental enrichment is key for these animals, and this can include:
👉 Keeping a regular daily schedule for feeding, playing and affection
👉 Making any changes to your cat’s routine slowly over time
👉 Adding scratching posts and toys
👉 Reducing competition in multiple cat households by having one more litter tray than the number of cats, plenty of resting places, and individual access to food and water for each cat

Get in touch with us if you spot these signs in your cat, as a thorough investigation is needed!

If you have a home with more than one cat, first of all congratulations on being so lucky! 😻 😻Secondly, don’t forget to always keep an extra litterbox available to avoid conflicts between your feline friends.

Cats are prone to urinary problems when they are stressed and having too few litter boxes can be a sticking point between your pets. An extra box can solve this problem and save you and your cats loads of problems!

How do you manage this? Let us know in the comments below.

Is there more to pet clothing than a fashion choice? 🤔

The answer is yes! There are items of clothing and accessories that your pet can wear to serve an important purpose, such as:

🐾 Post-surgical body suits to keep sutures out of reach

🐾 Snow booties to provide traction and protection

🐾 Reflective vests to enhance your pet’s visibility in the dark

🐾 Fleece jackets to keep them warm during cold weather

Does your pet wear any of these? Show us in the comments!

Did you know that coughing is a protective response that helps keep the airway clear? 🤔

That’s why dogs, like humans, cough if they accidentally choke on something they’ve eaten, and many respiratory infections can also lead to coughing due to airway inflammation.

But, sometimes, coughing can mean there is a problem in a different organ – the heart! 🫀

If your dog has a heart problem, their blood isn’t circulating well, which causes the blood vessels to leak. This fluid often builds up in the lungs, which can happen over time or very quickly, resulting in breathing difficulties and coughing.

As there are so many causes that can lead to coughing, it’s important to bring your dog to the practice so we can investigate. 🔎

Did you know that X-rays are an essential diagnostic tool for us?

They allow us to see the inside of your pet’s body in 2 dimensional images, to detect disease and evaluate internal organs and structures. X-rays are useful in a number of situations, including:

🩻 Trauma, such as high-rise falls or being run over by a car

🩻 Tumour/cancer

🩻 Ingestion of foreign objects, such as coins, toys and other random items

🩻 Orthopaedic problems, such as bone fractures, hip dysplasia, and arthritis

🩻 Problems in the thorax, such as heart disease, pneumonia and asthma

🩻 Problems in the abdomen, such as gastric torsion and bladder stones

🩻 Dental disease

🩻 Pregnancy diagnosis

🩻 And much, much more!

As you can see, X-rays can provide us with a lot of information to properly diagnose your pet and treat them.

However, in certain instances, more advanced imaging techniques, such as ultrasound, echocardiography (to examine the heart), a CT scan or even an MRI scan might be needed for further investigation.

January is Walk Your Dog Month!

Walking your dog may seem like a chore, especially during the cold and dreary days of winter, but we cannot overstate the health benefits of regular exercise for your pets and you. 🧑 🐶

From providing both physical and mental enrichment for our pets, to getting us out of the house more, taking the time to walk our dogs is also a great opportunity to strengthen your bond.

This month, we encourage you to get into the habit of walking your pets and then try to keep it up throughout the year! Do you accept the challenge? 🤔

Different kinds of seizures can lead to different signs, but if your pet is having a seizure, they might:

🧠 Have trouble walking and become unsteady

🧠 Collapse and fall to the ground

🧠 Foam from the mouth and drool

🧠 Lose consciousness

🧠 Urinate or defecate because they lose control of body functions

🧠 Shake, twitch and kick their legs

We know this is a stressful situation, but try to remain as calm as possible, make sure there’s nothing around them where they can hurt themselves, film the episode if you can, and get in touch with us.

If your pet has a seizure that lasts longer than a few minutes, or has several seizures in a row, this is an emergency and you need to bring them in right away! 🚑

Pet allergy happens because of proteins that can be found in many places like saliva, the skin and even urine.

This means that, even if a pet has little or no hair, they will still produce the proteins that cause an allergic reaction in susceptible humans!

Knowing your pet’s normal vital signs like heart rate can be essential, not only in an emergency situation but also if you need to keep an eye on their heart rate during problems like kidney, respiratory or heart disease. 🫀

This is very easy to do! Find their heartbeat (best on the left side, just behind the arm) and count 15 seconds of beats then multiply this number by 4. As you start doing this, you’ll be able to get a good baseline and be able to identify any changes faster.

In case you spot anything concerning with your pet, don’t hesitate to talk to us!
