BIRD FLU ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿ“๐Ÿฆข๐Ÿฆƒ

Avian influenza (bird flu) is a notifiable animal disease. If you suspect any type of avian influenza in poultry or captive birds you must report it immediately by calling the Defra Rural Services Helpline on: 03000 200 301.
Failure to do so is an offence.

Reporting dead wild birds
You should call the Defra helpline (03459 33 55 77) if you find:
one or more dead bird of prey or owl
3 or more dead gulls or wild waterfowl
(swans, geese and ducks)
5 or more dead birds of any species

Do not touch or pick up any dead or visibly sick birds that you find. For further information see our advice to the public.

There suddenly seem to be a lot of juicy, big acorns around. Acorn poisoning can commonly affect sheep, cattle, horses and goats. It seems that some individuals can develop a taste for acorns and gorge on them so not all animals in a group may be affected in the same way.
Prevention is by far the best strategy so try to keep stock away from areas with acorns and ensure they have enough alternative forage available.

This little calf had an injury and a nasty cut down to bone. There's not much tissue in this area so healing can be tricky but it did very well in the end.
The wound was as cleaned, clipped and lavaged. Then some debridement at the edges to make fresh tissue. Stitched up and bandaged for 3 days. The pictures are day 0 and 6 days after stitch up

Dr Christos Kartsalkas MRCVS, one of our farm animal vets, paid a visit to the Equine Clinic last week. He had been out on a farm attending to a lovely Red Poll calf with a suspected leg fracture.

Christos decided that further diagnostics were required to see exactly what damage had occurred to the calfโ€™s joint and decide on the best course of treatment. With the assistance of Elly and Jess from the equine nurse team, an Xray was taken and a splint applied to the calfโ€™s leg.

The calf is doing well so far and with further treatment and rechecks should make a good recovery.
