🦔 FOUND A HEDGEHOG AND DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO? 🦔
❗️IF IM DOUBT AND THE HEDGEHOG HAS VISIBLE INJURIES, PLEASE TAKE THEM STRAIGHT TO A VET FOR TREATMENT ❗️
If you see a hog out in daylight (7am-7pm), stand back a decent distance and watch for a couple of mins to see what’s happen -
* Females who are caring for young can come out in the daytime to find water, food and fresh bedding. She will be actively moving through the area doing her jobs. She should be fine to be left alone.
* However, if a hog is laying down in the open, being pestering by flies or obviously injured animal they should be helped asap. Scoop it up in whatever you have available as if you walk away it may not be there when u return!
* Once you have secured the hog contact a rescue, vet or someone with hog experience they will support you and your rescued friend!
* Young hoglets are left to their own devices and their mother will go off to rear her next litter! These small hogs could just be hungry / thirsty. If it looks well and is able to eat properly; feed it soft cat/dog food, give water and watch to see what’s it’s doing.
* If there is any flies on it or following it pick hoglet up! Flies lay eggs on any hog out in the day and this is one of the biggest killers of hog in the UK!
* While you are getting a hog to rescue, it needs a tall container with ventilation, away from flies, inside a medium temperature building.
* Offer a jam jar lid of water and ensure it has something dry to curl up in! Towel, clothing or ripped up newspaper is ideal! Covering the top of the box with help to keep flies out!
