If you are travelling to southern Europe with your dog, it is important to be aware of Leishmania:

🤔What is Leishmania? Leishmania is a parasite carried by biting insects called sand fly. When a sand fly bites an animal, it can pass on the parasite which then causes a disease called Leishmaniasis. Dogs are most commonly infected, but it can also affect other animals including cats and humans

🤒What are the symptoms of Leishmaniasis? Many dogs have no symptoms for months or years after they become infected. When they become ill, they often develop skin lesions, weight loss and lethargy. Leishmaniasis can also result in kidney failure

💊Can Leishmaniasis be treated? Leishmaniasis is difficult to cure and infection is usually lifelong but the symptoms can be managed with medication

🦟How can I protect my dog from Leishmania? To protect your dog from sand fly bites and therefore Leishmania, a repellent product must be used. It is important to be aware that flea and tick tablets do not stop dogs becoming infected as they do not repel sand fly. Effective repellent products include collars and spot ons; please speak to your vet for more information

💉What about vaccination? Leishmania vaccines are available but they do not prevent infection; they work by reducing the symptoms of the disease if a dog becomes infected. The vaccines are around 70% effective and take 3-4 weeks to work

💭What else can I do? Sand flies are most active at dusk – so avoid taking your dog out at this time and keep your dog indoors at night. Despite the name, sand fly are not just found in sandy areas and can live in parks and gardens
