🐾 **DID YOU SEE?** 🐾
Pet abduction will become a criminal offence in England and Northern Ireland starting this August after legislation received Royal Assent.
Under the **Pet Abduction Act 2024**, sponsored by Anna Firth MP and Lord Black of Brentwood and supported by the government, anyone found guilty of stealing a pet will face up to five years in prison, a fine, or both. This new law acknowledges that cats and dogs are not just objects but sentient beings capable of experiencing distress and trauma when stolen from their owners.
Evidence from the Pet Theft Taskforce highlights the severity of the issue, with around 2,000 dog thefts and more than 400 cat thefts reported to police in 2020, causing immense distress for both pets and their owners.
