1st January. The day when all horses ponies age a year. Caroworth Hamper, AKA Smarty Pants, is now 30 years old!

Bought when Molly was still 5, we have owned him for 18 years, and knew him in his previous home of three years. He has taught the ropes of the working hunter pony world to numerous small girls since being (vaguely) outgrown by Molly. When he was Shannon’s pony he was also ridden by numerous riding school and livery children, and a number of children have attempted and cleared absolutely magoosive “higher and higher jumps” at TV camps and competitions, Molly included.

He is a true legend. Only a fortnight ago he went off to dressage rally at the SNPC. No sign of slowing down although he doesn’t have the stamina he once had. Fingers crossed for more outings this year.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is one of five charities that will be attending an in-person meeting with the Minister for Business and Trade in February to discuss the issue of fireworks. One of the big challenges around the topic is lack of data, so they have today launched their Horses and Fireworks survey.

The aim is to generate a robust set of data and valuable findings in terms of how fireworks (both public and private displays) impact equine, and those that keep them.

If you are over 16, live in the UK and care for at least one horse, pony, donkey or mule, Redwings would love to hear your thoughts and experiences about the impact of fireworks on equines.

🌨️ Happy Snow Day everyone! ☃️

Snow balling up in the ponies feet was a problem today but between staff and horse owners they’ve all had a wander round the yard, lunge pen, field or a hand walk and graze.

I’ve got a few ponies living out and they’ve had hay and feeds in their field.

We are prepared for the cold weather. Snow removed from the yard. Buckets and troughs and containers full. Small radiator at the ready for keeping water pipes warm.

PCSO Smith: Road safety is massively important for so many obvious reasons. Todays plea is to ask all horse riders to please wear some form of high visibility clothing both on and off road whilst hacking. Whilst on the road it makes you more visible to road users and gives that extra few seconds for drivers to react. As a driver you should Slow down, be patient, not rev or sound your horn, and pass wide and slow when safe to do so. If out riding off road it is just as important, if an accident was to happen and you needed medical attention, that one piece of high vis could save you or your horse by allowing you to be found quicker.

I’ve looked on so many websites recently I have got myself completely in a knot! Where can I go to this Saturday morning, or Sunday afternoon, to jump a course of jumps under 80cm. Preferably a competition rather than an arena hire.

Failing that, a competition on the 30th November.

It’s all about the clipping this week!

Lottie has had her jaw, bib and belly clipped. I am trying to keep her out in the field as long as possible so took off very little. May have to revisit this plan. So easy to clip. I might even teach the small girls how to clip her.

Princess Sparkles had a little more off - I brought it across her shoulder to make a low chaser-cum-bib clip - but she was still a bit warm after work. I may just remove her whole neck. I don’t know what it’s called but I call it a “showing clip”.

Lilly is having a full-hunter clip hybrid.

Molly has already done George. He’s an Angel to clip. Best behaved Exmoor. On the other hand, Rus needs a clip but I’m not sure I can deal with the challenge. I’m definitely not doing Finn.

On the nights we were most worried about fireworks we’ve kept the horses in. I’d much rather we can easily see what they’re doing than risk them running through fencing.

Some years we have fetched them all in for winter by now but with the mild weather most of the paths and gateway are holding up so around a third are still living out.

I am really noticing the lack of evening daylight for riding. For my girls, and others who go to school and work in the day, weekday riding isn’t going to be quite as much fun now that it’s too dark to go in the fields. The arena it will have to be in the week. Thankful we have lots of poles and equipment to keep things varied.

Some of the minis went out for an arena hire today. We had a really pleasing training session.

After some initial tension Dylan buckled down to work and was possibly the most relaxed he’s been jumping away from home. Then he dropped down to his job of tiny tots pony and pootled round with his little rider.

Luna was brave and jumped Sparkles over everything we suggested with no nervous wobbles. Their first time together jumping in a big arena and they aced it.

Pippa and Lottie jumped everything so nicely. She really does have a heart of gold that pony.

Back on the yard we have had a bit of a shuffle around of routines so that they could all be in tonight.

Aannndddd (*drumroll*) today we introduced three young chickens to our little flock. Bluey, Bingo and Amber.

Our Story

Forge Stables is set in 13 acres of land with spectacular views of the Nottinghamshire country side. Depending on size we can accommodate up to 15. Chi Stables is a smaller set up with indoor Monarch stables, and caters for just five horses. It is a family run business and we have over forty years experience of horse ownership and have studied for BHS qualifiations. John is a registred farrier and Debbie has an BSc (Hons) in Equine Science. We both compete(d) at national level and support out daughter to do the same. We only use freelance and staff who we are happy to look after our own horses, therefore your horse will receive the very best care.

Livery options are retirement, full, part and assisted, with restrictions on numbers to ensure we can give each horse the very best care. We are a quiet, friendly yard aiming to have happy horses with happy owners. We have a yard worming programme which includes use of feacal egg counts in order to avoid unnecessary use of chemicals, coordinate shared visits for the vet, dentist, physio etc. and also run clinics onsite. You are also very welcome to book your own equine professionals (instructor, vet etc) as well. We offer all year turn out, a secure tack room, and a lit sand school. The fields can be ridden and jumped in when the weather is good and there is access to fabulous hacking including routes along the river and down the Southwell trail. We have a short grass track on site and also a lunge/turn out pen so there are lots of options to ensure your horse has plenty of exercise. Bedding, hay and haylage provided. Regular feed and supplement deliveries. The local tack and feed store can meet all other shopping needs and is just a wheelbarrow journey away. There is hard standing for trailer and lorry parking. There is a toilet onsite, tea and coffee making facilities and we are situated close to a bus route. For your horse’s confort we now have a solarium which is a fabulous tool for warming up and down pre and post exercise and also drying off after a bath.
