Set in over 17 acres of land with spectacular views of the Nottinghamshire country side, we are a quiet and friendly yard. We are professionally run, fully insured, and our aim is to have happy horses with happy owners. John is a registred farrier who formerly competed in BS. He has a lifetime of experience of horse ownership, as well as BHS qualifications. Debbie, a former Safety Manager, has an

BSc (Hons) in Equine Science. She competes her native ponies in WHP classes, as well as producing ponies for their children to ride and compete. Eldest daughter Molly is now part of the team and helps out with backing and schooling. The day to day yard work is carried out by Paris and Tracey. They both have relevant equestrian qualifications and have many years experience.

It’s the British Show Pony Society summer champs next week.

Luna needs to rebuild her confidence after being overcome by nerves last week. Rus hasn’t jumped a course since 🤷🏻‍♀️😬 and I have barely ridden Finn since his trip to The All England Jumping Course, Hickstead soooooo… A good harrow followed by about two hours course building in the rain.

Available to hire, £15. Or two horses for £20. Please don’t let my efforts be in vain 😂

The photo of the bullfinch used on a recent horse and hound article seemed to cause a bit of upset.

Here’s a photo of Finn (Moonpenny Delphinus) at the RIHS last year. Because we have practiced at home he knows perfectly well that he can make his own 12 hand sized hole. The worker ponies know to brush through it.

There is a very similar photo this year but we both have our eyes shut.

I see a lot of posts written about the b!tch!ng associated in equestrianism, the faceyness (it’s not even a real word!) of showing, the bent judging, the being talked about behinds peoples backs.

So let’s just think about being a little more and actually enjoying our ponies and our shared interest and love of the sport. We can choose to make friends rather than make enemies. As my husband says to be “choose your attitude”.

Sometimes we need to take a long deep look at ourselves. Do I feel genuinely happy when I see fellow showing friends do well even if they beta me that day? Do I feel their disappointment when things go wrong? Can I cheer from the back line deeply unhappy with my own performance that day but when a pony I love but is ridden and owned by somebody else does well? I know I can. If you can’t then maybe you need to have a long deep look within about why you aren’t happy in your sport.

We have all experienced a day where it seems to be apparent that a judge wanted a certain person to win. But it says more about the judge than it does of our (lack of) success that day. And it’s not the riders fault if they appeared to be more favoured.

If we pay our memberships and entry fees then we are asking for an opinion and we really have to accept that opinion once given. Or we can raise concerns with the right bodies in the right way.

I have had what felt like 11 months at Hickstead in mostly glorious sunshine. We have eaten well. Drunk a little 🥂 I have seen some of the BEST ponies and horses in the country ridden by some extremely hardworking professionals and amateurs. My pony was an absolute mega star. And I still thank my lucky stars that he is mine.

In addition my small girls were given the most wonderful opportunity to jump a pony belonging to their showing buddy around the mini showjumping. The ladies running this were delightful. The jumping was just meters away from the Derby bank (see the first photo) and my girls won some coveted Hickstead rosettes.

Possibly an act of kindness I’ll never be able to repay but I hope that I can pass on the love in the same way one day. I do believe that what goes around comes around.

What better way to celebrate a win and a hoys ticket than a flat out gallop in the championship?!

Well done to Poppy and Lilly for their workers win today 🏆

When you are forever spending hand earned money on more jumps, and fillers, and your liveries are good at scavenging goodies for dressing the course. Not to mention how long it takes to build one 😅 A photo like this makes it all worth it.

Despite winning pretty pastel rosettes today I failed to take a photo. But I thought this trio of friends was a good one for today. Rus, my Golden Boy (Moonpenny Aquarius: Frithesden Phoenix x Lilac) won me my first ever HOYS qualifier class rosettes with a 9th in the HOYS DES this morning, and then a 7th in 133cm HOYS M&M WHP in the afternoon. Sadly had a pole in the workers, I let him go a little quick. But he simply ate up those big jumps.
Lovely to have some friends join me today for course walking and grooming. Thanks to Molly and Abbie who kept the show on the road at home. You girls ROCK!

The working hunter pony community will miss Mike very much.

Such a welcome sight when you had a few nerves as you knew he would crack a joke, try put you at ease or simply demand a smile. Always friendly. Always ready for a chat. But always doing his “job” of ushering you into the ring to keep things moving.

It has been moving to see the “no smile, no entry” tributes that have been put outside the whp ring at a number of shows. My heart goes out to his family who are dealing with their sudden loss. I’m sure this season will be a particularly difficult one for them. The loss is always felt but the pain of it will fade.

To help safeguard the access to hoof care and farriery in the UK, The British Horse Society (BHS) is running a survey to find out about access and availability of farrier and hoof care professionals.

As a vital part of equine routine care, the BHS would like to know about your routine hoof care and your experiences when accessing farriery and hoof care provider services for equids under your care over the previous year.

Please help them by completing the short survey, available on the full article here: https://www.yardownerhub.co.uk/article/british-horse-society-launches-hoof-care-access-survey/

What’s your preferred method for introducing new horses?

NB there’s no right or wrong so if you disagree with somebody else, that’s ok, but please discuss nicely.

It’s very topical as we had a new livery arrive this weekend. We are now full and taking names onto the waiting list for assisted, part, full and schooling livery.

Due to environmental issues, coupled with equipment supply problems, the following feeds with batch dates in April may take longer to soak.

Feeds: Fast Fibre, Veteran Light & Care & Gain

Rest assured, the formulas are unchanged and provide the same excellent nutrition, therefore the feed can be fed as long as all pellets are thoroughly soaked.

please soak until all pellets are fully dissolved and a mash is formed, we suggest making your evening feed in the morning and vice versa.

07/06/2024

𝖴𝖯𝖣𝖠𝖳𝖤 – 𝖬𝖠𝖸 20𝗍𝗁

Unfortunately, we are still experiencing soak time issues with the following feeds, therefore May to date could also be affected:

Fast Fibre, Care & Gain, Veteran Light, Veteran Vitality

Please therefore soak the feed until all pellets are fully dissolved.

Thank you.

Molly Barker and Moonpenny Cassini Qualified at NPS Area 12 for The NPS / NAF M&M 133cms Working Hunter Pony Championship RIHS 2024.
This is Molly’s first ever ticket and she’s done all the work herself. “George” claims the title of being the just the third ever Exmoor pony to qualify in the 133cm section, the first being Gaoth and the second being Moonpenny Aquarius who is half brother to Moonpenny Cassini.

Today we had Nicola from Meynell Bespoke Saddles visit the yard to fit new saddles, check saddles, adjust saddles, and fit for new bridles. I’ve lost count of how many she viewed.

Unfortunately George (Moonpenny Cassini) was unavailable for his appointment. But he hopes this red rosette from NPS Area 12 is a good enough excuse.

Moonpenny Cassini
Frithesden Alberti Bass ex Lilac which makes him half brother to Rus (Moonpenny Aquarius, Frithesden Phoenix ex Lilac) and therefore a half-uncle to Moonpenny Delphinus (Moonpenny Aquarius ex Frithesden Poppy)

Giving your horse access to the stable during the day in the summer helps manage their grass intake, exposure to heat, insects, and other environmental factors, promoting their overall well-being and comfort. We would love to see some pics of your horses having a snooze! 😴

Our Story

Forge Stables is set in 13 acres of land with spectacular views of the Nottinghamshire country side. Depending on size we can accommodate up to 15. Chi Stables is a smaller set up with indoor Monarch stables, and caters for just five horses. It is a family run business and we have over forty years experience of horse ownership and have studied for BHS qualifiations. John is a registred farrier and Debbie has an BSc (Hons) in Equine Science. We both compete(d) at national level and support out daughter to do the same. We only use freelance and staff who we are happy to look after our own horses, therefore your horse will receive the very best care.

Livery options are retirement, full, part and assisted, with restrictions on numbers to ensure we can give each horse the very best care. We are a quiet, friendly yard aiming to have happy horses with happy owners. We have a yard worming programme which includes use of feacal egg counts in order to avoid unnecessary use of chemicals, coordinate shared visits for the vet, dentist, physio etc. and also run clinics onsite. You are also very welcome to book your own equine professionals (instructor, vet etc) as well. We offer all year turn out, a secure tack room, and a lit sand school. The fields can be ridden and jumped in when the weather is good and there is access to fabulous hacking including routes along the river and down the Southwell trail. We have a short grass track on site and also a lunge/turn out pen so there are lots of options to ensure your horse has plenty of exercise. Bedding, hay and haylage provided. Regular feed and supplement deliveries. The local tack and feed store can meet all other shopping needs and is just a wheelbarrow journey away. There is hard standing for trailer and lorry parking. There is a toilet onsite, tea and coffee making facilities and we are situated close to a bus route. For your horse’s confort we now have a solarium which is a fabulous tool for warming up and down pre and post exercise and also drying off after a bath.
