During the winter months when the water temperature is below 10 °C, your fishes metabolism slows down, and they require less food. Here’s a simple guideline to follow:

1. Wheatgerm is an excellent choice for cold water fish as it is easily digestible and provides essential nutrients without overloading their systems.

2. Offer a small amount of wheatgerm food that your fish can consume within a short period. A good rule of thumb is to provide only what they can eat in about 5 minutes.

3. Feed your fish during the day when they are most active. Monitor their behavior to ensure they are interested in the food.

4. After 20 minutes, check for any uneaten food. It’s crucial to net out any leftover wheatgerm to prevent water quality issues and maintain a clean environment for your fish.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your fish remain healthy and happy during the colder months.

Winter care for your self-contained water features.

Our experts advice that you drain your self-contained water features and keep them dry by covering them, or moving them to storage, until the risk of ice has passed. This is because ice in very shallow water may damage the paint work, or crack the feature.

Blagdon Water Gardening Affinity Ice Vent Pond Heater is a low energy consumption pond heater which allows your pool to "breathe" during the coldest weather. Running at 50 watts, this convection design heater requires minimal energy to function and it’s fantastic for ponds up to 5000 litres.
