Nottingham Pet Crematorium came to the aid of a Mansfield woman left heartbroken after her pet dog died in her arms due to injuries from a brutal attack by an unmuzzled XL Bully-type dog.

Rita Harbury-Carlisle, owner of the West Bridgford based crematorium, offered to look after the beloved pet free of charge after reading about an appeal for help with cremation costs.

Angie Macis and her daughter Becky's beloved eight year old dog Cookie was attacked in Oak Tree, Mansfield on Thursday January 16 by an unmuzzled XL bully-type dog. Cookie passed away in Angie’s arms from injuries sustained during the attack

Angie said: “I am traumatised. Every time I close my eyes, I can see Cookie being ripped apart. I tried to drag Cookie by her lead but her harness slipped off. She just died so quickly. I ran into my flat and got her a towel. But it was too late.”

Despite the distressing ordeal, Angie is relieved that a child was not killed by the dog, as there were a number in the area at the time.

While trying to rescue Cookie from the attack, Angie was also bitten and had a precautionary tetanus job and antibiotics.

Cookie was collected from Mansfield by Nottingham Pet Crematorium and given an individual cremation. Angie collected the ashes in a traditional casket along with a clipping of hair and paw prints yesterday.

Rita Harbury-Carlisle said: “I saw the awful news on social media and as dog lovers ourselves we decided to offer to help Angie. She has had such a traumatic experience we hope we have eased her pain in some way”.

Angie added: “Becky and I can’t thank Nottingham Pet Crematorium enough. They saw the appeal for help with cremation costs and offered to look after everything for me completely out of the blue. They have done an absolutely lovely job looking after Cookie and offered me such amazing support at this terrible time. It's such a lovely place and atmosphere at the crematorium. Everyone has been so kind.”

We would like to offer our condolences to Queen Camilla following the loss of her 'much loved companion' Beth.

The Jack Russell was rescued from Battersea Dogs & Cats home in 2011.

The Queen had previously described Beth as: 'a colourful character. Adding she could not image her life, home or sofas without her'.

We received this amazing review:

"I could not have had a better service from Antara when my gorgeous Mr Woo ran over the rainbow bridge. From the first call I received the most incredible service.

It’s so important to me to have my pet cremated individually and these guys guarantee this. I have learnt that the vets are part of large organisations that expect their vets to use their own cremation services. This means your pet being kept in a bag until collection with many other pets, taken miles away and then being delivered back to you. There are no guarantees that it is only your pets ashes that you get back.

Rita John and Simon don’t offer anything other than individual cremation.

I arranged for them to collect Mr Woo the morning after he went to sleep. I arranged to see him at their premises, it was beautifully done. He was placed in a casket with flowers surrounding him, music was playing and a cup of tea bought to me. I spent 30 minutes with him. Simon gave me a huge hug and told me that he would be cremated straight away and that I could collect him the following morning.

When I went to collect him , he was ready for me, a bit of his fur, paw prints with a sign with his name on and candle burning. There was a tree where I could write a note in a red heart and place it in the tree. I chose to take it with me and return it at a later date. Rita was fabulous and gave me a hug as I was upset.

I went back last week to give them the heart to hang on the tree. Rita, John and Simon were all there and we had a lovely chat and more hugs.

Losing a beloved pet is heartbreaking, but having the guys at Antara to take care of his final journey made it so much easier. The care, the dignity, the love shown was priceless. I can’t thank you enough and recommend their services to anyone when they have to face this sad time. You’re the best".

Thank you so much for your kind comments.

River Trent Tragedy

You may have read about the recent tragic events in the River Trent near the Embankment Suspension Bridge. Blu, a pocket bully, unfortunately jumped into the water and was immediately washed under near the bridge on March 4th.

Despite the courageous efforts of his owner’s sons, Dylan & Kayden, the dog was missing in the fast flowing River Trent. Dylan jumped in to try to save Blu and he had to be pulled out by his hood by his brother Kayden.

Owner Theresa Smyth and her family had been taking a walk along the embankment with their 18 month old pet and stopped at the steps near the bridge. Blu has always loved water and was used to running into the sea on their trips to the coast. Theresa thinks he saw a reflection or thought it was a step when he walked into the river and was immediately swept away.

Over the next hours and days, numerous searches of the area took place. Notts Lost Dogs SAR led the search which included using a specialist drone alongside an underwater team using sonar from Lancashire based Beneath the Surface.

Kim Jefcott who runs the team of volunteers at Notts Lost Dogs SAR explained: “Following such a tragic accident we took control and organised the search because we have the expertise and experience to manage such a difficult situation. Unfortunately, this time we didn’t get the outcome we desired but at least we were able to re-unite Blu with his family. It was heart-breaking for everyone involved”.

The dive team from Beneath the Surface found Blu on Saturday 23rd March but could not recover him due to the water conditions. The next day the River Trent was calmer and within half an hour they had Blu out the water and on the way home to Theresa.

As soon as we became aware of this tragic accident we offered to look after Blu free of charge. Blu arrived at Nottingham Pet Crematorium with his owner Theresa and we provided an appropriate send off for this wonderful pet.

We laid him to rest in our farewell room and the family we able to spend private time with him and say their goodbyes. We provided paw prints and returned Blu’s ashes in a large gold frame containing a stunning portrait of this beloved pet

Theresa and her family would like to thank everyone involved in the search and Nottingham Pet Crematorium for the service. She said: “The family thank everyone for being so kind and showing so much compassion. You all made it possible to give Blu the send off he deserved. We could not have done that without you and we really appreciate your kindness”.

You may have seen the stories in the news in recents days about vets with a monopoly now charging excessive fees for their services. Unfortunately we are also aware that the big 6 group of vets also suggest you should let them look after the cremation of your beloved pet. Please remember you always have a choice and you can ask whoever you wish to look after your friend. If you choose the vet's service, your pet may be cremated along with other pets.

We guarantee your pet will receive an individual cremation at Nottingham Pet Crematorium. We are members of The Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria which was founded in order to set and maintain a code of conduct to ensure quality of service.

The members operate independent businesses but are all committed to the same high standards of professional conduct and client care. You are assured of an honest and reliable service that will operate to strict standards and handle your pet with care and respect at all times.

If you need any advice before selecting a service for your beloved pet please give us a call, we are always here to help and advise.
