River Trent Tragedy

You may have read about the recent tragic events in the River Trent near the Embankment Suspension Bridge. Blu, a pocket bully, unfortunately jumped into the water and was immediately washed under near the bridge on March 4th.

Despite the courageous efforts of his owner’s sons, Dylan & Kayden, the dog was missing in the fast flowing River Trent. Dylan jumped in to try to save Blu and he had to be pulled out by his hood by his brother Kayden.

Owner Theresa Smyth and her family had been taking a walk along the embankment with their 18 month old pet and stopped at the steps near the bridge. Blu has always loved water and was used to running into the sea on their trips to the coast. Theresa thinks he saw a reflection or thought it was a step when he walked into the river and was immediately swept away.

Over the next hours and days, numerous searches of the area took place. Notts Lost Dogs SAR led the search which included using a specialist drone alongside an underwater team using sonar from Lancashire based Beneath the Surface.

Kim Jefcott who runs the team of volunteers at Notts Lost Dogs SAR explained: “Following such a tragic accident we took control and organised the search because we have the expertise and experience to manage such a difficult situation. Unfortunately, this time we didn’t get the outcome we desired but at least we were able to re-unite Blu with his family. It was heart-breaking for everyone involved”.

The dive team from Beneath the Surface found Blu on Saturday 23rd March but could not recover him due to the water conditions. The next day the River Trent was calmer and within half an hour they had Blu out the water and on the way home to Theresa.

As soon as we became aware of this tragic accident we offered to look after Blu free of charge. Blu arrived at Nottingham Pet Crematorium with his owner Theresa and we provided an appropriate send off for this wonderful pet.

We laid him to rest in our farewell room and the family we able to spend private time with him and say their goodbyes. We provided paw prints and returned Blu’s ashes in a large gold frame containing a stunning portrait of this beloved pet

Theresa and her family would like to thank everyone involved in the search and Nottingham Pet Crematorium for the service. She said: “The family thank everyone for being so kind and showing so much compassion. You all made it possible to give Blu the send off he deserved. We could not have done that without you and we really appreciate your kindness”.

You may have seen the stories in the news in recents days about vets with a monopoly now charging excessive fees for their services. Unfortunately we are also aware that the big 6 group of vets also suggest you should let them look after the cremation of your beloved pet. We guarantee your pet will receive an individual cremation at Nottingham Pet Crematorium. We are members of The Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria which was founded in order to set and maintain a code of conduct to ensure quality of service.

We installed our beautiful memory tree back in 2018 and we have been amazed by its popularity. So many pet lovers leave incredibly moving tributes for their beloved pets.

The stunning 6 foot illuminated tree is still proving very popular with owners. You can leave your personal tribute on a beautiful, hand crafted, individual card made by our manager Simon. Alternatively you can make your own personal tribute as long as it is less than a maximum of 6cm x 6cm. It can be any shape or design you choose. Let your leaves grow on the Memory Tree for as long as you wish, and help our tree continue to grow year on year.

Our manager Simon, who is pictured with the tree, said: “It is such a fantastic idea and it is especially popular with children. They love to leave their own personal tribute. The service is free of charge and we supply the hand made cards. We love to help our the pet owners at this difficult time.”

Woodie the hero blood donor

Nottingham Pet Crematorium were incredibly honoured to look after Woodie the wonderful greyhound recently. This amazing dog donated 10,000ml of blood to save scores of dogs' lives.

Rita Harbury-Carlisle the owner of Nottingham pet Crematorium said: "Woodie was laid to rest in our chapel and we provided an individual cremation which allowed his owners to take his ashes away later that afternoon. It was an absolute privilege to be allowed to look after Woodie who had saved the lives of so many others - he was a true hero".

Woodie's owner Wendy Gray said: "Firstly can I say what an exceptional service Nottingham Pet Crematorium provide for grieving owners. You surpass expectations and the final touch bought us to tears once more. Thank you for taking care of our very special boy. He donated blood with Pet Blood Bank over the years. He now lives on in those he saved".

Woodie made 22 separate donations to the Pet Blood Bank over a six year period and saved around 88 dogs.

Owner Wendy added: "When we donated he never showed any sign of stress and then came bouncing out - even though he’s got all four legs empty of blood. Dogs get a full health check every time they go to make sure they're okay to donate. They go up on the table and immediately go into a sort of daze and the vets take the blood.”

Greyhound blood is particularly sought after as it is more likely to be negative, which allows it to be given to any dog in an emergency. Dogs can have either positive or negative blood. It is thought that only 30 percent of dogs have negative blood.

Wendy adopted Woodie when he was three and he has been giving blood ever since. He received a special hamper for his retirement, complete with a ceramic bowl, dog collar and treats.

She said: “He just strode into the room, got all the cuddles and treats and then laid down patiently as they took his blood."

Plasmas are extracted from the blood and these are used to treat illnesses and for emergencies. Wendy said owners whose pets are saved from blood transplants can't thank her enough.

She added: “Dogs are my whole life. Lots of people don't realise blood banks exist. As an ambassador, if I see healthy dogs I’ll introduce them to the bank. People are always surprised to hear that dogs need blood too. I always post on social media after we’ve visited the bank, and after all these visits I still gets people saying ‘I didn’t know that existed’."

The bank, set up in 2007, operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure blood is always available. It now provides blood to vet surgeries across the country.

To be a donor a dog must weigh at least 25kg, be between the ages of one and eight, and be fit and healthy. Any dog below 25kg has not got enough blood to give, and after eight dogs blood is not optimal. After every donation, dogs receive a gift bag for their troubles.

Wendy added: “Owners are always so grateful. Occasionally they will contact you and say things like ‘my dog wouldn't be here without it.’ There was a case a couple of years ago that traced Woodie's blood to a dog that was saved. It was a little dog at the other end of the country with a blood disorder who would have died without Woodie’s blood. My Woodie helped save all these dogs' lives, he was just amazing.”

Anyone interested in allowing their dog to donate blood can visit the Pet Blood Bank’s website https://www.petbloodbankuk.org/ or call 01509 232222.

We are absolutely delighted to be nominated as Pet Crematorium of the Year at the Good Funeral Awards.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominated us.

The Good Funeral Awards are hosted by Association of Green Funeral Directors and the final decision is now in the hands of the judges. The finalists will be announced at the end of August, with the winners attending an awards ceremony hosted by former Eastenders star Shaun Williamson, best known for playing Barry Evans in over 700 episodes of the BBC soap.

One of our wonderful nominations read: "We have used Nottingham Pet Crematorium on three occasions over a number of years and we have always received caring, compassionate, personal and professional service at an extremely difficult time of our lives, when our pets have unfortunately passed away. Our doggies Lady, Cassie and Abbie have all received Antara’s excellent, affectionate and caring service, from Rita, John and Simon. We have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Nottingham Pet Crematorium for this award due to the wonderful caring and professional service that they provide."

To read this is an award in itself. Thank you so much for all your support. We really do appreciate all your kind comments.

03/07/2023

Nottingham Pet Crematorium came to the aid of a pet owner Debs Hayball after her 14 year old terrier Hugo tragically died following a vicious attack by a larger dog.

Earlier big-hearted Ruddington residents on the Pasture Lane estate had raised funds to pay veterinary fees in an attempt to save Hugo's life following the attack. Unfortunately Debs beloved pet could not be saved.

Rita Harbury-Carlisle, the owner of Nottingham Pet Crematorium, stepped in after reading about the terrible incident. Rita said: "This is such a tragic story that touched our hearts. As pet lovers we were devastated to read about poor Hugo. We decided to offer our services free of charge due to the emotional stress caused to Debs. We provided a bespoke cremation service, a set of paw prints and framed hair clippings. We hope we helped Debs in some small way at this very sad time".

Eyewitnesses to the attack said Hugo was brutally savaged by a much larger XL Bully dog outside her home, with Debs also bitten on as she tried to protect her pet.

The attacking dog, which reportedly had no lead or collar, was subsequently seized by Nottinghamshire Police. Neighbours who witnessed the incident were left shocked and saddened.

One resident told West Bridgford Wire: ‘This dog was brutally attacked on the owners door step by an XL Bully. This dog lives on a very friendly estate in Ruddington and had to be sadly put down due to his injuries. During that attack there were four men trying to get the attacker off the poor little soul and the XL bully ended up biting the owner in the process. It was an horrific incident and the whole community is devastated.’

Victoria Marconetto-Tyson, who set up a fundraising page, said: 'The neighbours and people who witnessed the attack are traumatised. They are heartbroken for Debs. We’ll all miss seeing Hugo around the neighbourhood, he was a lovely, friendly and gorgeous little dog.'

Debs Hayball, Hugo’s owner said: “I’d like to reach out and say a huge ‘Thank You’ to all my neighbours who came to try to help Hugo. The outpouring of love for him is quite overwhelming. He was clearly loved by many. I would also like to thank Rita, John and Simon at Nottingham Pet Crematorium for taking such loving care of Hugo”.

We were delighted to attend the The Royal Kennel Club's 150th anniversary garden party at Buckingham Palace in London this week.

Queen Elizabeth was patron of the Kennel Club for 70 years. It was founded in 1873 and is the oldest recognised kennel club in the world. The club officially celebrated 150 years on April 5, when King Charles confirmed the club with a Royal prefix - which is now known as the Royal Kennel Club.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were joined by Prince Michael of Kent as they hosted the garden party at the palace in London.

The Royal Kennel club is now headed by the Prince and is one of the largest organisations in the UK devoted to dog health, welfare and training.

King Charles, in an act of homage to his late mother Queen Elizabeth, permitted the dog organisation - which was championed by the monarch, to have a garden party at the palace.

The Duke and Duchess, who were the party's hosts, entertained the many guests in attendance. They also treated guest dogs to a very royal meet-and-greet, as they patted the hounds and spent time with them.

During the day we were pictured with Royal Kennel Club chairman Tony Allcock and several Yeoman of the guard.

It was an honour and a privilege to attend such a wonderful event.

Nottingham Pet Crematorium were delighted to make a significant donation to Team Edward Labrador Rescue charity earlier today.

The charity’s founder Wendy Brassington visited Nottingham Pet Crematorium to collect the funds from Rita Harbury-Carlisle and manager Simon Saunders.

Rita said: “Team Edwards does such a wonderful job; we are delighted to be able to help them. Wendy and her team put in so much effort to help the dogs at their time of need. Some of the money was raised by donation from pet lovers and we added to this. We wish them well in the future and we hope this helps in some small way”.

Team Edward is a non-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers who are dedicated to the re-homing of Labradors. Their aim is simply to help as many Labradors as possible who find themselves in need of a new forever home.

Team Edward was founded in 2013 and named after Wendy's rescue dog Edward which was looked after by Nottingham Pet Crematorium.

Wendy herself was nominated for a Pride of Britain award in 2015, and recognised by the then Prime Minister, David Cameron, for a Point of Light Award for her dedication to the breed and her fundraising efforts.

Wendy said: “Thank you so much for this donation. This money will be put towards the care of 3 chocolate female Labradors - Tetra, Delta and Xanti. The dogs were taken into our care last week. Sadly, their owner passed away and no one found him at home for a couple of days. The Labradors were left in a small pen in the lounge. As you can imagine they were all in a sad state.

There have been many vet visits and Tetra is having an operation next week to remove a cyst from the side of her face before going to her new home at the end of April. We have already found the most wonderful homes for the other two.”

We are saddened by the news of the death of British TV star Paul O'Grady who died 'unexpectedly but peacefully' on Tuesday evening.

The star was a "beloved" ambassador for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, who was honoured with a Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards for his work with For The Love Of Dogs.

Paul was a kindhearted star who was well known for his love of animals. Hopefully he is now at peace with friends over the rainbow bridge.

"Simon
You were so very kind, caring and compassionate towards us as well as to our darling little girl. The whole experience will remain with us always.

Entering the chapel of rest was breathtaking and serene. Our beloved Kandi looked so peaceful and beautiful surrounded by lovely flowers. The whole atmosphere was so calming, allowing us as much time as we needed with our Princess.

When we collected her ashes, it was lovely to see her name all lit up and again was amazing, and again was breathtaking and to have a heart note placed on the memory tree was amazing.

Once again, thank you for making a devastating time so
much more bearable for us..
We can't thank you enough

To Rita John and Simon

We want to say thank you so very much for making such a sad day into a wonderful memorable one in the passing over the rainbow bridge of our beloved Princess Kandi.
