Week 1 Complete✅⭐️

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting 5 month old Simba the 5.5 stone Dogue de Bordeaux and his family, to begin our Foundation obedience training course!

This program is built to not only teach Simba his foundation obedience! But is Also designed to focus on any unique household challenges he is facing 🐾

Simba has shown a keen interest to learn and is already making some amazing progress after our first session ⭐️

Meet Stanley the 9 month old beagle who came to to tackle his Lead walking, counter surfing and all round understanding of the word ‘NO’🐕

Stanley has done amazing so far and shown a keen interest to learn and please over the course of just 2 days ✅

TOP TIPS TO HELP YOUR NERVOUS DOG 🐕

-structure and routine ✅
Dogs thrive on routine, not only does it create a daily structure to enable them to know when to increase and decrease energy levels. But it also helps build confidence through repatition in what they are doing at any given point in the day! 🐾

-clear confident guidance ✅
in the majority of cases a dog becomes nervous due to being unsure of a trigger or situation. Therefore they need a clear confident leader figure to trust in. Once they can trust your opinion and guidance they can build confidence knowing they are doing the right thing and that you have everything under control 🦮

-timing your rewards ✅
Timing your rewards is always difficult when first approaching any form of behaviour modification.
To first understand that your ‘touch!Talk!and eye contact!’ Are all forms of reinforcement is key 🔑
You do not want to comfort the dog when nervous! As your touch,talk and eye contact will reinforce the behaviours.
But you do want to provide clear guidance and reinforce the correct decision making! 🐾

Meet Mabel and Wilf from 🐾

Both are big softy’s at heart but due to Mabel’s unsure behaviours she had began lunging and chasing cars! 🚗

Herding dog breeds commonly pick up car reactivity due to there need to control movement. These breeds have been selectively bred for generations to gather and move livestock, which involves a heightened sensitivity to movement and a strong prey drive.

When they see fast-moving cars, their instinctual response might be to chase or attempt to control the vehicle, similar to how they would manage livestock. This behavior can be exacerbated if they are not properly exposed to vehicles or if they have a high level of arousal or anxiety.

Therefore, it’s important for owners of herding breeds to provide appropriate training and management to address this instinctual behavior and ensure their safety around 🚘

A huge part of Mabel’s work has been building confidence around the distraction as a pose to over exposing. 🐾

The 3 areas to focus on when tackling your dogs reactivity🐾

Social Bubble:
Refers to the distance your dog can be from a trigger without engaging. The goal is to gradually shrink this bubble by exposing your dog to controlled, less challenging environments before progressing to more challenging situations.
Timing:
Involves understanding when to intervene, reward, or acknowledge a trigger. Effective timing is crucial for reinforcing positive behaviour and preventing escalation.
Change of Behavior:
Focuses on providing clarity and structure, setting goals and targets, and teaching new behaviours in a controlled environment before implementing them in more stressful or distracting situations.

Desensitization is useful in dog training because it helps prevent fear-based behaviors, such as aggression or excessive barking, and allows the dog to confidently navigate various environments and situations.

Separation anxiety👀🐕

When dogs become overly reliant on constant human presence, they may struggle when left alone.
This anxiety can manifest in destructive behavior, excessive barking, or other distress signals.

Effective training is crucial in addressing separation anxiety, but it’s important not to rush the process. Gradual desensitisation and guidance helps build the dog’s confidence and independence.
Giving the dog an alternative method of releasing this energy build up is key!

Rushing through training can backfire, reinforcing anxiety rather than alleviating it. For example:
Get your dog used to being separated from you in the same building before going out for a meal.
