⭐ Fun Fact Friday ⭐

Did you know...

Scottish Terriers, or Scotties as they're more commonly known, were originally bred to ground after fox, badger and other vermin?

As such, they are incredibly tenacious and courageous. This tenacity can sometimes be mistaken for stubbornness.

They come in more than just black coat, as Peggy here demonstrates. They can be seen in Brindle, Black Brindle, Black (like lovely Rory) or the lovely Wheaten colour.

These two stopped by to get their next 3 months of flea and worming treatment as a part of our in house plan!

Intussusception is a gastrointestinal disorder that occurs when a part of a dog's intestine telescopes into a neighboring part, potentially obstructing the bowel and compromising blood supply. It can occur in dogs of any age, but is more common in younger animals and large breed dogs.

Future 😍

He came in after his owner noticed he seemed in pain when eating and suspected he had something inside his mouth. On further inspection, the vet found a mucocele inside his throat. This is a sack of fluid/ infection material that can be caused by many different things.

The vet drained the sack and placed stitches to ensure his throat was clear and unobstructed.

He recovered well and went home for some TLC ❤️

This is the lovely Kia,
Kia was unfortunately attacked by another dog which caused her to have a deep open wound exposing her mandible (her jaw)!
Thankfully our vet cleaned the area and stitched her up adding a drain into the wound to allow it to heal better!
She’s now doing much better🩷

🎆 Remember Remember the Fifth of November 🎆

Fireworks can be stressful and even dangerous for pets because of their sensitive hearing and acute response to loud noises. Here are some hints and tips to help keep your fur baby happy, healthy and safe.

🎇 Keep your pet indoors and provide a safe space
Choose a place where your pet can hide and feel safe, like a garage or utility room. You can provide toys and other things to keep them occupied.

🎇 Block out noise
Close windows and curtains, and play music or TV to muffle the sound of fireworks.

🎇 Use calming products and talk to your Vet
If your pet shows signs of severe stress, like aggression, destructiveness, or a change in eating habits, you should consult your vet.

🎇 Make sure your pet is microchipped and registered with the correct details
This will make it easier to return your pet to you if they get scared and run away.

🎇 Walk your dog during daylight hours
Avoid walking your dog when fireworks are likely to be set off.

🎇 Prepare in advance
You can seek veterinary help or contact an accredited behaviourist to create a plan to help your pet.

⭐ Fun Fact Friday ⭐

The most popular of 4 setter breeds in the UK, the Irish Red Setter is best known for its striking chestnut coloured coat. This well known gundog breed has a long history in country sports.

The name Setter comes from the natural instinct of these dogs to freeze on scent of game birds, "setting" its location. Though still used for this, Hunt, Point, Retrieve (HPR) breeds are becoming much more common in country sports.

Of the 4 Setter breeds, the Irish Red Setter is the only one not to be considered as a vulnerable native breed. Much like the others, they are common place in the show ring, flaunting their racing physique and flowing coat.

Young Holly here will be using that racing physique and gorgeous flowing lines to win hearts and get treats. It certainly worked on our team when she came for her 2nd vaccine today! ❤️

This lovely girl came into us for her BVA hip and elbow score!

The hip and elbow radiographs are scored on faults – the lower the score, the better the conformation of the hip and elbow. The current BVA advice is to only breed from dogs with a hip score of below the breed average and to only breed from a dog with a zero elbow score.

Here at local vets we offer a fixed price of £450 for hip and elbow scoring.

CICI🥰
This gorgeous little girl had to visit our out of hours emergency team as she really wasn’t well.
Our vets fitted a nasal tube and removed a lot of nasty fluid in her stomach which was making her unwell.
Throughout this whole process she was so brave!
Cici went home with medication and is now feeling much better!

Puppies are a lot quicker to show dehydration than adult dogs, it is always much safer to get them checked by a vet if there are any concerns. Puppies with vomiting and diarrhea should be seen by a vet if any of the following apply: They are lethargic, not acting normally or not wanting to play.

⭐️ Fun Fact Friday ⭐️

Did you know the elegant Afghan Hound is more than just a show dog?

While the gorgeous flowing coat of this dignified breed is probably most known for its striking ring presence, Afghan Hounds were once used for their hunting prowess. Used for hunting rabbits and larger game, this elegant sighthound could certainly hold its own!

The long, luxurious coat is thought to have been developed to help protect these working dogs through harsher mountain climates.

Unlike his ancestors, however, Paul prefers to spend his time snuggled up in bed with his mum. He dropped by to see us today to update his weight, and get plenty of cuddles of course. ❤️

ADORABLE🥹😋

This lovely girl came into us for an emergency C Section.
She recovered very well and went home for lots of cuddles from her owner🥰

Here’s some recovery information:
What should I expect during the mother's recovery period?
The mother will be given an anesthetic that should be eliminated from her body quickly. Most dogs have recovered from anesthesia by the time they are discharged to go home. Complete recovery from anesthetic may take 2 to 12 hours, depending on the anesthetics used, the mother's physical condition, her age at the time of surgery, and how long she was in labor before the surgery.

During the immediate recovery period, she must be closely monitored so she does not fall and hurt herself or roll over and crush the newborn puppies. The puppies should not be left alone with her until she is completely awake, able to stand on her own, and interested in caring for her puppies. The puppies may also be sedated from the anesthetic, and so may be sluggish and slow to nurse, at first.

Everyone meet the Beautiful Luna ❤️

From statues and remains found in tombs that have been dated to the 'Han Dynasty' (206 B.C.) The Chuandong Hound has survived more than 2,000 years through to the present day.

The dogs are still highly valued by their owners in rural China as a scent hunting hound which is keeping the breed 'Fit for purpose'

The breed was first introduced in 2016. There are less than 40 Chuandongs in the UK! 🐕🐶

⭐ Superficial Flexor Digital Tenotomy ⭐ This is surgery performed on patients suffering with Corns, typically affecting Greyhounds. A Corn is a circular area on the pad that hardens with time and becomes painful to walk on. As you can see from the video, an incision is made over the tendon, which is then cut and a small section of the tendon is removed. By doing this, the toe is lifted and removes the pressure on the corn against the floor, which instantly relieves the pain. We performed this surgery on Bailey today and we hope he recovers soon and can go back on painless walks! ❤️

We had the lovely Loki in today for his BOAS surgery. We are very happy to report that Loki is doing so much better and receiving some very well deserved TLC at home by his family ❤️

Ticks are active through the spring and summer months, sometimes even into early autumn. Throughout this period it is important to keep your pet protected from tick bites and potentially contracting Lyme's Disease, and you can do this by regularly administering one of the various tick prevention treatments.

Elongated soft palate reduction surgery! BOAS- A true representation of how a BOAS surgery can better the lives of your pet. Just look at the before and after of Chunks breathing😲

Foreign bodies are not always internal! This lovely girl Dotty had a very long peice of grass stuck up her nose causing her severe irritation! Thanks to her owners and the team we managed to remove this unwanted guest and send her home feeling much better!💙

Seriously the cutest ever!!!

FLY STRIKE❌❌❌ Flystrike is a painful and sometimes fatal condition caused by flies laying their eggs on another animal. These hatch into maggots, which eat the flesh of their 'hosts'. If your pet becomes infested, ask a vet for help immediately. As it is summer now your pet is more likely to get flystrike! Please use preventatives to avoid this turning into fly strike.

CHOKING HAZARDS Choking can be so dangerous and as you can see in this video it can be something as simple as a peice of apple. Please be mindful in what your pets can get hold of and if they show any signs of choking please go straight to your nearest vets!!

Handsome Reggie had his BOAS surgery with us this week and this is how it went 🥰

This is Reggie, he came in to have a pre neuter check with our nurses but he was showing signs of BOAS, our nurse asked the vet to come and have a look at Reggie as she was concerned about his breathing. The vet diagnosed Reggie with BOAS. Reggie then came for his surgery and is now feeling much better and will now enjoy his summer much more as he won’t be having trouble with his breathing 🤩
