⭐ Fun Fact Friday ⭐

Apollo, the Greek god of sunlight, music, and poetry, was credited with a bright, shining countenance of great beauty. At the reins of his fiery chariot, Apollo drove across the sky, bringing the life-giving warmth of the sun. Fittingly, the tall and handsome Great Dane is called “the Apollo of dogs,” with a gentle temperament housed in a majestic body worthy of the sun-god himself.

Great Danes originated in Germany, most likely from the Irish Wolfhound and the English Mastiff. Some believe that they even have an ancient origin as drawings of dogs who look like Great Danes have been found on Egyptian artifacts and in Babylonian temples.

Great Danes were originally bred to hunt wild boar, deer and bears. They were also used as guardians for German nobility 🐶

⭐ Mischief Monday ⭐

Tilly was bought in to us by her very worried Mum after she had witnessed her eat something small and shiny. Can you guess what it is?

She was given an injection to make her sick with the hopes she would bring the shiny item back up. Unfortunately this didn't work and this very mischievous little pup needed to have surgery.

Tilly received lots of loves and cuddles whilst in our care and we are happy to report she is recovering very well 🥰🐶

If you guessed it correctly Tilly swallowed a 50p coin! 🪙

⭐ Fun Fact Friday ⭐

French bulldogs originated in Nottingham, England in the 1800s. They were created by breeding English bulldogs with pugs and terriers after bull-baiting was banned in England in 1835. The breed became popular in France, especially with society ladies, and was later known as the Bouledogue Francais.

An early version of the breed were used by lace makers in the UK shortly before the industrial revolution to warm their laps while they worked.

Frenchies are known for their unique vocalizations ranging from high-pitched whines to deep, throaty growls. Some French Bulldogs have even been known to “talk” in grunts and groans 🐶

⭐ Fun Fact Friday ⭐

Whippets, like all sighthounds, were bred to hunt using their sight-driven prey instinct, coursing game in open areas at high speeds. Numerous representations of small, sighthound-like hunting dogs can be found in Ancient Egyptian artworks dating back thousands of years.

In medieval England, a small greyhound-type breed became popular as a ratting dog. The first written use of the word 'whippet' in English was in 1610! Whippets were popular in Victorian era England for their racing abilities, and were known as the "poor man's racehorse".

Known for its remarkable speed, the Whippet holds the title for the fastest running speed within its weight and size range, and is believed to have the fastest idle-to-running acceleration of any dog.

Zuber, born in 1889, is thought to be the ancestor of every Whippet in the world 🌍 🐕

⭐ What's new Wednesday ⭐

Does your dog scavenge on walks❓

Do they fall into a breed type requiring them to wear a muzzle❓

Do you travel to countries which require muzzles for public transport❓

There's a whole host of reasons dogs wear muzzles and whatever those may be, here at Local Vets, we advocate for muzzles and applaud those striving to do their best by their dog.

Our nurses at our Halesowen branch now offer muzzle consults, using the muzzles made and designed by a small team at The Muzzle Movement. Not only can our nurses help size your dog for one of these muzzles, they can also provide help and training ideas to help make your muzzle journey easier!

Following consultation, they can offer you a discount code for 10% off all purchases at The Muzzle Movement.

Advocate for your best friend, call our Halesowen team today and book your muzzle consultation ⭐

⭐ Fun Fact Friday ⭐

Watson, the Irish Wolfhound 🐺🇮🇪

Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest dog breed, with males standing up to 32 inches at the shoulder and reaching up to 7 feet tall when standing on their hind legs.

The earliest written record of an Irish Wolfhound is from 391 A.D. They were once used as war dogs to drag soldiers off their horses.

Monks developed the breed to hunt wolves, which were considered a dangerous pest at the time. They were also used to hunt other big game, such as boars, deer, and elks.

Irish Wolfhounds almost went extinct in Ireland in the late 1800s due to a number of factors, including the extinction of the wolf in Ireland, the Irish famine, and the practice of giving them away to visiting nobility.

Irish Wolfhounds are featured in many Irish folk tales, including stories about their ability to see into a person's soul or to know if someone means harm to their master.
