For those of you in the midst of yet another storm.

Please check your fences and gates before letting your dogs out. Even take them out on lead.
Ensure your dogs microchips are up to date and registered (there were some issues recently regarding registrations).
If its really windy remember they may behave differently so don't let them off lead if you do walk them.
Charge your phones and make a few thermos of hot water in case of power cuts.
Remember it's ok NOT to walk them and to have a Duvet Day.
Charge up your kindle so you have something to do.
They may be a bit jumpy, scatter feeds, licky mats and chews will help them calm down.

Calm activities indoors such as treats and toys wrapped in blankets, searching for items, or just snuggling up on the sofa can give them an outlet.

It's a great opportunity to do some indoors fun training too.

Most importantly stay safe.

It's been torrential here, but thankfully missing the worst of it.

Anyone here with a dog that may fall under the XL Bully criteria?
Happy to give any advice I can. Feel free to message me.

My main advice is....
1. Neutering is going to be essential. Get in done asap.
2. Make sure you have insurance. You can get third party liability insurance through Dogs Trust membership for £25 a year.
3. Keep working on any behavioural issues and make sure you have good trained responses from your dog.
4. Get your dog muzzle trained.
5. Make sure your house is secure. Courts like to see high fences and lockable gates and an extra level of security at front doors such as a porch or an additional gate. Your dog should never be able to barge out of a door.
6. Don't let off lead in a public place. Either use along line or take to secure fields.
7. Might be worth considering a full assessment and behavioural report. One of my clients has already booked in for this week so that she's got it in place.

If you need any extra help or advice, let me know. The things you do now will add to your assessment as a "fit and proper person" to own such a dog.

You’re on a walk and you see a dog on a lead. Your dog is running free.

Q: What should you do next?
(Cue *who wants to be a millionaire* music).

Is it:
A: put your dog on a lead
B. Let your dog run over and say hello.
C: Shout “Don’t worry, he’s friendly.”
Or
D: What dog? You were playing candy crush.

The answer is…. A.

Did you get it right?

Many dog owners don’t. They don’t understand what a negatively life-altering situation a rogue dog can be for on-lead walkers.

Here’s why:

Dogs you don’t know could be on lead for 100s of reasons.

They could be blind.
They could be recovering from surgery.
They could be deaf.
They could be aggressive.
They might be scared of being approached by strangers.
They might be training.
They could be a service dog.
They may be a rescue.
They might be terrified of dogs they don’t know.
They could be elderly or physically vulnerable.
They might simply prefer to walk on lead.

In the end, it doesn’t matter why they are on a lead. It’s none of your business. But what is your business is CONSENT.

Leads are a little flag that say “don’t come close”.

When you see them, putting your dog on a lead is respectful. You show the other owner that you CARE about their choice and consent. It doesn’t matter if your dog has 100% perfect recall. You respect the other person and their dog enough to be courteous and kind to uphold everyone’s safety by making absolutely sure everyone is on a lead (no matter how much you trust your dog).

As a person who is often walking a dog on lead for all of many the reasons listed, I can’t tell you how my heart sings when I see someone extend this gesture to me and my pack.

Your dog has no right or business running up to ANYONE (dog or human) without clear PRIOR consent to do so.

You have a responsibility to ensure your dog is in control in a public place. Failing to recall is an offense. It counts as a dog out of control in a public place.

Look at these 2 crops ….
🔶Do you know the difference??
🔶Do you know why it matters to your dog ???
I’m a country girl and while looking across these Norfolk fields I realised that probably a lot of people / dog owners may not know this !!
✅Wheat has fat, even & fairly clean and straight heads…
⏹ Barley is finer/floppy and has horrible barbed strands on its ‘ears’ ! These attach VERY easily to your dogs coat and can work their way in to the skin (like most seed heads).
I learnt very early on not to let my long haired dogs go near/in any Barley fields… or it would mean hours of picking & combing these out 😫😫
( they break as you try to remove !)
Dogs shouldn’t be allowed to romp around in farmers fields anyway but this is another reason to keep them under control AND check their coats, skin & teeth/gums ever day 👌

Looking at hosting this, in our area. I do Alexis and is a fantastic lady and it is a great workshop .

Exercise!!!

Another topic that is worth considering is exercise, we all know that it’s important to a dog, not just for physical well being but also mental health!
But the type of exercise does matter!
Some things to consider:

🐶 Too much at too early an age can cause health issues/ joint problems.
🐶 Too little and your dog can become bored, destructive, unhappy and fat!
🐶 Ball throwing - this is something I see loads, and hear things like ‘he’s obsessed with balls’. Well firstly, the word obsessed indicates an unhealthy desire so in any format is not good. Secondly, so many injuries occur through dogs just running after a ball non stop, twisting, flipping, jumping etc putting a lot of stress on the joints. Thirdly, it often stops the dog from sniffing, taking in the environment or engaging positively with the owner. Throwing a ball is not engaging in my opinion, you are just a chucker! Personally I’d rather have better interactions with my dog.
🐶 stress - for the fearful dog, one thing to consider is, does he/she actually enjoy all these long walks? Are their triggers just stacking up and causing more stress?
🐶 over stimulated - is your dog not able to relax and settle at home? It could be that the constant exercise being given is actually over stimulating them to a point where they are too aroused to rest and so actually super tired?!
🐶 off lead - does your dog get a chance to run? Obviously if no recall then it’s not responsible to let your dog off but certain breeds could use a run, so consider hiring a secure field once a week to let them get that freedom. Obviously, training is also a good idea!
🐶 On lead - are they constantly pulling on a lead where it’s causing physical damage to them? Or maybe even to you? Again, get some help with this - keep an eye out for my next lead walking workshop!
🐶 New places - a dog can really benefit from changing walking venues regularly, imagine walking the same route every day on your only chance to get out the house?!!
🐶 Walking pace can also sometimes be too rushed! Let them sniff a bit! Plus steady pace and less rushing can in fact help create a calmer dog!
Thanks for reading 😊

What does it mean when your dog’s p**p is a weird coloUr instead of the usual chocolate brown?
Yellow/Orange
Can mean liver or gall bladder problems.
Green
Gall bladder problem, intestinal parasites or bacterial infection.
Blue
Your dog may have eaten rat poison.
Black
Can mean your dog’s digesting blood, especially if stools look tarry. May indicate upper GI tract bleeding, pancreatitis, ulcers, or a parasite.
Grey
May be a pancreas issue, especially if the stools are greasy. Could also mean gall bladder problem or parasites.
Bloody
Red or pink swirls like a strawberry milkshake can mean bleeding in the lower GI tract. Can be a sign of parvovirus in puppies.
Red jelly p**p (like strawberry jam) is very serious and could mean HGE – hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.
White Flecked
Can be normal in raw fed dogs with pieces of undigested bone or chalky stool. White flecks like grains of rice could be tapeworm segments. Check for fleas too – tapeworms can come from licking flea eggs.
Mucous
Continuing mucousy diarrhea could mean parasites, bacterial infections, inflammatory bowel disease, or, if bloody as well, HGE. Occasional mucousy stool usually just means your dog is detoxing something.
When To See Your Vet
It’s time for an emergency vet visit if you see …
Blue p**p
Strawberry milkshake swirls
Jelly/strawberry jam p**p
Bloody diarrhoea in a puppy
Continued mucous in diarrhoea

Please. For the love of dogs everywhere, stop taking everything out of your puppies mouth. You’re often creating more problems than you’re solving.

Puppies put everything in their mouths the way newly crawling or walking babies do. It’s the age of exploration and discovery and inquisitive little minds with teething little mouths means everything must be tasted. This is 100% normal developmental behavior. It shouldn’t be punished or discouraged.

When we sn**ch things out of their mouths, or chase them or grab it away from them, we run the risk of several issues, the top two being -

1. We teach our puppy that anything they have could be lost the second a human comes near, and that can very quickly snowball into resource guarding - which is already a natural behavior - but we are actually just encouraging it by validating to our puppy that they lose things when we are around. This is especially true in homes with children and toys out all the time. Then this spirals into all kinds of relationship issues down the road.

2. We can teach our puppy the best thing they can do is INHALE the item so they don’t lose it. This gets dangerous and ugly very quickly. It can also create puppies and dogs to then not even think but just grab consume.

Leaves, sticks, grass, mud, dust bunnies, socks (depending on your puppies size), shoes, all the things within reach are fair game for mouthing and chewing on. And yes, I let my puppies explore them all. Their teeth and jaws at this infantile stage aren’t going to do extreme harm to an item right now, so go head and feel what a shoe sole feels like, get it out of your system. If I don’t want certain things explored, I keep those things out of reach, end of story. Baby gates, playpens, even only pottying in areas of the yard where there’s no gravel. The ONLY things I will readily tackle my puppy over is medicine and/or broken glass. Everything else, even if it’s something I truly don’t want them to have; I take my time in retrieving it, but more often than not, the puppy will spit it out anyway and move on to graze on the next thing they can find.

The majority of puppies will explore the item with their mouth, shred it if they can, then move on to something else to repeat this process with. IF they consume any of it, it’s usually very minor and they will p**p it out later. We have to remember dogs have been existing for 18,000 years, 80% of them still living the way they always have, and going through this stage just fine, our human interventions are not always needed, even though we mean well and are trying to help.

Of course there are exceptions to this, and in those cases we have other solutions, but the majority of puppies I see exploring with their mouths DONT a need hands constantly grabbing them and removing it out of their jaws. If you find yourself doing that all the time, it may be on YOU to manage the environment better!

This process combines with the work we teach in all our puppy classes of having a puppy HAPPY to have you approach them when they are enjoying something in their mouth. We call it the “exchange game” where we teach how to trade. This helps puppies feel safe in letting you take something from them by learning they won’t ALWAYS lose it.

So, long story short, let your puppy - puppy. Grab a leaf, lay in the grass and shred it. Then find a stick to chew on. We have to get better at picking our battles with dogs if we are both as a species going to enjoy our time together.
