🎆🎆Fireworks Season 🎆🎆

Following our recent client evening all about supporting your furry family in fireworks season, we thought we would share some useful advice.

**Prepare**

There are a number of things you can do to best prepare you and your pet in advance of the fireworks events. There are a range of products that can be used to help settle your pet .

- Plug ins/pheromone treatments:

Adaptil (dog) 🐕/Feliway (cat)🐈

These are pheromone treatments based on the pheromone a mother cat/dog releases when calming their young. These are available in a range of products including plug ins, travel sprays, collars (dog only) etc

Pet Remedy (dog/cat/rabbit/bird/horse)🐶🐱🐰🐦🐴

This is a product containing certain essential oils that promote calmness and are safe to use in animals, this is also available in a range of products including plug ins, sprays, wipes, bandanas etc

- Calming supplements

There are a range of different calming supplements you can use for your pet available over the counter without a prescription. These work on a few different calming pathways such as milk and meat proteins that alter the uptake of serotonin in the brain. These are the ones we have available in practice:

Serenicare
Zylkene
Nutracalm

Pheromone treatments or calming supplements should be started as soon as possible for the best effect, and can take up to 2 weeks to be fully effective.

💊Prescription medication 💊

If your pet really struggles with fireworks season and shows high levels of stress, please get in touch with your vet to see if they can help with any prescription medication, make sure to do this a week or so in advance so you are fully prepared.

**Safe space**

Set up a safe space for your pet to retreat to during the fireworks events. Set this up as soon as possible to allow your pet time to adjust, you can also use the pheromone products mentioned above in these safe spaces.

**How to keep your pet safe**

When our pet's are afraid, they may bolt. This is a really important time to make sure your pet is micro-chipped and that all of their details are up to date so they can reunited if they do get spooked.

To help avoid this, try to avoid walking your dog after it gets dark to minimise the chance you will be outdoors when fireworks are being set off. Lock cat flaps and keep cats, rabbits and other small furries indoors. If your dog needs to go outside to toilet, take them out on a lead to minimise the chance of them getting scared and running off.

**On the night**

During fireworks events, there are a few things you can do to help minimise the stress experienced by your pet.

Close all curtains and doors to block out light and sound, you can use other sound such as the TV and radio as well, but make sure you don't put these on too loud. There are certain playlists available for different animals, as well as a dedicated radio show available on Classic FM to help calm pets.

If using calming supplements, check the instructions as some are safe to be repeated before the stressful event. If using any prescription medication, please follow the instructions on the packaging.

If using the pheromone plug ins, plug these in close to the area your pet will spend the most time, if using the sprays, use these on bedding and other items your pet will spend time near. You can also spray these on small pieces of fabric to tuck into your pet's collar.

Thundershirts are available for dogs, these are shirts that apply constant gentle pressure which can be calming for some dogs.

Try not to leave your pet alone during fireworks season, especially if this is their first experience of fireworks. Make sure to reassure them if they are worried, but stay calm as they will pick up on your behaviour if you panic. If they want to hide, let them!

**How to prepare for the future**

If your pet experiences stress during the fireworks season, you can help prepare them for next year. Sound desensitisation programes, over time, can can help teach your pet to not be afraid of loud noises such as fireworks, thunder storms, and household noises such as the vacuum cleaner. Our behaviour nurse Rachel will be offering these as of January 2025.

If you have any questions or would like to order any of the products mentioned above, or to book in to see a vet, please get in touch on 02476 386 855.

We hope this information has been helpful and will help you and your pet prepare for the upcoming fireworks season. 🎆🎆

📞📞IMPORTANT CLIENT NOTICE📞📞

We’ve made some updates to how we handle your pet's repeat medication requests, including flea and worm treatments.

Our phone menu has changed, so please listen carefully. To request your pet’s medications, select options 3 or 4 depending on which medications you require . You’ll then be prompted to leave a clear message, which will go to our dedicated inboxes for the relevant teams to address.

Please allow up to 3 working days for your request to be processed. We’ll text you once your medications are ready for collection.

We hope these changes will help reduce call volume at reception, leading to shorter wait times and improved handling of emergency and appointment calls.

You can also request your pets medications on our website 😀

Thank you for your understanding!

Kind Regards
