Nematodirus Risk in Lambs- HIgh/Very High for our area.

Please see attached link to the SCOPS Nematodirus forecast. If you have lambs of 5-6 weeks plus grazing pasture that carried lambs on last spring then they are at a high risk of being exposed to Nematodirus larvae. Please assess the risk to your lambs and dose accordingly with a white wormer drench. Nematodirus can cause high mortality and strike without warning.

The forecast can be used in combination with your grazing history to assess the risk of Nematodirus infection in your lambs.

Unfortunately our early lambing flocks have been having deformed lambs due to Schmallenberg virus. APHA are doing FREE testing on brain samples and/or blood sampling of ewes. This helps with surveillance and to know the true picture of how it is impacting the country. This may help with vaccine production going forward. Please contact us if you would like us to submit any samples from your flock.

If you get lambs or calves that:

• Are born small, weak, deformed or blind. ('Dummy calf or lamb').
• Are stillborn and deformed.
• Die within a few days.

Contact your private vet immediately to rule out bluetongue. Schmallenberg can also cause these signs as well as bovine viral diarrhea or border disease in sheep.

We offer free testing for Schmallenberg. Discuss our free testing service with your private vet or contact your nearest APHA Veterinary Investigation Centre http://apha.defra.gov.uk/vet-gateway/surveillance/diagnostic/national-network.htm
