Vampire Crabs 🦀

These amphibious crabs are best kept in a well-covered aquarium that provides extensive above-water areas for climbing.

The Vampire Crab is a small, colourful, semi-terrestrial species known from rainforest valleys on the Indonesian island of Java. These brightly coloured decapods have earned this formidable common name from their glowing eyes and crepuscular feeding habits. The natural habitat consists of rocky caves and small burrows excavated in the soil of the valley slopes, near to the edge of the freshwater stream that flows through the area.

Approximately 2/3 of the layout should be land, and 1/3 of it water. These crabs are not fully aquatic, and absolutely MUST have an area where they can climb free of the water, where they will spend the majority of their time basking in the humid air. The terrestrial area should be sandy with plenty of roots, marginal/terrestrial plants, and rocky caves (which make excellent hiding places when the crabs have moulted), and the water area should be heated and filtered as normal. The water needs to be deep enough for the crabs to completely submerge themselves when moulting.

They will be available from Saturday 5th July after they have settled in store.

As the summer days stretch on and the mercury inches up the thermometer, it can be all too easy to enjoy the sunshine and forget about the effects of the heat on your fish. But if you find that the water in your aquarium is slowly hotting up, don’t be alarmed, as there are plenty of easy ways to keep things cool and keep your fish happy.

With the temperature rising this weekend, it’s essential to make sure your pond stays well oxygenated, as higher temperatures can reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water, something that can quickly affect the health of your fish and overall pond balance. At Maidenhead Aquatics, we understand how important it is to maintain a healthy environment for your aquatic life during hot spells, which is why we offer a wide range of exclusive pond pumps, available in a variety of sizes to suit ponds both large and small, designed to improve water circulation and boost oxygen levels efficiently. Whether you're upgrading your current setup or starting fresh, our pumps combine reliability, performance, and value to help keep your pond in the best condition all summer long.
