“According to the Veterinary Medicines Regulations, to prescribe POM-Vs, a veterinary surgeon must carry out a clinical assessment of the animal and the animal must be under their care.”

With lambing in full swing, we thought it would be a good idea to highlight the changes in prescription regulations that were put in place by the RCVS and came into effect in September 2023. The changes affect prescription only medications (POM-V) and how we can dispense them. The 2 main changes that will impact you are stated below –

1) If you come into the surgery to pick up medication that hasn’t previously been ordered, you may have to wait for one of our vets to become available to authorise the medication prescription. This may involve a quick chat with the vet before we can dispense the medication bottles to you. The vet prescribing and dispensing the medication “should ensure they have an in-depth knowledge of the premises, including its production systems, the environment, disease challenges and the general health status of the herd, flock or group.” All this means is that only certain vets (vets that have previously visited your farm) will be able to dispense drugs to you.

To keep you from hanging about in the surgery waiting on a vet to become available, please give us a call with any medication order requests prior to collecting the meds. This will allow time for a vet to check and dispense the medication or phone you back for a catch up before dispensing.

2)If you are lucky enough to have not had a vet visit your premises in the past 12 months, it means that we can no longer define your animals as ‘under our care’. This means that we can no longer dispense any medications to this group of animals until we visit the farm. According to the guidance, “Veterinary surgeons should have attended and inspected the premises and physically examined at least one representative animal prior to prescribing, or recently enough to ensure they have adequate current information and knowledge to prescribe responsibly and effectively”.

If you think this applies, please give us a call and we will be more than happy to arrange a visit. We will need to visit your farm at least once per year to ensure the animals can be classes as ‘under our care’ and we can continue to prescribe and dispense POM-V medications. If you are not a member of a recognised health/quality assurance scheme, you will also require an Establishment Veterinary Visitation Attestation to sell your stock, which can be done at the annual visit and lasts for 12 months.

For anyone that is regularly blessed with our vet’s presence on your farm, only the 1st change applies to you.

Any concerns or questions please give us a call 🐽🐮🐴🌱☀️👩‍🌾👨‍🌾

**customer notice**

Oban Vets have had a break in last night and unfortunately we can’t currently get to our phones to answer them. We have arranged for a divert to a mobile to kick in, as soon as possible. We kindly ask, if your enquiry isn’t an emergency please could you email the practice; [email protected] and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can, but obviously there will be a delay for all non urgent enquiries whilst we get things sorted.

Please only call the practice for emergencies as we don’t have the capacity to deal with routine enquiries currently. Please email all routine/non urgent/non emergency questions and we’ll get back to you when we can.

We really appreciate your patience at this time.

In the lead up to New Year's Eve!

Another celebration, and at midnight on New Year's Eve while some of us celebrate others will be very frightened! So here is a reshare of our top tips!

Although spectacular to watch they have very real implications for the welfare of our wildlife, livestock and pet animals.

⬇️Here is some advice this firework season. Stay tuned for more individual advice on each section in the coming weeks.

🐱Cats
✅Check microchip details are up to date
✅Try and keep them inside after dark. We understand this can be difficult. You may need to provide more play and calming aids to help them with a change in routine
✅Close all doors and windows to prevent them bolting
✅Shut curtains to dim the noise and flashes
✅ Give them a safe hiding place or don't disturb them if they find their own safe place to settle. Cats often like to be up high

🐶Dogs
✅Check microchip details are up to date
✅Walk before dark. If toileting outside go out with them on a leash to avoid them bolting if a firework goes off unexpectedly
✅Use calming aids
✅Give them as safe place to stay that is covered, dark and quiet. Do not lock them in here.
✅Watch that all doors are closed to avoid escape
✅You can comfort your pet, just ensure you stay safe if they are extremely agitated

🐭Small Furries
✅You may need to bring any animals inside if it doesn't cause them too much stress
✅They may require more bedding
✅Cover accomodation to prevent the lights from upsetting them
✅Move indoor enclosures away from windows to dull the noise and light

🐴Horses
✅Check local fire displays and prepare
✅Keep to a routine
✅Check the field or Stable is free from hazards
✅Give your vet notice if you require medication for your horses anxiety
✅Check on them regularly or stay with them if they are known to spook so you can react quickly if they become upset

🐮Livestock
✅Tell local farmers if you intend to have a Firework display and try to avoid the loud fireworks. Do not set fireworks off around fields containing livestock.

🦔 Wildlife
✅Check bonfires before lighting for any wildlife such as rodents or hedgehogs
✅Avoid setting fireworks off near known wildlife areas like nature reserves

🧑‍⚕️ How your vet can help
✅If your animals experiences distress then there are medications we can prescribe
✅You will likely need a prescription check even if you have it yearly
✅Veterinary professionals are also well placed to give you individual advice on how to help your pets

🎆If you plan to have a firework display:

➡️Please tell all your neighbours in advance that you plan it.
This will ensure they have had time to adequately prepare their animals for the event.
If possible please consider using alternative options such as silent or low noise fireworks if you know you are surrounded by families with cats, dogs, other pets or if you live by a farm or livery yard.

➡️Please tell owners how long the display will go on for and don't go beyond that so they know when it is safe to let their pets out for toileting or grazing.

➡️ Please do not release sky lanterns

Feel Good Friday! 🐶🥕

This little guy Odie was with us all of last week very unwell at only a few weeks old!

With the hard work of his owners and staff - look at him now! Full of beans at his re-examination showing his full character and making himself at home here at Oban Vets!

We are looking forward to seeing him at his vaccination appointments and to see him grow! 🌱

Countdown is on...

🎶Noise Desensitisation: Taking the nervousness out of the noise🎶

Noise anxiety: 50% of dogs react fearfully to some noise.

This can make firework season a very stressful time of year for both you and your dog.

➡️Noise phobias can be managed a number of ways but one very useful method is desensitisation and counter conditioning.

➡️Through repetition of quiet noise ( that are scary in louder levels), the dog learns to ignore the stimulus and the level of stimulation can be increased until higher levels of the stimulus are ignored.

➡️This is something that is best taken slowly with dedication, commitment and persistence and only using positive training techniques. If you start now you may make a positive difference to bonfire night and new year fireworks.

Check out this website for more information on noise phobias ⬇️

On 1st September 2023, our regulator, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, made changes to the way we provide your veterinary care and prescribe products for your pet.

The new guidances requires that a physical examination of the pet has to be performed every time any antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals and antiparasiticides are prescribed. This includes topical prescription flea/worm/tick products.

How this will effect you-
- you may be asked to come in for an examination for your repeat flea and tick medication more frequently.
-please order your repeat prescription as normal but be aware we may call you if your pet is required to have an examination.

These changes are beyond our control and have been put in place to fight drug resistance and to protect the environment.

Please bear with us while we put new systems in place to help minimise the effect these changes will have on you. 🩺🥼📑🐕‍🦺

If you have any question or concerns about the new guidance, RCVS can be contacted on: 020 7202 0789 or [email protected]

We use cookies to collect information on how you use our websites, to make them work as well as possible and improve our services.
