Coming to the end of the winter months, many horses have been stabled for longer periods and many start to display symptoms of gastric ulcers.

Does your horse show any of the below symptoms?

* Reduced performance and dullness.
* Poor appetite.
* Poor condition or weight loss.

* Behavioural changes - stressed, dislike of saddling or girthing, wind sucking or crib biting.

Hayden had a nice time telling the Eggesford pony club about the horses digestive system on Friday night. Hayden has a life sized model of the horses digestive tract which the children thoroughly enjoyed!

HRM Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022

To show our respects for the passing of our Queen, the Equus office will be closed on Monday 19th September. We will of course have a duty vet available to tend to any emergencies. The office will be back open as normal on Tuesday 20th September.

The Queen's passion for horses was truly inspirational and she influenced so many people throughout her 70 years of reign.

We send our heartfelt sympathy to the Royal Family.

Some of you may have already met our new vet Aeisha who joined the Equus team last month. Aeisha has moved to Devon from Somerset where she worked at a practice treating small animals and equines. Aeisha is a keen horse woman and has joined the Equus team to work purely with horses and donkeys.

Over the last few years we have used an off-licence product to help alleviate the symptoms of sweet itch. It consists of two injections two weeks apart before the midge season starts and has been successful.

We advise that this vaccine is given during the month of February for the best results. Bookings in advance are needed for this vaccination due to stock levels.

Yesterday, Hayden had the pleasure of meeting one of our new clients and their beautiful new arrival.

He had his IgG antibody levels tested in our in-house IgG machine which allows us to have a result available within a few hours.

Checking the IgG level of new foals is so important to help maintain a fit and healthy foal and to prevent Sepsis which can be a fatal condition.

Did you know - A horse drinks between 5-10 gallons of water a day?

Like people different horses crave different quantities of water a day and may vary depending on weather, diet etc but on an average a horse would drink between 5-10 gallons of water per day.

It is important to make sure your horses have access to plenty of clean water especially whilst the weather is so hot and humid.

A huge welcome to our new member of the Equus team!

Gemma is an experienced equine vet who has worked in the West Country for over 15 years. Gemma is extremely pleased to have joined the Equus Vets team and looks forward to meeting you and your horses. She enjoys working with all horses and ponies but has a particular interest in poor performance, lameness investigation and rehabilitation including using acupuncture.
Outside of work Gemma has a young family with 2 active boys and a triathlete husband who is also a vet. She also rides and competes her own horses Shelli and Elita, currently throughly enjoying BD team Quest with Holsworthy Riding club, for whom she organises regularly events and training.

Yesterday, Hayden enjoyed the sunshine and stood as senior vet at the South Tetcott point to point. It was lovely to see so many of our clients doing so well with their horses.

This was Equus’ last point to point of this season and we look forward to next year!

Who's ready for a bank holiday weekend with some 🌞🌞🌞🐴!

Just to remind everyone that there will be some changes to our office opening hours over the bank holiday weekend.

Saturday 29th May - Closed
Sunday 30th May - Closed
Monday 31st May - Closed
Tuesday 1st June - Open from 8.30- 5.30

Of course, our duty vet will be available for any emergencies over the weekend. To reach the duty vet please call the Equus line on 01837214004 and press option 2. You will then be directed to our out of hours service who will put you in contact with the duty vet.

Hayden will also be standing as senior vet at the South Tetcott point to point on Monday at Upcott Cross. Now that spectators can attend he may see some of you there! Best of luck to all of our clients who will be running their horses there. 🏇
