ENRICHMENT & SCATTER FEEDING
ENRICHMENT & SCATTER FEEDING
Enrichment is just as important as physical exercise for our dogs and scatter feeding is great way to add this into their daily lives.
Benefits of scatter feeding:
πΆ Calming & relaxing - sniffing lowers the heart rate
πΆ Engages the brain to provide mental stimulation and helps to tire them out
πΆ Allows them to practice natural behaviours
πΆ A low arousal activity - great for relaxing high energy or stressed dogs
πΆ Slows down eating
πΆ Confidence building
There are many ways to incorporate scatter feeding into your dogs daily routine, the easiest being scattering their regular meals - this can be done inside or outside!
I like to scatter small handfuls of treats/food throughout my walks (which Lottie, Louie & Bruno are all demonstrating perfectly in the videos below π₯°)
Of course you donβt just have to use their normal meals and treats - anything safe for our dogs to eat can be used as long as it can be broken up into small pieces for more effective scattering.
Also how relaxing are these videos π₯°πΆπΎ
Using that nose to find the treats! πΆπΎ
Dottie really enjoys her days when she joins me at the farm, her and Henry are really starting to feel comfortable around each other and Dottie even had a little groom from him today. It so sweet to watch them just being around each other π₯°πΆπ΄
We tried Herbie off the lead today! He was such a good boy π€©
Herbies spaniel nose working hard this morning! We like to encourage lots of sniffing on our walks especially with the higher energy breeds. Itβs a hugely beneficial activity for them to do as well as being easy for owners/handlers to incorporate into walks.
Not only is sniffing mentally stimulating but it also lowers the heart rate which in turn helps to create a calmer and more relaxed dog. πΆπΎ
