I am fully insured and have public liability. I went to St Nicholas Church of England School in Chislehurst and then Stratford House School in Bickley, Kent. My first job was at the Bank of England for 4 years and then Barclays de Zoete Webb for a couple of years. Then I decided to do a teaching degree at 21 years of age at Brighton University. I taught at Wickham Common Primary School and Babingt

on House. I did a Diplomia in Dyslexia and taught at a few schools including Leesons Primary School helping Dyslexic children. I decided to have a change and become a dog walker with my black Labrador called Jess and also a dog trainer. I did various online courses:
Level 1 course on canine care and behaviour, Absolute Dogs: Pro Dog Trainer and Geek Course, Holly Tett's courses and conferences,
Susan Garratt’s Handling 360 and Recallers, Animal Behaviour Level 3 - NIOQ training certificate, Diploma in Canine Behavioural Training - 5 day residential course with Robert Alleyne - PRAMA Training. I volunteer every week at Foal Farm Rescue Centre near Biggin Hill with the dog walking.

Lovely paws on. Great way to get your dog used to putting their paws on different surfaces and other objects like tree trunks. A great confidence builder.

It’s great to get your kids or other family relatives involved with training. The kids and dogs get a lot out of it. You don’t want kids scared of dogs.

I am on holiday again next week and back the week after.

Very good sit and waits. It was more difficult as a dog and owner went past as we were practicing. They were a few metres away so the dogs managed to wait. It’s great to practice things with distractions once they are good at something without distractions. Gradually get the distractions closer and see if they can still do it.

She came straight, pretty quickly in the direct route. I layered the rewards. Praise and touch first. Then several pieces of Bella’s high value food, one at a time to make them last longer. Finally a play with her favourite mop toy. Do practice recall on every walk several times. Have a party when they get to you!!! So they love that game.

Very good post about how to meet and greet other dogs. Do have a read.

A polite meet and greet...
(What is it, and how to train it)

When Rose was a puppy I purposely met up with a few friends (one at a time) with dogs I knew were well mannered and went for short walks with them, we began walking in parallel on lead and once Rose was settled we would let them off lead to mooch, during this time I would frequently recall Rose away reward her and then release her to mooch again. If she started getting over aroused I would step in so she wasn't becoming a pest to the other dog. We would then pop the lead on both dogs and practice simply sitting Rose alongside or opposite the dog and reward her for calm behaviour or for focusing on me.

If I was out with Rose and there was dogs I didn't know around then I would shout over to the owner that she was a puppy in training and deliberately start doing some obedience with her (sit stays, loose lead walking, follow me) and make it very obvious we were very busy, 90% of people respected this and kept their dogs close whilst passing.

Of course, there was the odd time when we were bombed by dogs out of control, where the owners couldn't recall their dogs. In a situation like this I find it useful and effective to very deliberately walk the other way, paying no interest in the other dog, most dogs stop following, or the owner will make an effort to catch up to get their dog. If its a really persistent dog and the owner isn't coming this is how I deal with the situation:

If the dog gets right up to us and is clearly going to pester my dog I will block it with my body, and speak to it in a stern voice whilst shooing it away, this is quite effective with over friendly dogs, plus I'm helping the owner by educating the dog that not everyone appreciates it running over and jumping up them or over their dog. If I'm concerned it's getting too much, and my dog is getting stressed, depending on what I believe the dogs temperament seems like I may hold it by the collar and take it back to the owner, or use a pet corrector spray to warn it off if I am genuinely concerned for my dogs safety.
If you don't have a pet corrector spray on you making a sudden loud noise, or a pop up umbrella can be effective.

If I met another sensible looking dog (on or off lead) and the owner seems to have control I would ask if it was friendly, and if so I would ask if Rose could say a brief and polite hello (that description usually helps the other owner understand you aren't looking for a dog for your dog to run riot with)

I never let my puppies meet dogs that are lunging on the lead, pulling to get to her, or barking. That's usually an indication that the meet won't be polite or controlled.

For me, a polite meet and greet is both dogs relaxed, neither straining on the lead to meet the other dog, maybe even a pause and a sit before meeting which is rewarded before allowing them to approach and have a sniff.
I watch both dogs body language during the interaction and if either dog looks uncomfortable or is beginning to get way too over excited or over aroused it's time to move on. I then call Rose away and reward her.

We hope you find this useful

Very good sit wait from Belle and Bella. Having been away last week it’s good to go over things they previously knew. Dog training is up and down and you do need to keep going over things. I made a mistake and said ‘yes’ before I had got back to the dogs. As I did want them to wait for me to come back. Or you can stay away and recall your dog to you.

I am away next week, I am back the week after. 😊

DO BE YOUR DOG’S ADVOCATE.
A lurcher came running up to Bella and wanted to play. I wasn’t sure if Bella was keen. She had a stiff body and straight tail and was staring at the dog. I asked the owner to call their dog away. He said that they wanted to play. I said Bella didn’t want to play and to please call the dog away. And he did. Dogs you don’t know it’s best to do a quick hello and then move on.

Really useful things to teach your dog. To sit and get them to wait or stay. It does not matter which word you use. Bella does get ‘break’ my release word and ‘wait’ muddled up sometimes. So do think about the words you use. You want to do as clear as possible. You can change a word by saying the old word first and the new word second. Gradually the dog gets used to the new word.

Belle and Bella do a lot of sniffing on their walks. This is really good to help reduce the stress hormone cortisol. You can play a sniffy game at home by hiding food or treats in your house or garden.

Other things that help stress is licking, chewing and shredding activities. It’s good to give an adult dog a couple of these activities a day. Give a chew, bone, lick mat, kong, filled horse’s hoof or cow hoof, snuffle mat, a toy they can shred, some cardboard boxes with treats hidden inside. A younger dog will need 3 or 4 of these activities a day.

Don’t forget dogs need sleep as well. 12 - 14 hours for an adult dog in 24 hours. Sometimes they need help to sleep in the day. By putting them in a puppy pen, covered crate or a room where nothing is happening. So they may as well sleep as there is nothing else to do.

Lovely having Bella back today. We have missed you!! 😊❤️🐾

It was great that Bella remembered recall and sit, down and stand. And excellent ‘leaves’ today. Turning round and looking at me, after I said leave. So turning away from the person or dog I asked Bella to leave. She received some lovely high value food rewards for this!! 👏👏👏

Do you have a marker word? This is a word that is said straight after the dog has done something you liked. Like a sit or 10 steps walking next to you. I use the word ‘yes’. A short word is good. It helps the dog to know they have done the right thing and their reward of food or a toy is coming very soon. So keep this word for when you want to give food/reward. Use another word when you go don’t plan to do this. So you are consistent.

Farnborough fields has an amazing Poppy field. See in this video. Bella did some very good sits, downs and stand near the field.

Dogs don’t feel guilt. It’s too a complex emotion for them. They might look guilty but it’s probably fear, because their owner is looking cross.

25/06/2024

They also did 10 great ‘leave’s’! Mostly for joggers who were doing a early run. A couple for owners and their dogs that I didn’t want Belle and Bella to meet. Dogs don’t have to meet all the dogs they meet. You can decide which ones.

24/06/2024

I asked them to do a sit and down in the stream. Bella did lots of sits, which surprised me as last year she wouldn’t sit in the stream! Belle who did lots of sits in the stream last year. Did not do one today. No downs today from either dog. It’s good to challenge your dog and get them to do things in lots of different places. Don’t worry if they don’t manage. Try again another day.
