Sue's dog training

Sue's dog training I offer training classes for all ages of dogs. 1-2-1's and home visits and group classes in Bromley/Orpington area. Which I really enjoy.

I am fully insured and have public liability. I went to St Nicholas Church of England School in Chislehurst and then Stratford House School in Bickley, Kent. My first job was at the Bank of England for 4 years and then Barclays de Zoete Webb for a couple of years. Then I decided to do a teaching degree at 21 years of age at Brighton University. I taught at Wickham Common Primary School and Babingt

on House. I did a Diplomia in Dyslexia and taught at a few schools including Leesons Primary School helping Dyslexic children. I decided to have a change and become a dog walker with my black Labrador called Jess and also a dog trainer. I did various online courses:
Level 1 course on canine care and behaviour, Absolute Dogs: Pro Dog Trainer and Geek Course, Holly Tett's courses and conferences,
Susan Garratt’s Handling 360 and Recallers, Animal Behaviour Level 3 - NIOQ training certificate, Diploma in Canine Behavioural Training - 5 day residential course with Robert Alleyne - PRAMA Training. I volunteer every week at Foal Farm Rescue Centre near Biggin Hill with the dog walking.

How good is your dog’s self control? Sit and stay try at home and in the garden first. Build up the duration. Then the distance. And today I added in distance and distractions. Of a person and dog walking past. Willow did really well, dogs often move if you go behind them. Willow stayed still! 👏👏👏

It took a bit of work for me to get Belle to come today. If you have asked for your dog to come to you, you must make sure you follow it through. By start going to them and see if you can get their attention. Don’t keep repeating their name. Instead use another noise: could be with your mouth like kissy noises or some other noise. Or use your hands to clap or pay your legs. Once you get eye contact, it’s easier to encourage them to you.

At the end of our walk this morning Belle practiced walking next to me to the car. I counted up to 10 and then said ‘yes’ and then rewarded with high value rewards. It is important to use rewards that your dog looovves when training.

My dog trainer friend Karen from Bugzy’s Dogs and Cathy from Horton Dogs did a live last week about dog training.
They talked about 6 tips:
1) Have fun and enjoy training your dog.
2) Find rewards your dogs loves.
3) Keep sessions short and sweet.
4) Build training in stages.
5) Add a cue word when you have established the behaviour.
6) Only ask if you think your dog will do it.

If new to lead walking start with 5 good steps next to you. With practice get up to 10 and then 15 steps. I find counting out loud can help the dog to keep their focus on you.

Practiced leave today. Asking Belle not to interact with a person. Not all people like dogs. The video was as the man was leaving. I had also said ‘leave’ in a normal voice as they approached and as they went past. Leave also means Belle gets a high value reward if she does leave!

Only Belle today! Sadly Bella hurt her back running for a ball last week. Suddenly her back legs didn’t work. We took her to Fitzpatrick’s who were amazing. They did an MRI scan and said she had hurt her spine. The treatment is rest and pain relief. Bella should be back in a few months times. 😊

How good is your dog’s impulse control? Can they sit/stay for 10 seconds or a minute. Build it up slowly at home. Then add some distance too. Then try in different environments for different distractions.

It’s great to make training fun by hiding behind a tree when Belle and Bella are not looking. They came so quickly and found me! 😊

Practice recall with short distances to start with. As they get better try longer distances. Practice in places with not many distractions first. We want our dogs to achieve. So we set up the recall so they have the best chance.

Recall takes a lot of practice. In fact you can’t practice enough. If you ask for a recall, do follow it through. Like in this video. Bella came and then walked away. So I made noises and walked towards her. Then gave her a reward. Always give a reward for recall. It could be praise, touch, good food or play with a toy. Or all of them. It depends what the dog really likes.
